Not explicitly a Hardware post as such, but unless I'm going blind (which isn't outside the realms of possibilities) I didn't see an actual Introductions forum.
I find myself in here as I have bought Hans' old Sam460ex system, and being fairly new to AmigaOS4, I find myself currently trying to navigate the Radeon driver situation, while hunting the 2nd hand markets for a suitable card. I think I've roughly got my head around it lol.
Expecting the machine to be here early next week? Then the fun can begin

I guess the best place to start is at the home page of the manufacturer of Sam460EX at https://acube-systems.biz/ where there's also a Radeon QuickGuide that you should definitely read.

Hi, and welcome to the Amigans forum!

Congratulations on your Sam460ex! Hope you'll enjoy the computer when it arrives! Yours is truly special, since it belonged to Hans.

I second @328gts concerning the games competition. Hope you'll join us when the time comes!

AmigaOS 4 is a lot of fun, and there is a ton happening on the platform these days. If you are interested in checking out the latest news, here is the AmigaOS 4 Monthly Roundup for November 2025:

With all due respect... you bought it from Hans, who is *the* expert on graphics cards and drivers for OS4, like, literally the guy who wrote the book and pretty much the only one who knows for sure. So why not ask him??

Radeon RX550 and RX560 are good cards to pair with the Sam460, with both 3D accelerattion hardware video decoding. Manufacturer and model shouldn't matter but user with said combinations to advise you if you want to be sure.

The Radeon 6570 will be useful for installing the drivers from the Enhancer package before switching to a newer card.

Thanks all, for the welcomes and suggestions so far :)
@NinjaCyborg I did indeed ask Hans for his opinion as well, who also suggested RX550/560 as a good option, but still wasn't entirely sure who includes what programs with what packages. Which is fair, when you wrote the code you probably don't have much need to go buying it from somewhere :)
A gaming competition sounds like an excellent idea and is a lot of what I want to play around with on AmigaOS 4.1, so basically trying to work out what if any cards are functional enough with for games with what's included in the Enhancer Software without buying too many more extra packages, for now at least, Xmas isn't a great time for extra money laying around hah.
My only minor concern using an RX is research seems to indicate the UBoot firmware in the Sam460 boards doesn't support it, which is probably not important but maybe nice to look at for a new user. I guess it does fit the bill that RX550s are fairly easy to find and definitely don't require the RadeonHD v5 driver.
Of course going to have a look at used cards again after posting this, I'm instantly reminded of the other down point I had noted on RX cards, no analog output. Which is probably unimportant to most, but all my retro machines live on a VGA KVM (except the ones that are 15khz only obviously), so having an analog video connector is very useful :) I see HDMI-VGA adapters are pretty cheap though, and I assume they work OK but never actually used one

Hi, and welcome in OS4 land

If you install a RX card, you need at least Uboot version 2015.c but note that the last version is 2015.d. You can check which version you have like this:
- when Uboot starts, press the ESC key
- type at the Uboot prompt:
ver

You can purchase the update on ACube Systems shop here: https://shop.acube-systems.biz/24-roms-and-firmwares

@Elwood

I use a radeon RX560 Yeston 4GB GDDR5 Polaris 11.
Low profile and no extra power needed.

Cheers
