OS4.1 native find-tool
Just popping in
Just popping in

Hi,

Everytime, when I open native Find application, it offers to search that path, where it is opened and all mounted disks.

Is is possible to set search only, where it is opened ? Bit frustrating allways exludwe all and click upper most.

Or better alternative apps ?

Thanks :)

I have the same issue as well, a bit annoying, I agree.

Tool itself is great, simple, clear and fast.

But no tooltypes, nor any other settings, as far as I can find.

If you use the command line you can use SEARCH. Or is there a problem with that?

Hi guys,

I wasn't able to find any docs on the AmigaOS Find program either,
but I think I have a solution for your goal to deselect all your
drives by default.

If you go into your SYS:System/ dir and run the Find program, you
can deselect all your drives and then use the "Save Settings" menu
item.

That will save the deselection of all the drives to the Find icon's
tooltypes. From there, anytime you call Find from within the
Workbench, the Find program will be run and you will only see the
current path selected and the rest of your volumes will be deselected.

FYI, when you save your Find settings, it will also save any paths
you add to the tooltypes. With a little AmigaOS fiddling that also
makes it easy to set up preconfigured searches of paths of interest.

In my case I wanted to have a pre-configured Find set up for
searching my Audio collection. So I made an alias of Find program
(named "FindAudio") with its own FindAudio.info file with the search
set up the way I wanted. Then I dragged my "FindAudio" into AmiDock
to give me quick, easy access to that search.

Hope that works for you!

Thanks,

I like to do the toggle selection, which is not in the menus, but you can do it by pressing the space bar. For example, the first of the paths is the one where you want to search in, unselect that and then press the space bar, which will toggle the selected paths.

Interesting, walkero's spacebar trick seems to be working as described here... Great trick.

FWIW, I'm running Find v53.15. Any chance it's a version specific thing?

Maybe you need to be sure not to have MattyOS polluting your SYS:? ;D

There is some documentation on the OS4 Documentation Wiki, though it's minimal and not entirely accurate. It does list the tooltypes (though some that it says are unused clearly are in fact used) and the command line options.

Thanks for the tip on saving the settings-- it wasn't clear what settings would be saved, so I never even tried that. It works great, removing the most annoying thing about using Find.

Note that saving the settings also saves the current location and size of Find's window, instead of the default of always centering the window on the screen and setting the size automatically. If you want to restore the default behavior, just set the MAIN_LEFT and MAIN_TOP tooltypes to CENTER, and the MAIN_WIDTH and MAIN_HEIGHT tooltypes to AUTO (or just delete those four tooltypes).

In normal or OS4 beta-verison ? Toggling should stay there, probably.

Probably guide is some steps old?

There is some general mishappening in tooltypes.

If I remove first uncheck line from tooltypes, wichs happens to be boota, where amigaboot.of resides, it markas all devices. boota is hidden partition from gui-prefs.

If I remove third line tooltype uncheck RAM, it leaves boota, Data partitions, it leaves boota and Data unchecked, but check RAM, Storage, Data, Work, Workbench. Checking everything after removed line.

CHECK_DEVICE tooltype not avail, so some inconsistency in tooltypes.

Great little tool anyway.

Click out of the Pattern string container first!

Possible, of course, but I doubt it. I have 53.16, both in beta and in public. That's the version that came with Update2.

Heh, no, that's not going to happen here . I only install a very few necessary modules (like graphics drivers, and whatever program I am testing my translation for once in a while) and never anything that replaces any OS parts.

Yes, of course - otherwise it just inserts a space in that gadget.

When I test it, I open a window on WB, then use WB's Window->Find menu item. The Find window comes up with that path at the top, followed by all my partitions underneath. All entries are checked. I then uncheck the top path and then hit the space bar, expecting the selection to toggle so my path is checked and all the partitions underneath are unchecked. Instead, only the checkmark on that path (which is now marked/selected in the listbrowser) changes - off/on with each hit of the space bar. All the others remain checked. And I can't get rid of the selection any more, only move it to another line which then behaves the same (toggles that line's checkmark when hitting the space bar).

But I tried - before having touched any lines in the lister - clicking next to the string gadgets as you described, i.e. remove the focus from the pattern gadget. If I then use the space bar, it toggles ALL the checkmarks. But that can also be acheived with the Select all/Clear selection menu items or their hotkeys.

I was hoping to have found a quick way of ending up with only the top line checked.

Best regards,

Niels

I've seen it work both ways, as walkero described, and as you described. A bit of experimentation worked out what is going on.

The way it seems to work is that if you click on one of the buttons next to a volume name, then that name becomes selected (it's highlighted). At that point, the space bar toggles just that selected name, and does not affect any of the other names.

The up and down arrow keys change which name is selected, and the space bar toggles that name. Pressing the down arrow key when no names are selected selects the top name in the list (and pressing escape deselects the Pattern gadget, allowing the space bar to work on the list of names instead of entering a space). Basic keyboard control.

However, if you click on the name itself and not on the button, then the name is not selected (no highlight), and the space bar then toggles all of the names.

So I guess the simplest way to do what you want is to click the top name (not button) in the list to turn it off while leaving all the names unselected, and then press space to toggle all the names. Or just save the settings as pjs suggested.
