PowerPacker source code?
Just popping in

I was looking for a powerpacker decrunch program for Windows, but could not find any website that provided information abot the .pp file format.

It seems the well known Amiga packer knowledge is to be forgotten forever .. until..

I found some source files for PowerPacker :

ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/amiga/fish/501-600/ff561/

The PPlib.lha has some source code, but I do not know if it has enough information.

It would be great if Powepacker support was in most major archive/packer programs.

Long live PowerPacker !

Hi angelheart,

I think powerpacker is very, very, very cool.

I liked the GUI it had, it made packing easy to use. The command line made it VERY DIFFICULT for me to compress files, say LHA, for instance. Capital letters vs. lower case, vs. the minus sign, just could NOT get the hang of it, and add in nearly NO SAMPLE TEMPLATES!!!

PPMore is blazing lightning fast at 7.12 MHz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Truly, all things Amiga ARE the Queen and King of computing!

Support Amiga Fantasy cases!!!
How to program: 1. Start with lots and lots of 0's. 10. Add 1's, liberally.

Yes it was easy to use but it had an awfull pack ratio.

Pakers use a very simple method to squeeze files.

And becoarse its so simple its also ligthing fast.

It's not fast at all. There are lots of other algorithms with similar bad compression ratios, or even much better ones, which unpack several times faster than PowerPacker, for example LZO and UCL.

Such fast packers with bad compression ratio are next to useless now anyway, we don't use slow 7 MHz 68000 CPUs any more. IIRC LZMA decompression is about 20 MB/s on an AmigaOne, GZIP about 50 MB/s, i.e. using a GZIP based executable packer is faster than loading uncompressed executables. Only on the SAM440ep you need something faster to get faster loading speeds with compressed executables since the IDE controller isn't as slow as on an AmigaOne.

Sam440 has SATA, not IDE.

It doesn't matter if it's PATA or SATA, all controllers are very slow in an AmigaOne.
