Oh dear! Is my A1 going up the spout? :-( NOT YET!

Hey guys,

As you may or may not know, I have a rather sexy looking AmigaOne XE.

It's not had a lot of use recently, but I decided to power up the other day and I think I've got a few issues.

Firstly, not so long ago, the machine decided to take ages to boot up - it boots the U-boot ok, loads kickstart and then takes ages to load the WB.

When I tried to defrag and use mediatoolbox, it crashed. So I figured a rebuild was in order but couldn't be arsed so left it since the machine still booted and allowed for use of OS4 nicely.

Now, the machine does not detect the keyboard or mouse - the machine boots as normal but U-boot complains about no keyboard - if I fiddle with the connection sometimes it works but I think there is something fundamentally wrong! The mouse does not work at all and the keyboard is never seen in OS4 now (i.e. it does not work.)

Its the same battery as always, can't recall any power spikes or anything, the fan sounds a bit crappy but always has done as it is original - I have not tried another kb as yet but wondered if anyone else had had this problem? Is is a tell tale sign of HW failure or something else?

Your comments, suggestions and thoughts are most welcome. Tonight I will try a different kb, but it seems weird that both mouse and kb are playing up, almost as if somethings either got fried or shorted out.

Thanks in advance,
Rude!

Yes, but does it still carry the same charge (3.05v) as always?
It's an inexpensive place to start troubleshooting.

Try battery first.
Are you using wireless keyboard and mouse ?
Could be that the PS2 wireless receiver is going faulty.
If your not wireless it could be a broken wire.

Your keyboard and mouse cables havent got trapped by a desk or something and got damaged, or a sudden horizontal jerk to the rear of the amiga might have damaged the ps2 ports if the cables had no slack in them.

Not you too

Sound like the Ethernet is taking too long.

You should not need to do that.

Sound like should quick format and reinstall OS4.

Are you using USB or PS2 ports?

Sound like plug on then MB has come lose; maybe you should get some one whit some skills to look at it for you.

Do you have the same problem, when you boot from install CD?

Yes right before my CPU stopped working.

Yes bad CPU fan and a broken PS/2 mouse / keyboard connector.

Hi @Rudei

1> As you may or may not know, I have a rather sexy looking AmigaOne XE.
Here's some pix of mine: http://www.flickr.com/photos/11367727@N07/
It was four years this last May 1st.

2> Firstly, not so long ago, the machine decided to take ages to boot up - it boots the U-boot ok,
loads kickstart and then takes ages to load the WB.

I noticed this after the July2007 Update. Did you review the Kernel KS.mods to see if all are
loading or just the ones you have hardware for? I forgot to do that... My machine crapped out
around the second week of August.

3> Now, the machine does not detect the keyboard or mouse...
Same here. It goes through drive lights OK. When my A1 booted up for the last time, all the lights
danced through the sequence of lights correctly, but ended up in the black screen. Ah, guess what
the ProView LCD monitor failed! I took back to Circuit City where I bought it two years ago and let
them bench check. It took ten minutes to come up with a weak unstable picture. I have warranty
on the monitor, so it's a factory remanufactured replacement.

4> Its the same battery as always...
I recenty bought a Radeon 7000 GFX card from AmigaKit. I wanted it wether or not my card was
bad or not. I wanted a backup system. Also, I got a battery holder. My battery holder was a bit too
wobbly to say it was a good connection. I'm getting ready to replace it now.

5> ...the fan sounds a bit crappy but always has done as it is original...
See my Flickers. I used a SunOn replacement and added the Zalman fan over that. Very quiet
system. The CoolerMaster allows fan speed control, temperature monitoring. 44 F degrees was
normal for the summer operations with air conditioner on in the room maintaining 80 F

6> I have not tried another kb as yet but wondered if anyone else had had this problem?
Is is a tell tale sign of HW failure or something else?...Is is a tell tale sign of HW failure or something
else?

The 90 F degree days probably stressed the machine here. I didn't notice any problems in previous
summers. Ah, but I'm four years old now. So, it's all about growing old and dying isn't it! =:o

I haven't got around to re-assembling the machine to test my monitor replacement, gfx card, and
new battery holder. Maybe this weekend I'll get around to do it. Can't say anything for sure yet, but
I let you know as soon as I can!

Hi all,

From message #5-

Slowly I have been getting my A1 act back together and discover my UBoot ROM
is dead! I bootup to a blicking cursor only.

My machine originally came from Compuquick in OHIO, but now Jehran Jesrhani's
website -- Compuquick-amigadirect.com is out-of-order. I tried email, but get
no reply. I don't know what to do

Can anyone tell me where I can purchase a new UBoot Rom chip?

Thanks

Maybe a 3-Cag just for that would be an idea ?

I have a few spare KB/mouse lying around... Maybe USB as well, but certainly also some PS2 to USB adapters...

Note: You will have to provide proof of A1 ownership and/or return old ROM. Please write 1st and explain your situation and ask what you should do to comply with his terms.

If the ROM is truly damaged you can also obtain a new one, again, according to current acceptable terms.

I miss something in the process in which you reached this decision.

Can you get someone else's u-boot chip to verify?
Or cpu module?

Afaik (please wait till someone more authorized in these matters confirms/contradicts this!!!), u-boot can be re-flashed after booting the other(working) u-boot chip into re-flash program, replacing the chip (very carefully) inside the running machine and then start the actual re-flashing process .

Hi #6

You ready for this:

My A1 was offline because the LCD monitor was kaput! I got the new monitor
replacement under warranty. While I waited for this to happen, I bought a
Radeon 7000 GFX for backup and a Battery Holder from AmigaKit and installed
that. When the monitor arrived and hooked-up, I bootedup to the UBoot prompt.
I couldn't do a normal boot; BUS#0 would timeout.Offline for 30 days and new
battery must of wiped the settings. My UBoot setting were saved on the USB
stick and couldn't get to them. So, Uboot has a "restore lost settings", so
I tried that and it wiped out everything. The system boots up now to a black
screen and flashing cursor. What does it mean? I don't know. Perhaps Andria
Velinatto might enlighten us on this?

Hi @ Jack

Probably Paul Zager and I have the only two A1s in the whole sad
State of Michigan! I'm sure he doesn't have the means to flash my rom.
It has to be done externally to a code burner.

Actually the problem is - what happened to UBoot? It was there and then
poof... gone!

Guess what? The second A1 in Michigan is down as of last night, too!

First, the keyboard was unresponsive. Than after rebooting from the case reset button, I could hear the heart-breaking sound of a drive head swinging back and forth in a hard drive andn finding nothing.

It still shows the other hard drive working, so I either have my main drive or a back up that's only about 2 weeks old on the other drive. (Can't remember which one I had set up as which anymore.)

But if there's a way we can hook up a burner to my machine (I don't have one) once it's fixed, I could run a ROM burn for you if someone give me some instructions.

I think it's "Restore Factory Default Settings" that you should try instead.

Late last night I got the Young Frankenthousand running again on the main drive. The other hard drive was toast.

But so far I haven't gotten another drive to work in it. I had a little 40 GB Barracuda sitting around, but it's not recognized by Media Toolbox. So the verdict is still out.

At least it's not dead right now.

Heh, heh. . . the battery was low again though! I had just changed it a couple months ago.

But all my problems with not being able to find the SLB are gone now.

Oh no, it's A1 plague! So far, it was a LCD monitor, keyboard, and battery holder. If I can get a re-flashed UBoot PLCC chip, I can bootup.

But if there's a way we can hook up a burner to my machine (I don't have one) once it's fixed, I could run a ROM burn for you if someone give me some instructions.

It's called an EEPROM Programmer IIRC. I don't how it's done on the A1.
