I've used a 10 metre usb extension lead with a webcam, should be ok with a printer but wouldn't want a harddrive on that length of cable.
I doubt you can push sata over a metre or so as I've not seen longer.

Ok. I should manage with max 4 metres of usb. So i'll drop the sata idea.
