The requester you saw tells you about the new SDK Database. The AutoInstall script checks for an SDK: assign, and if found, it will show this requester. Therefore only people with the SDK installed are informed of it's existance, as it's useless to users without the SDK.
The new database includes many third-party libraries that can be added to the SDK in order to make porting from other platforms easier.
As to whether you really need it, is a matter for you to decide.
I knew there was a reason when I set up my SAM to have 10g for my work partition... Had a quiet daydream of nice developing material filling up SDK to make compiling easier... yay!

Question: If I install the generic SDK, its on one of my backup DVDS from classicOS, will AmiUpDate update everything in the tree properly?

Yes, I can see it... guess I'm still too old School where I like to know where to put everything but only because I put it there...
That's what seperates Amiga Users from other Users, in general alot of us know what every file on our machine is for... how many ibm users for example do or ever did :D

Amiupdate sets up an AppPaths drawer in Env-Archive which stores a text file with the path of the application installed on your system. This is not for every app, but only those that use AmiUpdate.

i'm not at my aone currently but iirc if i do a check updates run all the libraries i have not yet installed in the sdk: are listed and also checkmarked. at a first glance it is hard to see that they are "new". i'd suggest to: - NOT checkmark them per default as usually i don't want to install *everything* - show them in a different style/color/icon/(whatever) to make clear that they are not installed yet
i also had the impression that one library was listed with a wrong name. i mean it was listed like "...sdl..." but it installed the "...sso..." or smth like that (don't remember now.
also i found that some packages installed the .so files somewhere in the sdk: folder. shouldn't they be installed to SOBJS: instead?
As I said above, queries against this database should be directed at its maintainer.

I agree - if AmiUpdate is picking up things that are not already installed, they should be unticked by default.
The fact that it says "Not found..." is not enough?
TBH I had reservations about this new database, and now I'm definitely starting to regret it.

why? the database is very nice and needed if you get a list of possible candidates you can install. thanks for doing it! but already installed software which has an update lying on the server should have precedence imho, shouldn't it?
