I've updated the SMBFS from 1.73 to the latest version from sourceforge.net on both my ?A1-C and my SAM440ep. Using this new version I can copy files that are 100s of MB from Amiga to PC very quickly. With older versions copying even just a few MB would take several minutes. I'm currently copying a file of about 1.5 GB which with the older version would before have taken several hours to copy but now takes only some minutes.
Just in case I was unclear. I haven't done any programming on SMBFS. I just downloaded the update from sourceforge and figured that since it was such a big improvement people would want to know.
IIRC Olaf Barthel is the author of SMBFS so that's probably who you should be thanking.

Differences I noticed from your command: 1. You have a colon after the "volume_name". I doubt this is needed? 2. You have Device=SMB0: . I guess this isn't needed? 3. You have translate=L:FileSystem_Trans/INTL.crossdos . Surely this isn't required? 4. For SERVICE you seem to be directly accessing the User's folders, rather than using a pre-specified share. Well, i want to access the whole drive (for example "C$"), not some little user folder.
I would be most grateful if you could try making the changes (one by one with a test after each) to see whether any of them is essential for it to work. For the fourth point, try using SERVICE=//computer_name/C$ although that may not work due to admin priviledges, so it might be better if you created a new share for your C drive...
I made more tests. (Now I'm learning more. Last time I wanted to make it to work one way or another.)

Now I found it. Folders properties+sharing tab (W7) there was that full path to my shared folder I was using. But clicking Sharing "extra settings" button (I'm using Finnish version so I'm not sure of accurate English naming), there you can set a name of the share. After doing so now I can access my W7 with SERVICE=//computer_name/share_name (like with Ubuntu).
(Using a full path instead of a share name made that connection to a different directory anyway. (W7))
So far I haven't found a way how to use a guest account.

Thanks for the script I now have samba connection to my XP computer working a treat from my sam440ep, before I only had working connections to my sam440ep using samba.
The network setup on my sam now feels so much more complete.

Thanks for reminding me that this excellent package has been fixed, as I remembered reading about someone else having the problems that have now been fixed and missed the news at the time that the bug fixed release had been made.
Fast direct connections to my network shared files using my sam440ep is very useful and was the probably the biggest thing missing from my network setup before today.

@TSK Bah, I still can't get it to work with Vista. SMBFS just times-out after a while, saying could not connect to server . Not sure how I can get more info to find out why it's failing.
