What DVDRW are you using in your SAM?

I am not completely happy with the speeds writing to DVD via FryingPan and I'm just wondering if there something I can do as in regards to getting a different brand of DVDRW and/or a different type of HD to write from.

I have a brand new 160g Western Digital that hosts workbench and the download directory and a brand new 320g Seagate that hosts storage material and I usually burn from that HD

The DVDRW is a ASUS DRW-2014S1T a drive I know little about and one I wouldn't have probably brought if there were anything else SATA available in the store.

here is the print out of the drives and settings, I noticed an extra setting on the 320g perhaps it's not good? I took someones advise about using GGGG to setenv etc...

when I use say makecd to burn a CD or whatnot it FLIES along... burning a full cd in 3 mins...

any ideas?

I know I haven't given you any ideas about how fast it burns a dvd but lets put it this way, the dead A1 could burn a dvd in under 10mins... this SAM to DVDRW is taking almost 30mins to do the same thing...

edit: just noticed the 320 is running JXFileSystem4 4.33 I was meaning to convert them all back to SFS, perhaps that has some bearing on the matter; just quickly checked, all partitions are 512 blocks and sporting 1024 buffers

the partitions on the 160 use SFS and they would be the same settings and I seem to remember having better speed from that HD when burning... not entirely sure though

I'm a little confused here because I thought SATA was a good step forward, perhaps it's just the same as IDE just a different plug? you'd think everything would be perfectly sorted these days

Probably obviuous but have you checked the DVD disks themselves to see at what speeds they can be burnt and also the speed settings in FryingPan?

Yes I have and no worries, always look at the obvious! It's a good starting point for the not so obvious? hmm

@jahc

at least we're shipmates

I've always used TDK16x DVD-Rs

Lets see if anything else turns up

Fastest disks I've got are 4x speed, so half an hour would be right.

Need to get some faster disks to test.

Yes, I usually use AmiDVD and Make CD, depending on my burning requirements, as I find Frying Pan too slow for my needs.

Cheers.

Just for clarity, how is everyone testing this?
Lots of files on the fly or burning an image to disk?

No idea if that makes a difference or not.

Yes but on the A1 and burning to that DVDRW Drive with Frying Pan it would burn a full DVD in 8 mins

Always used 16x TDK DVD-R

I am going to try and get the same brand of DVDRW for the SAM but SATA

If that doesn't work then I give up

Thanks for your supportive post

Yip! I certainly find 'on the fly' is certainly slower to alot slower than buring say 5x700meg files. If you created an image first I dear say that would be even quicker than the 5x700meg but then of course, you add the time it took to create the image and the 5 images would come out on top in the end, I would think, anyway

Has anyone spoken to FryingPan's author about it's (apparently) slow speed on the Sam440?

Slayer can't put his hand up

Slayer thinks Gebrochen should probably be the one for this since Gebrochen has a history of speed test considerations, via MakeCD and AmiDVD writing preferences
