It's surely a problem with USBCTRL

I have USB disabled (from all UBoot, Kickstart and S-S) and I got that grey screen problem at one night too. (Unfortunately I didn't catch any crashlogs.)

The system runs stable when you not use mouse or keyboard

I doubt it is a USB problem. More likely the frequent memory allocations/deallocations caused by USB (esp keyboard & mouse) happen to get in the way of the memory corruption, and thus trigger the problem.

I personally suspect it is a datatypes problem, but it could be anything, e.g. an intuition gadget.

I found that switching to the debug kernel (v.easy to do) solved it for me (touch wood).

Since replacing the kernel by the debug one (as suggested by Rogue earlier in this thread), I haven't experienced the empty grey screen problem, either.

How do i switch to the debug kernel? Altering the (for me) mysterious Kickstart layout or renaming the kernel files in sys:kickstart?

Open the file "SYS:Kickstart/Kicklayout" in a texteditor, replace "kernel" with "kernel.debug", save the file and reboot.

I forgot to say but I was using (and still am) a debug kernel when I got that empty screen.
