A1222+ issue with CD/DVD drives?
Just popping in

See User information
Hi there,

I'm currently building an A1222+, but I'm having issues when using CD/DVD drives connected to the SATA on the motherboard. Initially things seem to go okay when copying a large number of files:

But then it appears that the A1222+ loses connection with the drive:

Then the Grim Reaper makes an appearance with the Mounter Task:

I've tried a number of different drives: ASUS DRW-24D5MT, Samsung SN-208 and Hitachi-LG GS40N. I've also tried a different RAM stick on the motherboard, just in case there was an issue there. I've even tried booting from the recovery USB stick in case there was something I've added causing the issue. So far I've been unable to resolve this issue.

If I use a CD/DVD drive via the USB, copying a disc works flawlessly.

Has anyone else experienced this issue or have a solution?

Kind regards,

Francis

I had similar issues when the first SATA driver builds were being tested. Steven had indicated at the time removable media wasn't yet supported, and I've not had occasion to test since. I noted that in the disk section of my guide:

http://eliyahu.org/tabor/disk.html

Looks like issues remain. That's a shame. The good news is that it seems to work with external drives connected via USB, but that's not really the same thing since, ideally, we want to use the DVD drives we might have in our cases.

Hopefully the issue will be sorted sooner rather than later. I'm really liking the A1222+, but it was quite annoying trying to install software and copy old backups I had from CD until I figured out it would work via USB.

I've ordered a USB to SATA adapter that I can hook up to the USB header on the motherboard to at least get the DVD drive working properly.

Kind regards,

Francis

For me it is good news as I have an external USB DVD/RW drive which I have been using under my MacStudio with Qemu/Peg2 AmigaOs4.1 and can now use this with the a1222 in the future if it is true as you wrote that AmigaOs4.1 supports these external drives.

It will help me to transfer a lot of data that I have already saved.

Thanks for this information.

Just make sure that the USB DVD/RW drive has an external power source as the A1222's USB ports don't have enough power on their own.

Or possibly get it working with a dual power USB cable. Just like in the old days a hub may be best. Like with any external drive cabling gets complicated.

The DVD/RW drive I want to use is very simple and requires very little power V5 with 1.6A it also has no external power source to connect.

Don't be surprised, it still has the original foliere on it

That's very similar to one of the drives I have (Hitachi-LG GP96YB70) which is the same power rating of 5V @ 1.6A. The A1222 recognised it okay and could even read from the disc, but it was unreliable using the onboard USB header as it would lose connection due to the drive drawing too much power. This was with a standard USB cable though, I don't have any of the twin USB cables to try. I also have a Plextor drive with an external power supply, which is what I was initially using to install and copy stuff from.

I did negate the power issue by using a powered USB hub (an NZXT internal USB hub 3, part no. AC-IUSBH-M3-4). Both my internal Samsung DVD drive (with a USB to SATA adapter) and external Hitachi-LG DVD drive both work fine using this hub.

Kind regards,

Francis

Just remember that USB2 standard specifies 2.5W for USB ports - i.e. 0.5A per port. You may be able to draw more if there is no overcurrent protection in the hardware, but it's not required to deliver more than that, and may even turn off power to the port if you draw too high a current.
Also, the USB stack may refuse to attach your hardware if it deems that it will drain the USB bus power budget.

Ok, I understand, thanks for the advice. I have decided to use an external USB HUB with a separate power supply to make sure there is enough power available. I hope this solution works.

Also, yesterday I was able to buy an RX 570 ITX graphics card for the ITX tower with 8GB at auction, so I can test this card in addition to the RX 550 4GB ITX to see if there are any speed differences under AmigaOs4.1 with these cards. I will open a separate thread for this test later and whoever wants to can then participate and publish their results as well.

Which tool is best suited to perform graphics card tests under AmigaOs4.1 2d/3d accelerated?

The a1222plus supports DDR3 SODIMM 64 bit interface
400Mhz, but is it also possible to use SODIMM with 1333/1600 MHz, or will the system then become unstable? I have read that this board has been tested with the SODIMM 400MHz as standard configuration with AmigaOs4.1.

For 2D our best benchmark is:
http://www.os4depot.net/share/utility/benchmark/gfxbench2d.lha

For 3D stuff I found starboxdemo:
http://www.os4depot.net/share/graphics/misc/starboxdemo.lha

I ran starbox on my X5000 with RX580:
StarBox Benchmark 1.0
Resolution: 1366 * 768
Windowed
FPS: 907.55

Cheers,

@thread

I've been following this thread with interest because I, too, have been building up my A1222+ and also have CD/DVD issues, although I think, in my case, it may be the particular CDs I'm trying to read.

I have a copy of Wordworth Office 6 and a copy of Vulcanology (the first 9 or so games by Vulcan Software - Bograts, etc), neither of which even show up on the desktop.

I have tried other CDs (mainly Amiga Future cover discs), which read OK.

The two particular ones I have problems with, I have tried in an iMac and a 2012 laptop, with no result, then in a 2015 laptop, where they do read.

The Amiga Future cover discs are professionally produced, whereas the Wordworth and Vulcanology are licensed copies, but produced by the vendor. I'm thinking that the professionally produced CDs were produced using a stronger laser, perhaps.

I seem to remember I used to have a CD/DVD writer and a CD writer in my old A1-XE, one of which was better at reading certain disks than the other.

The unit I have at present in my A1222+ is a new Asus CD/DVD/DL writer. I do have a slot loading CD/DVD writer which I'll try and see if that improves matters. I do also have an external drive which I'll try out.

@AmigaOldie

Some CDs can deteriorate over time, although it could be a combination of factors such as the lens alignment or laser quality of the drive. As you have a system that is able to read the discs, it might be worthwhile doing a 1:1 copy of them to new good quality discs (I'd recommend Verbatim CD-Rs).

Or, you could create an ISO image of the CDs and use DiskImage to mount it on the A1222, which is probably easier.

Kind regards,

Francis
