![]() I can access the site now.
It seems not so much an update as someone mentioned earlier but a huge whopping great 85MB thing which with my crappy512k BT line (thanks BT for still charging me full line rental) will take all day to download. So before I decide to do so or not, what are the differences from the last SDK, I don't use shared objects so can do without that, but what else would I be missing ? |

![]() The binutils in the latest SDK fix the alignment issues on the 440EP processor. If you want your software to work correctly on the Sam, this is a VERY recommended update.

![]() Does that mean that all the software released for OS4/OS4.1 needs to be recompiled & rereleased to work on SAM?

What happened to the reply I sent earlier today? Oh well here goes again ! Is this any different to just using "-mstrict-align" in my makefile ? I do this already after having found alignment problems before and contacted Steven Solie about it. I think he saind that "-mstrict-align" would be set by default in the next release. So if that is all it is, I may not have to soend hours downloading a HUGE file unless it is absolutely necessary. Assuming it may be absolutely necessary could someone just upload an archive of just the binutils so folk with slow connections do not have to download the entire SDK again. |

do you have an internet cafe or gaming lounge you can go to, download the file at, pay $2-3 and burn it onto a dvdr? thats what I'd do if I was on dialup.. but I'm a big city, so .... may not be an option for rural areas? not sure.. |

Quote: Is this any different to just using "-mstrict-align" in my makefile ? The floating point alignment issue is still present in the compiler. This will change when the compiler (not just binutils) is updated in a future SDK. The alignment issue we are talking about in this update directly affects performance and correctness on the 440ep platforms only. As you know, the 440ep has much stricter alignment requirements than the other platforms. You must use the new binutils or your software will appear to function correctly most of the time. Quote: Assuming it may be absolutely necessary could someone just upload an archive of just the binutils so folk with slow connections do not have to download the entire SDK again. Absolutely not. Do not start picking apart the SDK because parts of it are dependent on other parts. Please find a way to obtain the entire SDK. |

![]() Many thanks for your continued hard work.
I'm no dev so have no idea what the aliginment issues are and how they affect the Sam. Can anyone give a brief description in laymans terms? Cheers |

I knew that the early version of SDK ( maybe only gcc ) crashed ( didn' t work properly ) if amicygnix was installed and to avoid this, the assign of amycygnix had to be commented.. is still so ? |

![]() > This will change when the compiler (not just binutils) is updated in a future SDK.
Oh great, I suppose that will be *another* 85MB download ![]() > Absolutely not. Do not start picking apart the SDK because parts of it are dependent on other parts. Please find a way to obtain the entire SDK. But in the earlier sentence you have just stated that ALL that has changed is the binutils section. So why cannot an UPDATE containing them be available. It makes no sense to have to download 8MB or more of repeated material that people already have. Is Amiga development now only possible by those who are lucky enough to have fast connections? It seems developers in rural areas are being discriminated against and will no longer be able to develop for OS4 ![]() I certainly cannot justify 85MB downloads here every time there is a small update. I may have to give up any further develpoment if getting the proper tools is made so difficult. The distribution method needs to be improved so that everyone, not just those with fast broadband can develop. No wonder there are so few Amiga developers around ![]() |

Perhaps a diff archive could be produced between each release. That way people could theoretically recreate the new archive by just downloading the diff file. Or perhaps amigakit or somesuch could be convinced to redistribute the sdk on CD for a modest fee.. |

That would certainly be the best way by far, especially when the SDK is so huge to start with. It is just crazy to have to download the entire thing for each update and extremely inefficient. |

Thanks for the offer. It may not be necessary to send the whole thing. If you have both your new SDK and your old one backed up you could run Compare Dirs (http://os4depot.net/share/utility/filetool/comparedirs.lha) and just email the files that are different. Goodness knows why the people that create the SDK cannot do this in the first place and just release an update with the new files is beyond comprehension. |

![]() I would be happier to send the whole thing to you since it doesnt matter if 2 megs or 200megs sits on the cd. It is in the post.
@ All ok... Cubic IDE has to be uninstalled or commented out in the user-startup and a reboot BEFORE using the update. |

Just to let you know that the SDK arrived yesterday, but as I worked a long day could not reply until now. I did take a USB pen to the library and download it there yesterday too. They do have fatsre access than me being in the town it would take around a half hour use on the computers. I am not sure if I got it all. It was still about (started off about 5x and then got slower and slower) 2 to 3 times faster than I could have managed here thanks to that monopolisitc BT we have to endure in the UK. The creators of the SDK really do need to consider this fact when releasing the SDK, if it is an update release it as an update option too as well as the full thing. Some of us just cannot download such large files. Thanks for your help. I'll get around to installing it sometime tomorrow. Bill. |
