Frequent crashes (grim reapers) in SMA460 ex running OS 4.1.6

I need some help diagnosing and fixing OS 4.1.6 in my SAM460ex since I'm experiencing frequent crashes (grim reapers), even when the computer is idle.

OWB 1.23 (or the latest) version for OS4 is the app that crashes the computer the most; sometimes with grim reapers, but more often just freezing up.

In general crashes can occur at any time, and while using any app.

I bought this computer back in Nov. 2013, and I have not made any modifications to the hardware or software. The only issue I had so far, was right after I received the computer, related the Internet connectivity; the reason was that I was missing some files (drivers) that were deleted by the previous owner; I guess when he cleaned up the system before shipping it to me.

I'm not a consummated coder, so I would very much instructions on how to diagnose and fix. I love this system, so I hope I could get the most out of it.

Thanks in advance for any guidance and help.

How much network activity is there on your LAN? Does it GR when you don't have any apps open that use the network?

I find my Sam440ep crashes smbclient a lot when my LAN is under heavy load, even when the load isn't accessing the Sam itself.

I had the same problems with my sam. The problem was because there was a sil3115 pci card and my hard disks were out frequently with dsi errors and disk bloc errors. So, the sys was freezing always ! Grrr. When I put a sil 3114 in, all was oki, but I had to operate a hard format of each partitions (Workbench system and apps partition) after I saved all this on a DVD to copy all on fresh partitions.....

What you are talkin about ? Don't be omiga1200, read what ppls write. Relevant part:

How you will fix ppls hardware i do not know

Quote:

If only Ks1e shared his source code so some one might fix it.
And respected the GNU General Public License

:)) face and palm ! :) What i should share and with who? i can't get. I don't have any my code. If you mean odyssey : ask fab what you need to open or what to place on svn or whatever you may found in your needs. Explain him also about respecting of "GNU General Public License", probably then after that he will share with us piece of shit but no new sources, and liveforit and some others who cry about respectining of gnu/shmu , will be happy as there will be no new versions at all, and we will stuck with our "GNU Licence" right in our asses.

Is there any alien software in WBStartup ?
What are the Uboot settings for HD transfer speed.

You can view this information with Ranger which you can find on OS4Depot.

Can be a faulty memory module. Odyssey uses A LOT of memory, so a bad memory-related problem would show up more frequently than with other software.

If there was a problem in Odyssey code, surely other users would already have started to cry aloud?

Webkit is BSD licensed not GPL.

As for the parts of Odyssey that belonged to Fab they are released under the APL which merely requires Kas1e return his changes to Fab.

Maybe adding a fan would help.

As says Trixie, testing memory with memtester could reveal some problems.

With the "old" Reaction OWB, I found that the last version was also unstable for me, I downgraded to the previous one. But I haven't touched it since I started using MUI-OWB, now called Odyssey.

Normally, I would never suggest a complete reinstall as a problem solver under AmigaOS. But in this case, since you are using the system installed by the previous owner, and you don't really know the state of that installation (drivers missing, having been "cleaned up" etc.), you would probably be better off starting from a known new installation made by yourself. Make a full backup of everything on your machine first, so if you later find you are missing something you had in the current istallation, you can easily refer to the backup and either copy from there or just use the name to find a fresh, possibly newer copy on the internet and install (e.g. some app from OS4depot or similar).

You did get the OS4 disc and had the OS4 license transferred to you when you bought the machine, I hope?

Best regards,

Niels

Guys, thank you for the responses, but like I "tried" to say, the crashes not only occur with OWB. This is why I'm asking if there is anyway to run a general diagnostic the problem (read crashes)?

Thanks. I will check and replace. What type of battery does the SAM460ex use?

It uses a classic CR2032 and for my experience it doesn't keep the charge for a long time..... normally a new battery should give 3,2 / 3,3volt, below 3,0 / 2,9volt you should replace it with new one
