deep settings for screenmodes, on AOS4.1.1
Quite a regular

Hello,

Settings on AOS4.1 are finally just screenmodes and frequency on the radeon monitor icons.

There are also p96 mode on SYS:prefs, who permit to set deeply screenmodes on AOS3.x but, as I have seen, there are no more P96settings files on DEVS: on AOS4.1.1.

- IS it possible to deeply set my screenmodes on AOS4.1.1, with maybe the help of P96mode ???

- If not possible, why P96mode is on SYS:prefs (on AOS4) ???

In fact I have some screenmodes not centered on my CRT monitor or some not vertically centered and I would like to use P96mode, to change deeply the screnmode settings for some mode (As I could do on AOS3.x) or maybe now with AOS4, it's not possible anymore and all must be done on the monitor setings only.

I have launched p96mode, attach the radeon and after ?????

Click on "New Item" and drop in the screenmodes box.

I don't know why but when I try edit or resize a new screenmode since some time it locks up.

Later check the options and edit as you like.Change to 8,16 or 32 bits and adjust your screenmode.

What relation has the Screenmode prefs with Picasso96 prefs?

The question is:

- how take on P96mode the actual settings I have allready on the radeon monitor icons ??? Just need to fine tuning after (or maybe It's not possible).

- AOS4 will really take the P96settings saved by using P96mode than the settings on the radeon monitor (after creating all the screenmode with p96mode) ????

With the radeon icons, just add manually screenmode with same refresh and thats all.

With the P96mode, It's possible to fine tuning and push the resolutions for owners of CRT monitors.

- In fact the question is if I copy my P96 settings from my A1200 (made by P96mode, this setting will work on AOS4.1.1 ?????

- And what happened if later I use a TFT (or move the SAM to another place with just TFT monitors) ???

That is not possible. You can only use the tooltypes OR p96mode.

To use your old p96settings file delete all MODE tooltypes and add the tooltype
SETTINGSFILE=sys:something/p96settings

And make sure to disable DDC support.

It will use the settings from your old monitor. I think OS4 boots with a save monitor setting when you hold down the right mouse button during boot. Or you could boot from the OS4 install cd and change the settings.

For P96 to work you need a "picasso96 settings" file in Devs: (not Devs:Monitor, just Devs:).
On 4.1.1 there is no default file so you should put one there yourself, since i needed some old fashioned (ie:old systems) screen modes I grabbed this one and put it in devs: http://aminet.net/package/driver/video/ID4-P96

After re-booting the P96 utility in prefs will automatically find all those screen modes (defined in that file), and those same screen modes are also added to your screen modes list in the "standard" ScreenMode utility.
Of course if you don't need the resolutions defined in that file you can either delete the ones you don't use or edit them in the Piacasso96 utility.

To delete, drag the string representing the mode you don't need (in the "resolutions" list) over the skull icon above.

In case you just want to change color depth or the frequency in Hz, you can do it right away on the right panel, in case you want to alter the resolution itself (say, you want to change a 320x256 res into a 1600x1050 res) you must drag the string you find under "modes" over the skull.
This way you will get access to the resolutions fields on the lower left (after you set the resolution drag a "new item" in the Modes, now empty, list to specify color depth and frequency among other things).

Finally if you want to create a new mode from scratch, you need to drag a "new item" in the resolutions list (drag the box with the up arrow in the upper left corner) set the resolution fileds, and then drag AGAIN another "new item" in the Modes list too, in order to set color depth and frequency.
Test, and if it works save and re-boot (this new mode will be automatically added to your available screen modes in the standard ScreenMode utility).

Note that some times, creating a similar resolutions otherwise (say, by writing a line in Devs:Monitor Radeon toolType) won't work as it will assume certain other values you cannot specify (such as Sync size) that might not be compatible with your monitor (while adding the res using Picasso96 will produce a working resolution/screenMode), this is of course assuming that your are trying to define a somewhat unusual screenmode (being it because of the resolution you specify or because of the particular frequency you are trying to set), if it is a very standard VGA screen(or multiple such as WXGA etc.) I would advise to use the standard screen modes definition method (in the Radeon monitor toolType or in the monitor tab of the standard screenMode utility, be careful with the "screen interrupts" bug there though).

- What is this..... screen interrupt bug ???? (the interrupt=YES on the radeon tooltype) ??

Thats for taking the time for the explanation. I know now more how live P96setting OR screenmode on readon monitor tooltype...

There are a tooltype in your monitor driver called INTERRUPT and it should be set to yes for faster 3D... However if you play arount with the screenmode program in sys:prefs/ and save the settings the tooltype will be renamed INTERRUPTS which makes that tooltype being ignored since it isn't valid. So in that case you need to manually change the tooltype back to INTERRUPT by deleting the "S".

Yes, it is possible ot use both p96mode settings ansd tooltypes based settings. I have the majority of my modes defined via tooltypes, and one addition "ultra hires" mode added with p96, it works fine.

The one thing to be aware of is that the p96mode ones will come first in the database, so any previous created by the tooltypes will get their id numbers changed, this will confuse some apps that have saved the mode with an id number. So once you created you specialist modes then go through any apps with own screens and adjust them back to their old screens requirements.

Yes, you are right. I was INTERRUPTS=YES on the radeon tooltype.

Thanks for pointing me this problem. Now need to remember the next time I will touch the screenmode.

In fact, I will test my P96settings, from my A1200 (Voodoo3/P96) to the SAM (radeon/P96), the next week end.

Yes I was referring to that "interrupts" problem, hope they fix it soon.

Has someone noticed that you can't rename the "monitor" in DEVS:Monitors.
All the screenmodes are then missing in "Screenmode prefs"
The only name allowed seems to be "Radeon 9250". I would like to name it after the name of my Monitor.
Is this problem just here, am I doing something wrong or is it supposed to be like this?
If it is, then shouldn't DEVS:Monitors be named DEVS:GraphicCards instead?

Trying to set up screenmodes using P96 is "very" user unfriendly.
