Why waiting for an OS4 magazine?

In the past, I heard a few people saying that it would be great to have an AmigaOS 4 magazine. It is true that our system is not covered much on the printed magazines these days, not even on guide magazines. The ones that spare a few pages to have content for AmigaOS 4 are the Amiga Future and the Boing, as much as I know.

But I would like to ask why should we wait of having a magazine that covers AmigaOS 4 more, and don't we use the tools we have right now available in our hands.

Anyone who would like to cover topics about Software/Hardware and write an article can do it in IntuitionBase (https://intuitionbase.com/), where we have already seen a few excellent examples from sailor. As I am the maintaner of that website, you just need to ask me for an account there, with the ability to write your content.

If you do not want to do it in IntuitionBase, there is the Articles section (https://www.amigans.net/modules/publisher/) here, in amigans.net. You can freely share your article here, which is available for everyone to use. You can even write something for the AmigaOS 3 here, as this is included in the website interests.

Both of the websites are AmigaOS 4 oriented and accessing them is free of charge for everyone. Both of them give credit to whom wrote the article, as your nickname is visible as the author. Writing your articles in any of them, you express your interests and passion for the OS we adore, and you help the website to get more traction (although 85% will be from AI bots). IntuitionBase has a more modern environment to upload images and write your text, but amigans.net articles section is equally easy to contribute to.

So, should we wait for the magazines to turn their head more to our systems, or it is already possible to share our passion with the community?

Printed magazine is something totally different: any articles in the internet can be lost and die even in webarchive, someone newer will know where they was and at all. Some just not in internet much still.

While real magazine which you hold in hands, it's something which feels "real", the thing you can put on table , and after 10 years again feel the color of the printed paper. Real magazine always was something more quality, where many pplz spend their time on proofreading, design, actuall planning, introductions, and all that. It just totally different things than just articles on sites.

Even diskmags of the past is more interesting than just articels, because of the engines / shells programmed specially for, while still not real thing.

I love how AmigaFuture done, wish we have just specific AmigaFuture for only Amigaos4. There a lot of everything happens which can feel easy 50 color 1 time per 3-4 or at least 6 months.

There's also WhatIFF? Amiga Guide Magazine that releases an edition every 3-4 months and anyone can contribute.

Amiga Addict would surely accept contributions on OS4 topics - if they had enough they could even do a OS4 corner monthly feature

Yes I agree printed form is ideal but it's nice to read AMIGA related articles on your AMIGA too
Also printed magazines cost money and that automatically excludes people from seeing content

When i talk year or two ago with one who doing AmigaAddict, i was told that yes, all accepted, all fine, but in end, i for test just buy few issues , and they was fully, totally old retro-retro os3 stuff. Even news, which is a lot happens in amigaos4, morphos and aros, wasn't mention at all, only and only os3. And that no problems, just it cleary show where interest of magazine are.

Even writing one single article to it about os4, when all others is about some Briliance app or SuperFrog which million times were covered everywhere, not of big interest.

The only real print magazine which at least have something about amigaos4 and morphos and which is active, is AmigaFuture, but those also lately shift to os3 mostly.

There was some nice Poland magazine covering only NG, called AmigaNG but i do not remember if it was printed or not (and in Poland anyway, so not that international)

Ah well the question to ask is:
- are they interested mostly in servicing their retail audience?
- or are they willing to take any Amiga-ish related content?
- does the content reflect the contributions offered? would they expand the content coverage if they had wider variety of contributions?

Recent issue had an article on internet apps on Amiga, but it was very poor, could have been written in 2005 and wouldn't have been any different. So their standard is very low and if I were them at least I'd welcome better quality contributions.

People have a wonderful quality that they may prefer something, rather irrationally, over something else that is way more practical, accessible, or cheaper. Take our PPC Amigas, for example: they are awkwardly under-featured, hard to get, and obscenely expensive, yet we stick to them despite having loads of alternatives. They give us some experience or feelings we wouldn't trade off.

Printed magazines are similar in a way. Almost anything they contain could be published on the web more quickly, more cheaply, and made instantly available to a much larger audience. Yet there is still something about picking up an actual magazine, leafing through its pages, looking at the layout and illustrations as they were meant to appear, and perhaps putting it on a shelf afterwards. It turns reading into a small physical ritual rather than just another piece of content passing through a screen. The web is unquestionably more practical, but practicality isn't always what makes something enjoyable.

So I guess when people are asking for a print magazine, they're pursuing the kind of enjoyment we've always had with mags. It's not that they don't know you can read stuff elsewhere.

Just got this email. Sounds like a perfect time to submit to AmigaAddict

Simulant Magazines

Your story could (and perhaps should!) be in our next issue
Hi readers,

First of all, a huge thank you to everyone who continues to support Amiga Addict, Pixel Addict, and our brand-new SteamOS Gamer magazine.

SteamOS Gamer Amiga Addict Pixel Addict Atari Addict Amstrad Addict
These magazines genuinely wouldn't exist without you. Every issue is made possible by a community of passionate readers, creators, enthusiasts and writers, and we're incredibly grateful to everyone who buys an issue, shares the magazines, tells a friend about them, or simply keeps coming back for the next one.

But there's something else we'd really love to see more of: you getting involved in the magazines themselves.

Fancy seeing your name in print?
If you've ever thought about giving writing a go, why not give it a try? You don't need to be a professional writer, and you don't need years of experience. If you have a story to tell, a game you love, an interesting project, a bit of retro history to share, or simply something you think other readers would enjoy, we'd love to hear from you.

Some of our favourite articles have come from people who are simply passionate about their hobby and wanted to share that enthusiasm with other readers. That's exactly what our magazines are about.

And of course, there's something rather satisfying about picking up a physical magazine and seeing your own name on the page!

We're always interested in hearing from new writers, as well as those of you who have contributed before. So if you've been thinking "I'd love to write something for the magazine, but I'm not sure where to start", this is your invitation to give it a go.

You can find out more about contributing, including what we're looking for and how to get in touch, on our Write For Us page:

https://www.simulant.media/contribute-simulant-magazines

We'd genuinely love to hear from you. The more our readers get involved, the more varied, interesting and personal we can make the magazines. Who knows, your next article could be in the next issue!

Thanks again for supporting the magazines, and for being such a brilliant community.

BOING is already a magazine which is dedicated also to AmigaOS 4 in a higher range:

https://www.boing-attitude.com/en/boing/boing.html

But maybe I'll take the idea about the AmigaGuide magazine with me as something to think about. Maybe we can put something together from our articles there...

I totally understand the quality of having a magazine in your hands. I have contributed many times to magazines with articles, and I support most of them buying them in physical or electronic. Not only that, but I was even making a magazine for the Greek Amiga Community a few years ago, where at some point ended up being the only person writing articles.

With the postage cost for magazines, I believe some people, myself included, prefer to buy the electronic version, unless if that is not available. But that's an assumption, and I do not have evidence to support it. I bet less and less fellow amigans from US buy magazines from Europe. What is your opinion on that?

Also, as some of you said, the articles in a magazine do not reach everyone. On the other hand, the article on a website does reach everyone, for as long the site is online.

And also on time. I mean, you have seen I guess that anything shared in magazines it is written two-four months ago. So, if you are keen to learn what happened at some event somewhere, a blog post and a YouTube video will provide you the information. When a magazine you buy will have an article for that event, you are probably have that already forgotten.

But the discussion here is not about "Internet vs Publication". As we do not have a dedicated AmigaOS 4 magazine, and there is no one willing to make one, we need to discuss what we have available, so to share articles about our beloved systems. Some of you already mentioned that if we send articles to those magazines, will be published. That's an option, and I can't encourage you enough to do so.

The second option I already mentioned is contributing to the dedicated websites, amigans.net and intuitionbase.com. Free, fast and easy for everyone.

They used to but there was not much in it and it even got less and less. Then they changed it from AmigaNG to Amiga Discovery in some sort of warped celebration of the ruination of Star Trek.

Just about the entire magazine was retro and OS3 stuff, it seems they did not want to move on. It started off OK but just got less and less interesting.

That's why I never bothered to renew my sub after the first 12 months. There just wasn't any 'future' in it.

I must get around to resubscribing to Amiga Future one of these days.

Great topic!

Were there an actual paper Amiga OS4 magazine, I'd certainly
subscribe!

It sounds like most of us agree on the appeal of tangible media,
but I'm sure we all know the costs and challenges.

I used to subscribe to Amiga Future, but it had less and less
OS4 coverage with every issue. AmigaOldskooler did a waaaaaay
better jouranlism job in this forum. When the subscription
lapsed, I really didn't miss it.

Posting articles here and to IntuitionBase, let alone OS4coding
(and probably other sites) are also interesting, but I have a
feeling a single central place is needed to attain "critical
mass".

Thoughts?

Thanks,

PJS
