well I got my old defective through board IDE connector off cleanly on my 1200 but now I need some advice soldering the new connector to the MB as the pins are too bloody tight ..any ideas? I've heard of cold solder applied via tube then heated with a heating gun?

I don't understand the question really mate, surely you push the pins through the board and then solder each one with some solder and a standard iron?

If you can't push the pins through the board, then it is likely the board or the pins need removing of the solder that was on there previously.

Looking at the A1200 board, the IDE connector is not surface mounted, so the job /should/ be a doddle.

.I wish my digital camera wasnt down so I could upload a pic..(you know worth a thousand words & all )

anyway yes you are correct that the new connector is through the board fine but my problem is that the smallest iron tip I could find near me is still too big to do the job properly without making a mess of things.
I read somewhere that there is a solder paste that is cold applied via small tube then it could be heated with a heat gun & voila ..done

I am not sure about that, my Wella 12watt iron would do that no problem. I must admit it you are using a huge great big iron, then you will probably have a problem. Try something like:

With a soldering iron like the above I would be happy even doing SMD soldering:
