[SOLVED] Help needed for running FreeSpace 2
Quite a regular

See User information
Hi.

I decided to give FreeSpace 2 port by Andrea a try yesterday. Altough I have to say that the installation took all night (only the first cd-rom needed approx 2 hours to copy files).

Wow.... too slow....

Anyway, a while ago the installation finished, but when I tried to run FreeSpace 2 I got a DSI error and after choosing to kill the program, a recoverable alert.

Anyone succeed with running this game?

Thanks.

It was fine for me (latest aos, latest minigl, latest sdl, and if i remember right latest openal which comes in archive, but i can be wrong). I.e. all should be latest :)

Latest SDL too
Latest OpenAL (taken from the archive from FreeSpace 2 port site).

Maybe try it from different locations (ram / sfs / jfs). Also try to do in the shell: readelf -d freespace2

It will say you use it any sobjes or not . If it use some sobjest (at top of information from "readelf"), then try to replace it on new ones. Just for interest, you can post there only stack trace ? (i.e. when crash happens, press "generate stack trace" button, save it to file, and post here _ONLY_ that stack trace (wihotu any other , mostly unimportant info). That can say us where it crashes.

Btw, latest sdl from google.code/os4sdl page , or from os4depot ? Anyway, need to check by readelf use it sobjes or not for first.

Thanks I will do that tonight.

About SDL I really don't remember, probably from OS4Depot.

So need to check by readelf, use it sobjes or not, and if yes, then update them all. Latest SDL are here. But if game compiled statically (readelf will say for you something like "this binary to have any dinamic sections), without using of sobj, then problems will be not that easy imho.

Upon installation, there is also a SOBJS directory into FreeSpace 2 game. Where I have to put the new OpenAL.so then? In my SYS:SOBJS/ or there? Or it doesn't make any difference at all?

Game should imho use by default these ones which are inside of the game directory, and if there is nothing, then use ones into SOBJ: on system partition. So, you can for example just move all the sobj from game directory, to SOBJ: directory. Also if it have that directory, then SOBJes are used for sure => update SDL by new one for first (and if that will not helps, then other sobjes).

it;s an awesome game & works great here & I have the same setup as you?..as my post at AW.net must be some configuration/libs issue as kas1e noted

What do you mean "very strange"?

How long did the installation to finish? Because in mine was really a nightmare, it was too slow in my system.

Depends on the system probably. Do you have a SAM?

Do you still use real CD-DRIVE ? Anyway, very possible that you have disabled DMA or kind for cd-drive , and because of this everything are slow like hell (copy from i mean). I have the same problems back in times when i try to install first time aos4.1 on my peg2. That was slow like hell, because of wrong connecting or kind (the old story as on classic amigas :) ).

Maybe its not your problem, but anyway, use the ISO files + diskimage for mount them easy.

it depends from the Media (f.e. mastered CD instead of the original one). Regards the SDL keep in mind that you need to download the latest version from Google code home page:

http://code.google.com/p/os4sdl/downl ... -1.2.13-SVNr37-shared.lha

This should fix also the '/' key problem.

i'm really tired...

Okay, problem solved.

I had already the latest SDL, but an update to some shared objects was needed (ex. libvorbis, libvorbisfile etc).

Now, I can play it normally, and it's really quite fast. Great game.

Thanks for everybody's help, really appreciated.
