Hi all,

I did a small video to show OS4.1 and Linux Debian running on my Sam440.

Play the AmigaVsLinux video on Youtube.

Download the AVI file from here (DivX, 98 MB)

Show it outside the community to advertise our operating system. Show it especially to your Linux friends

A nice apples-to-apples comparison. Linux was so slow on your Sam440!

Audio problems on Linux side maybe is caused by 64MB of video ram ?

Will do! I enjoyed this video very much. You certainly got the 'savoir faire' for video productions!
I was impressed this done on the 667mHz SAM.
Thanks!

Video is nice, but linux not must be slow like that .. or some bad configuration (many daemons, 3d party progs on loading stage, etc), or just very unpolished drivers/etc. But anyway, it's will be slower than aos4 if loading x-window,etc (just not like this , almost 3 minuts for loading, just unreal).

Well Linux is installed like this by default.
I just installed the XFCE window manager because I know it is faster than Gnome and KDE.

I think Linux is slow simply because it is running on a "very slow computer" (0.7GHz, no L2 cache). Of course the fact that OS4 flies on such hardware demonstrates how fast & efficient it is, and if it was ever ported to a "fast computer" it would be ridiculously fast (booting would probably be instant).

Can't agree at this point (about linux). Becouse i use 2 years day by day debian linux on my old a1200 with 060 cpu and AGA. It was very fast for booting (10-15 seconds), it was also very fast by usage. I also can run X-Window and Mozilla on it (you know, 060-aga , and i can run x-windowwith mozilla). And it of course was very slow, but .. if compared with video, it was somethink like that when i move the windowses. Loading was faster. Of course no video or somethink like that, but i want just point, that linux works very fast too, even on slow machines if it confegured propertly (and if, of course all drivers/daemons are polished for present machine).

All of this make me think, that debian for SAM slow like hell and very unpolished.

But with what i agree - aos faster anyway :)

Debian and OS4.1 are installed without any tweaks. They are installed out of the box. That's why I think the comparison is quite fair.
I even let compositing on while I could disable it.

Sure, but I bet you weren't running a FULL & MODERN Linux install. Anyone can have an ultra-cut-down Linux that boots fast on ancient hardware, but frankly all the ones I have seen suck.

It was 4-5 years ago :)
I sold out all my classic stuff 2-3 years ago, so .. can't make any vids about. Only what i have about, it's some of my "txt" files like "my 060/66mhz/debian - 133.12 bogomips" and other crap like this :) I remember also, that to works all of this over AGA, some poland coder make a 'framebuffer' for.

After i enjoy by it pretty well, i start to think about drivers for GFX cards (for me it was mediator/voodo3 on a1200). So, i oring Elbox, got these datshits, start to work.. and becouse of luck of help/motivation/interes i only do some init parts and nothink more.

Also i remember that Adam Kowalczyk make a 'so-so' working driver for mediator/voodoo3/a4000 for debian, but i never see how it works (and works at all).

As i remember solution for 'good' using of linux on classic amiga, was ppc accelerator with bvision (a1200) , and ppc/cvision for a400. I tryed some distros when i got ppc card/bvision, but with no luck. From other side, DjBase use it normal on a4000/ppc/cvision (i.e. with GFx drivers, etc). On amiga.org i DjBase's screenshoot with it before amiga.org updates -> can't found screenshoot now.
