Only allow png snapshots.

I love that some progams on os4 depot has screenshots, but users seems to be unable to create snapshots in jpeg format without horrible artifacts.

I dunno how they manage to make them so bad, or maybe if it's the site that converts them into shit.

the png format does not suffer from the artifacts problem so if it's only allowed to upload png snapshots we would not have to suffer from bad jpeg pictures anymore.

I think it is the site compressing the images, and I think it's a relatively recent change.

I've only uploaded 2 files to os4 depot, the first was some pointers about 10 years ago, and the jpeg looks fine. The second was an application that generates video thumbnails, and the screenshot and examples are heavily compressed with noticeable artifacts.

I just sub an update, so thanks for the tip about uploading PNG instead.

That seems likely that the site performs some extra compression on the jpeg files so that should be fixed :)

But still jpeg is not a suitable format most of the time.

I tend to always use PNG for that very reason, jpeg compression does often lead to artifacts. Its OK for photos but anything that should be clean and sharp like a screengrab is much better in PNG.


BTW. The comparison would heve been better if your screenshots used the same background colour. Black backgrounds never read that well anyway.

Webp makes for adequate quality even in extreme cases.

I think WebP has a lossless mode. SGrab doesn't support it though, and neither does OS4Depot.

JPEG is always lossy so isn't great for screenshots where there are sharp lines.

PNG is always lossless.
