I haven't got any suggestions, but I do remember having slow transfers years ago. Actually, I think that the transfer rate for large files was okay, but there was a long delay between copying individual files. Really annoying when transferring a directory filled with many small files.
@K-L Are you using SMBFS? Is it the latest version? If yes to both, then I believe there is a known-issue where SMBFS is really slow (so you might be better-off with an older version of SMBFS).
Risks? None really, except it may fail to work at all, since new SMBFS was enhanced to (partially) work with new versions of Samba used since Windows Vista.
Basically try it & see. If it works, great, if not, then no loss.
Latest 1.102 version from OS4Depot is totally useless since it freezes after having copying 3 files.
You could give the developer (Olaf I think) an email, just to let him know the problem you get. He is aware of some problems, so hopefully he can find the time & motivation to work on it further...

That's probably because it's not using our SMBFS, but a completely different program (which I have a vague feeling the source is not available for, but could be wrong). Olaf is basically trying to bring our old SMBFS up to modern standards.
