OS4 Mini Roundup for September 2026

This is a brief roundup of recent news relating to Amiga OS4. It is not as detailed or well constructed as the Roundups created by AmigaOldskooler which were exceptional contributions to the community. Hardware News
Work continues apace on the Mirari front, with boards expected to reach users before the end of the year.

The project marks a change in focus from the original concept of developing an open-source PPC based laptop, with the creation of a desktop motherboard seen as a more achievable first step. ACube are working as the hardware and software experts, with donations raised through the Community being used to create the first prototype of the board, which boasts an NXP T2080 processor. ACube have a long and successful track record of producing robust, well-supported hardware such as the Sam 440 and 460 boards. Along with their multiple software projects (see below), ACube’s involvement adds a significant degree of momentum and chance for long-term fruition.

Software News
New OS4 compatible kernel and more! Andrea Palmaté, (afxgroups, AmigaLabs) demonstrated his new OS4 replacement kernel at Pianeta Amiga. Using the open source AROS kernel as his starting point, Andrea has incorporated OS4 compatible features allowing his X5000 machine to boot fully into Workbench and run OS4 software and applications. His kernel includes SMP multi-core processing and extended memory support. Screenshots released via Discord show all four cores of the X5000 working, with 16GB of RAM being used. The kernel will include load-balancing and task scheduling across the cores available and will be released with an open source licence on all current-ish hardware (X5000, Sam460, A1222 and X1000). A compatibility layer for older 68k software will be provided, based on the Musashi 68k emulator, replicating the functionality of the Petunia layer currently in use on OS4.

It’s probably reasonably safe to assume that this kernel would also be developed to support the Mirari and Tyche boards, once they are fully available.
Could this new kernel become the foundation of the next version of OS4, moving away from ExecSG? Or will it give the ExecSG developers a kick up the backside and motivate them to crack on with their work and renew closer ties with Hyperion? Since its earliest days AmigaOS has been modular in nature, with third-party components being developed as drop-in replacements and often being distributed with the OS under licence. Having an alternative is what we’re all about, isn’t it…?

A modern browser on a multi-core OS4? Not content with creating a new kernel, Andrea Palmaté has also released images of his port of the PowerFox web browser. PowerFox is a Firefox fork for PowerPC based Macs and includes support for modern goodies like WebGL and Javascript. Also at the show in Italy, ACube Systems presented details of the some of the software that is being worked upon to further support their existing SAM460 boards and to prepare the way for the Tyche board. Software includes new drivers for Radeon graphics cards, NVMe storage devices, updates to Uboot and SATA 3112 storage drivers. Kas1e continues to refine his MESA implementation, releasing a second update to version 1.2. The release includes a number of fixes and performance improvements

Kas1e has also released a patch to enable GART on Sam460 machines with RadeonRX graphics cards. The patch works on the RAM-loaded driver, so does not interfere or overwrite the permanent disk version and may offer a speed-up to some software.

Kikems has released Lightwave RTG, an update/patch created via reverse engineering that updates the old Lightwave 5.0 with native RTG capabilities, making it fully compatible with AmigaOS4, MorphOS, and classic Amiga systems with RTG. Events and News News

The Finnish Amiga Users Group held their 15th SAKU event on 19 September in Oulu. Speakers included Mike Battilana of Amiga, who spoke mostly about fonts and logos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jUCni7hRXY


The Scottish Amiga User Group held a meeting on 19 September in a secret location. At least, their news items on AWorld and Amigans didn’t reveal their whereabouts. I’m going to have a guess at Glasgow, which is where they met back in March. I’m also guessing that the location was hidden to prevent Mike popping up with his slides about fonts and logos.


The Pianeta Amiga Show took place in Empoli, Italy on 26-27 September, with many of the above developments being announced there.

Mario Locati, one of the founding members of the Power Progress Community developing the Tyche board, has written an interesting blog post detailing his trip to the show.
