Best sound card for *recording* on a Sam?

Hi everybody,

while trying to hear my record over the jet-engine noise that is my PC (that I use for recording), I once again pondered the idea of using my normally unused Sam440ep.

Having wired up the front audio jumper to the headphone socket (as there's no line-in on the Sam itself and the case had no line-in, only mic which is mono), I managed to record a track (Dr. Hook, if anyone's interested).

It did seem to be very quiet though and there was a notable DC offset in the track when I looked at it in Audacity. I need something a bit better, I think, than the on-board Sam chipset.
I tried the Audigy2 Platinum that normally lives in my PC too but it didn't fit the case so that was no good.

What's the best sound card (bang/buck) I can get for recording under AmigaOS 4? Any suggestions please? Thanks!

I use a 'terratec phase 22' in my Sam-Flex. It's a good semi-pro card with "full size" jack inputs, as well as digital (I've never tested the digital in but I believe it is supported by the driver)

It uses the Envy24-HT driver.

It cost me about ?70.00 IIRC (or that might have been ?70 I bought from thomann.de ) I think prices have come doen since.

I ad a soundblaster live 5.1 in my 460. Probably not a good kard but gave sound atleast

But i bet you know that you need a 3.3v card(or combo)?

I used an M-Audio Evolution 5.1 when I had my Samflex@800 and it worked great under OS4.1u2

It doesn't look like Thomann has the Terratec available any more, I just checked their site. They do have the Rev 5.1, and that's also an okay card; I've got one in my A1 G4.

I've ordered an ESI Juli@ from them tonight which I intend to test in my Sam 460ex, and/or possibly in the X1000, once that arrives. It's a bit more expensive than e.g. the Rev 5.1, but supposedly also a really good card, and supported by the ENVY24HT driver.

We'll see.

Best regards,

Niels

If USB is supported, I would go for an USB soundcard.
Benefit is that you can use it everywhere, not only the SAM, and you might be willing to raise your budget in that case.

There are thousands of good soundcards out there.
If it needs to be on professional level, try the cakewalk UA25 EX.

Once again, USB sound cards are not supported by AmigaOS 4.1.

Not entirely true - I do have USB sound on my OS 4 machine....

.. but that's because it's using a Deneb and the 3.x drivers.

I need sound on my Sam440 though, so it has to be 3.3V PCI. Currently looking at M-Audio Audiophile cards like the 24/96 or the 192...
