Hardware News

Gideon Zweijtzer (of 1541-Ultimate fame) and Rutger Bevaart have teamed up to bring renewed innovation to the Classical Amiga by announcing the UltimatePPC today, the ultimate CPU expansion card for the Amiga 3000 & 4000. This new card will bring unparalleled performance and many great new features to the Amiga series of computers that were not available previously and give current users a viable upgrade path for aging components. It also opens new possibilities for newer versions of the Amiga Operating System or alternatives to run on your classic hardware with great performance. The UltimatePPC puts your Amiga right back on your desk as the most versatile and fun computer that has ever existed!

Right now the UltimatePPC is in active development, we expect to be able to take pre-orders at the end of 2012. Please visit our project website at http://ultimateppc.nl for availability information, specifications and detailed status reports.

Gideon & Rutger

Caveat: Amigans.net members are advised to remember the old Amiga community axiom: Its not real until it ships. So please bear that in mind.

As for me we have enough of all kind HW already, and with 1ghz, and with 1.8ghz, and all of them already there, new and works.

I really can't see a point. Through, i assume dreampipe smokers will be happy to wait another few years for something. Waiting is so cool :)

I think it has now been shown (on aw.net) that the proposed CPU is incompatible with standard PPC and hence no existing OS like AOS or MOS is ever going to run on it.

As one guy said, it's the same incompatibility that Coldfire has with 68K.

Me neither, as I have to wonder at what point it no-longer makes sense to attach a jet-engine to a bicycle (and no, I'm not saying a classic Amiga is a bicycle... except when it is compared to the power of a semi-modern system).

Although if someone wants (and is able) to buy it & use it, then more power to them. I wouldn't be here without ACube being crazy enough to design & sell the Sam440. If someone really can't face using an Amiga unless it still has a real Amiga chipset somewhere inside, then better to have them than to loose them.

Oh dear, so this is another Elbox Dragon/Shark (*), or (dare I say it) iWin?

P.S. Does anyone know who Gideon Zweijtzer & Rutger Bevaart are? (1) Do their backgrounds give any reason to believe in this project, and (2) Do we have any independant way to confirm that they are really involved?

(* = did the Dragon or Shark ever actually get released? I recall there being some kind of announcement for one, but AFAIR it never seemed to become available to buy.)

Sadly I am leaning more towards the "iWin" explanation. Their FAQ apparently contained this:
Quote:
Q: Will the PowerPC run AmigaOS4.x / MorphOS / etc. ?
A: We hope so! We will work actively with Haage & Partner and any other developer to get these OSes supported on the UltimatePPC.

Before it was hurriedly (*) replaced with this:
Quote:

Haage & Partner have not been interested in Amiga stuff in a LONG time. IMHO this makes it seem very likely that these guys are bitter ex-Amigans (who didn't investigate the current situation too closely) looking to make fun of us Amigans who didn't give up. (They seem to be under some impression that H&P are still involved with OS4, but AFAIR that hasn't been the case since about 2002 if not 2001.)

(* = within less than 4.5 hours of this being mentioned on AW.net . This also indicates that they are watching AW.net, but choose not to reply for some reason.)

A further thought: So far, all "PPC Amiga" hardware that has been announced without any confirmed OS support (e.g. by OS4) has never actually become available for buying. IMHO that is because the people involved were not business-savy enough & have not enougn money to ever get an agreement for OS support (and in some cases they never intended to get OS support since it was all a hoax).

P.S. I am amazed that some people on AW.net seem to be under the impression that Hyperion would port OS4 to it *for free* (or nearly so). Even assuming PPC incompatibilities could be resolved, Hyperion would have to do a lot of work porting OS4 that would need to be paid. Never mind that it isn't Hyperion/etc that needs UltimatePPC to be able to sell something, but rather it is UltimatePPC who need Hyperion/etc to be able to sell something.

I found that funny as well. As well as the point about H&P make me think that those who behind of announcement have no single contact with OS developers, and even do not know who and what to do in last 10 year => 100% no businnes => 100% dreampipe smoke => 98% shark/coldfire/whaterver else (i keep 2% just for some miracle).

Even if card will be ever done, its just make no sense at all today to worry about it in terms of OS4 (or morphos, or whatever). And i have big doubts that somebody from os4-team will have big interest to spend in 2012 (or 2015, if it will out), on some hobby accelerator, which will be use 20-30 persons (maybe). How those dreampipe smokers think its all even can be done ? who will do it ? The team who busy like hell with everything already ? For free ? Just for fun and that "labor of love" or whater ? Big and fat doubts ! Even if choice today any new HW for port, it for sure can be anything semi-modern, but not accelerators for a3000 (holy, who ever use it today?)

Anyway, i already see on all the forums, that technically skilled ppls already explain everything, and any sane person can see how everything happens. Authors have no deep knowlege about our amiga and alike oses, they have no contacts with anyone, and they even didn't see differences beetwen our ppc cpus, and cpu which they choice.

Add to that: "announcement" , "preorders" , "in the end of year we will have it ready" , and we have have full picture of usuall amiga "business". I.e. someone do something for fun, but just show it like it something commercical, then dreampipe smokers smoke it for years, and when everything die, authors say "but it was hobby project! we told you so !" :)

Sure, i should say "i wish them luck anyway", but i can't. Its just make no sense today, sorry. If it fun-hobby project only, then be it. Just again those usuall announcements/preorders.. uff .. all repeats all the time ..
