Yeah, this sounds like the perfect successor to the AmigaOne at last. And for those who can afford it can have their power X1000's too. :) But this will be a great entry level machine, I love it.

The SAM460ex doesn't really seem as a low-end system, but merely as a mid-range system with more power.

It's looking very good, indeed.

well, the definiton of "entry level" has to increase every so often. It's good that our entry level will finally be 1GHz and PCI-e.

440ep vs. 460ex MHz for Mhz, you wont notice any difference apart from where the 64Kb cache comes into play.

Actually, the 460EX has 256k of L2 cache while the 440EP has none. This alone will make a considerable difference in performance at same clock speed. It also has a considerably faster DDR2 memory controller with 3.2GB/s peak datarate while the 440EP's DDR1 controller has 1.1GB/s peak datarate. Then there is the 4-lane PCI-Express slot which has a 4 times higher bandwidth compared to the 66MHz PCI bus on the 440. Together with the 60% higher clock speeds it'll be around 2-3 times faster than Sam440 while costing only slightly more than the Sam440 did when it was released, with the prices hopefully coming down eventually to the same level as current Sam440 prices.

I think the Sam460 could have a considerably bigger market than the Sam440, because the performance of the 440 and the fact that you could at best only use ancient PCI gfx cards in it put a lot of people off, but the 460's performance should be more than enough for the needs of the average user out there who is not planning to use the machine as a render farm or anything extreme like that and you can use the latest modern gfx cards with only driver availability limiting which cards can be used.

Looks like an ideal "low"-end Amiga. Not everyone will be able to afford the X1000 so this must be the closest thing to an X500 we get. Perhaps it's time to let go of the A1:)

I'm thinking the same thing, I'm just worried I won't able to afford any this summer, the Norwegian sate requires me to pay more tax this year, and I have car that needs to fixed and sold, so I can buy a newer car, this not a good year for investment for me.

Great specs to run OS4 on
If I can collect the money, I will bye this in september.
This board must be 3 times as powerful as the sam440 with L2 cache, 2gb DDR2 ram and PCIe.

2gb DDR2 ram

2gb is not faster then 1gb, and AmigaOS happly runs on 256mb, 512mb is requmended from personal experice (you will never run out).

But yes you are right in that Sam460 is faster:
Sam460 has 533 Mhz ram bus, Sam440 has 266 Mhz ram bus.

Getting the car fixed is some I most do because of some EU laws Norway is bound by, but it might cost me more then the car is worth.

Public transport is where expensive in Norway, and bus goes once in the hour during rush hours, out side rush hours it once every 2 or 3 hours, unless you live in the city. The train stops going after 24:00, I work shift.

I hope ACube one day affords to build a board that is more aimed towards Amiga users than to general embedded industry.

IMHO, this would be my optimal 460ex system (mid range):

SAM X460exM:
- AMCC 460ex SoC 1.066 Ghz
- 2 GB DDR2 Ram SODIMM 533 Mhz
- Silicon Motion (audio/video) or Natami audio/video or minimig audio/video or xcore generated audio/video or another free PCI
- PCI-express 4x lanes slot (16x mechanical connector)
- PCI-express 1x lane slot (for SATA board etc, inline with xorro)
- PCI slot, 32 bit, 66/33 Mhz, 3.3V
- 2e+4i USB2
- 2x 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports
- xena + xorro (instead of FPGA)
- integrated SD card reader
- RTC clock
- Serial port, 8-wires
- I2C and SPI/I2C buses
- Full system for 800? + tax

Low end:
SAM X460exL: (flex replacement)
- AMCC 460ex SoC 1.066 Ghz
- 1 GB DDR2 Ram SODIMM 533 Mhz
- PCI-express 4x lanes slot (16x mechanical connector)
- PCI-express 1x lane slot (or SATA ports with integrated splitter)
- PCI slot, 32 bit, 66/33 Mhz, 3.3V (one or two slots)
- 2e+4i USB2
- 2x 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports
- connector to 440localbus for optional xena board
- integrated SD card reader
- 350? with AOS4 (+tax) Full system for 500? + tax

Updated: division to LOW and MID

Update: GamerBoxLOW
SAM X460exGL:
- AMCC 460ex SoC 1.066 Ghz
- 1...2 GB DDR2 Ram SODIMM 533 Mhz
- PCI-express 4x lanes slot (16x mechanical connector) with 512M...1024M r700 series board
- SATA2 ports (using integrated SATA splitter)
- 4e USB2
- 2x 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports
- xena+xorro with super I/O card (4atari ports, etc...)
- integrated SD card reader
- retrogamepack+UAE+kickstarts+++
- Full system for 500? + tax
