68k CPU are very poor for making FF works fine. I think 68k port will never happenes. (You not wait from 68k play youtube vids at 50fps for example i think ? :) )
I'm on an Amithlon machine @3Ghz + Nvidia TI4200 + SBLive5.1. I can watch Xvid/QT/FLV movies on this one with no hassles... (I believe this machine is more than capable of running 68k Firefox...)
I also have a PPC Amiga1200 with OS4.0 Classic on it.
Note that both machines are not covered with this project.
@Alpyre Yep, winuae will enough for, but personally i am not in big interest to see it on 68k. Will be - good. Not - then not. Bounty say that it will be os4.1 and futher only. So .. Support of 68k users are important for make the "Bridge" between all the oses, that true. But for first need make any version of browser, then after all think about porting to other oses :)
I don?t see either microsoft (or their employes in their spare time) making firefox (3.5) for win 3.11 neither Apple (or their employes in their spare time) doing it for system 7
Don get me wrong i also want FF for 3.x but the code it?s here anybody can get it and make the port.Is the spare time of friedens brothers they can do with it what they want and you can donate or not, nobody forces you
Sorry that your machines are not covered by this bounty but Amigabounty is basically meant to support the newest incarnation of OS4. Currently that is 4.1 and when Timberwolf actually takes advantage to stuff not present in 4.0 it has to be that way.
I hope we see some attractive software and hardware which will make you upgrade soon
Hey guys... Don't be so harsh on me... I'm not against the project or the Frieden guys or donating the bounty...
I'm just sorry that we cannot have a decent browser on 3.x... A browser that will look like an Amiga program...
I respect the Frieden guys for their efforts... But as I've said in my first comment: I hope this project doesn't mean we will never see Firefox on 3.x. And I hope this one becomes a propulsive for the Amizilla project (and if they do release the sources I'm sure it will).
BTW, my favorite browser on the Amiga is IBrowse... A better IBrowse would make me much happier than a FireFox port.
@Troels: I am considering on saving some money for buying a Sam440 actually. Nevertheless I'll keep on using my other two machines.
I hope this project doesn't mean we will never see Firefox on 3.x.
It's easy to keep wishing that OS3.x gets more modern stuff, but at some point you have to stop trying to support ancient OSes that have been superseded:
Part of the reason why OS4.x exists is to add more modern features, some of which make it easier to develop more modern software for it. That doesn't mean it's impossible to develop modern software for OS3.x, but it is surely getting increasingly difficult with time, as the rest of the world moves forward.
As it is, OS3.x has been hacked to death over the years, in an effort to modernise it, but IMHO that is misguided now that we have OS4. It is simply dividing efforts that could otherwise be used to improve OS4.
Yeah, I'm glad that the Friedens decided to focus on OS 4.1, and use the best features available rather than reducing to the lowest common features that the various OSes have.
