Xash3d (HalfLife)
Just can't stay away
Just can't stay away

Hi everyone,

just a short update: my Half-Life / Xash3D-FWGS port for AmigaOS 4 (Warp3D Nova) is almost finished.

The port was cross-compiled using walkero’s cross-compiler Docker and afxgroup’s clib4, and tested on an AmigaOne X5000 with Radeon RX. The game is already playable end-to-end, the installer is in place, and I’m still working on the final polish. There is no public release yet — I want to finish the remaining issues first.

Quick facts:

Native AmigaOS 4 port of Xash3D-FWGS
Renderers: MiniGL, gl4es (via GLES2 / Warp3D Nova), and software renderer

Graphical installer included
Needs a legal Steam or GOG Half-Life install (valve folder)
This port has taken an enormous amount of time and work. If you’d like to support it, you’ll find the link in the video description.

Any support is greatly appreciated and helps me get the last bits done for a proper release. Feedback after watching the video is welcome too.

Thanks — and enjoy the video 🙂

Here’s a video of it running on real hardware:

Great work!

And I will be trying a 68k compile based on Maijestro's Source-Code for OS4 ^^

No promise yet, I just started looking into the code. Once seeing it - even more "Great work" towards Maijestro. That's really a bunch of stuff (especially the 3rdparty libs stuff ...).

Really nice work :)

Is HL2 possible to port also?

Cool !

Btw, i see in installer, you use some self-made progress-ascii-style bar. Are there reasons for not using prebuild default variant with progress bars ? Or you just want to make it to looks like that ?

My original plan was to add a nice native blue progress bar, but somehow it all fell apart. I’m also not happy with the centering yet. It still looks a bit messy. That’s why I ultimately went with the ASCII bar—because it worked.

Maybe you have a few tips for me?

I’m particularly focused on centering and the native progress bar functionality here. Once it’s finished, this Python Installer could also be used for future projects.

That looks amazing. Thank you for the port.
I am not aware of how this engine is working, but it would be beneficial if you checked if it supports any available mods out there, for a future package. Maybe HD textures or something could be added.

Thanks a lot, glad you like it!

Regarding mods and HD content: the engine can run many Half-Life mods in principle, but on AmigaOS4 each one needs its own native game libraries (client/server .so), so that’s not something I can just drop in as a package overnight. I’ll look into what makes sense later once the base port is fully settled.

HD content is partly already there — the Steam valve_hd folder is mounted and used. Extra wall texture packs (materials/) are possible too, but those packs are often very large, so I’d want to test carefully on real hardware before recommending anything.

Appreciate the feedback 🙂

Wow, I just tried it out and it's fantastic—it looks much better and doesn't seem to affect the gameplay at all; it's still smooth. That's really cool—thanks for the tip. I'm going to implement it now.

Hey folks — small update on the AmigaOS 4.1 Xash3D port.

There’s now a proper GLES2 path with shaders on Warp3D Nova. Getting that working meant the WAF shaders had to be rewritten for GLES2 — they didn’t run on this stack in their original form.

All four renderers are in good shape now:

gles2 (with shaders)
gl4es
MiniGL
software

That annoying lightning/beam bug was fixed as well. Looks correct again.

The port is probably entering its final phase now. Still a bit of polish left, but overall it’s in a much better place than it was a while ago

Don’t be surprised if it looks a bit dark — that’s intentional, to give it a bit more atmosphere. Of course you can always turn the brightness up (or down) to whatever you prefer.

btw wouldn't a simpl gui with such options be "nicer" easier, instead of several requesters??
I can help on such gui if you want.

Hey, thanks a lot — really appreciate it!

Yeah, a little GUI like that would be much nicer. Right now StartXash just pops up one requester after another (renderer, window/fullscreen, resolution, language). It works, but it’s a bit awkward.

That you’re offering to write a GUI for that is great — I’d honestly love that. I know you’re good at this kind of thing too. So if you’re still up for it, please do get in touch. We can figure out together what fits best on AmigaOS 4.1.

Thanks again for the kind feedback!

Exciting! Have you tried Opposing Force? I've got great experience on it with Xash3D-FWGS on macOS.

Hey,
we're unleashing Half-Life on the Amiga.

Fresh on OS4Depot. I tried to squeeze in as many of your requests as I could: GUI launcher, mods, Opposing Force, Blue Shift, renderer options, and all the rest around it.

Bugs got hunted down — hope it just works for you.

Thanks to everyone who dropped tips and ideas — you're partly to blame that this thing turned out this cool on AmigaOS 4.1.

Have fun trying it and playing. Please leave feedback, especially from older machines. I want to know where it squeaks.

Cheers

P.S. Engine and tools only — bring your own legal Half-Life data (Steam). Black Mesa won't wait forever.

Here I was, wondering when Half-Life made it to GOG. If it did, it's not there now.

You're right — there was only one request on the GOG Dreamlist page (https://www.gog.com/dreamlist/game/half-life) for that version to be made available on GOG. So what's needed is either the base game: Half-Life 1 in the standard PC version (Steam or the updated CD version v1.1.1.0).
