ScummVM version: 2.8.0
http://os4depot.net/download.php?file=queue/scummvm.lha

Paste from offtopic in another thread -

@Raziel

I get a Grim Reaper with the new version the first time I start it, missing ScummVM.ini

Reset and restart ScummVM and I got a (I guess self saved)ScummVM.ini and everything works!

-----------

Maybe something like ScummVM searching for an .ini
and if not present, creates one while it still search and crash

This give me Deja Vu feelings.

From v2.7.0 onwards ScummVM will create an .ini file, if not present, with default settings automatically.

So, that's not it, the bug stems from somewhere else, but since I can't debug, we'll never know (or at least as long as there won't be a working denugger)

Also, if you start ScummVM right after WB boot everything works as expected, run Odyssey beforehand and you'll likely crash.

I suspect memory, gcc bugs, sobjs bugs, you Name it...

Thank you for the update!

You should be a betatester of AOS and have access to new newlib and stuff,
but but..

If i run AmigaAmp before Odyssey then Youtube will work fine,
if I don't run AmigaAmp with "h0ffman mods" Youtube in Odyssey will crash!?

Something IS wrong with AOS4.1upd2, newlib.library.kmod?

One day we will get an update, never stop believe that!

"I get random crashes (seldomly) when i first start ScummVM myself, but i can't find the cause.
It seems to be related to if one has opened another program beforehand, e.g. Odyssey...then i can nearly always trigger an ISI."

Reminds me of the bug in ShaderJoy when it crashed, rexx problem.
Posted to Capehill here about the bug and he fixed it.

arexx.class opening code was using a wrong path. However, I don't think it caused any ISI exception, but a C++ exception.

I don't know if ScummVM is explicitly opening any classes, but if it does, it can be checked with Snoopy.

Stack trace should show something, in any case.

And not even trying to switch modes, just setting the mode and apllying will end up in a crash

arexx is ruled out as well, as ScummVM (not sure about SDL2) knows nothing about arexx.

just for the record, not that it will help much:
- starting crashes of scummvm will result in a dsi
- closing crashes aka scummvm already runs, will result in isi

i wish i knew more about debugging, so i could try and run it in a vm and debug it there

edit:
oh and if anyone wishes to try their luck...the release versions are built with debugging flags disabled...i can build a full debug release on demand (if time permits and i'm on my gear)

Just shout in such case (building one from latest sources right now)

Silly me, I forgot upstream fixed it in November and there hasn't been an updated release including the correction yet. So let's wait.

I don't get DSI or Grim Reaper, ScummVM works as it should.

I downloaded the last version 2.8.0 (os4depot) with Odyssey 1.23 and started ScummVM directly from the archive. There is a short message that scummvm.ini does not exist and is then created a moment later.

ScummVM then boots into full screen and I can be used directly. You will also see that Odyssey is running in the background.

Resized Image

Edit:I can also confirm that if you close Odyssey and run ScummVM immediately afterwards, GrimReaper occurs. You have to be very quick, quit Odyssey and start ScummVM immediately, that's pretty much how it can be replicated.

I'm not sure if it helps, but I recorded the crash with Snoopy. It shows what happens between exiting Odyssey and immediately running ScummVM, right up to the DSI.

https://paste.ofcode.org/X2HreE5pbbqhNCPQH9bp5W

If there is another way to debug better, let me know and I'll be happy to help you.

I mainly use Qemu/Pegasos2, apart from the fact that I can only test with software rendering, everything works like on normal real machines. In the past it has been confirmed that the exact same errors could be reproduced on real machines, so don't worry about it.

In my opinion, the culprits are AmigaAmp and Odessey. After using them, ScummVM often crashes after execution. It doesn't always happen and is difficult to replicate

I have already downloaded the debug version of ScummVM, I assume "-d 11" activates debugging in the console/shell?

It gives me a little output but I think that won't be very helpful, if ScummVM crashes I also can't debug ScummVM as it can't produce any output.

I had the issue that when i started scummvm the screen went black and a DSI appeared...

I had my SDL prefs as default 2D render set to OpenGL and this was the issue
I have set the option of 2D render in de SDL prefs back to default, and all is fine now.

Thanks for the updated scummvm.

You may have misunderstood.

-d10, which is the maximum btw, will always print everything that comes from scummvm, be it a debug or release build

The debug build is for use with a debugger as the debug flags within the source has been set to be compile in.
I.e. if you happen to get a crash, all information can be accessed and shown by GrimReaper, instead of only basic ones with the release builds

The debug build is for use with a debugger as the debug flags within the source has been set to be compile in.
I.e. if you happen to get a crash, all information can be accessed and shown by GrimReaper, instead of only basic ones with the release builds

Ok I understand. The problem can now clearly be reproduced. Launch Odyssey, go to YouTube and play a video using MPlayer via YT.rexx for about a minute. Quit MPlayer/Odyssey and then start ScummVM. The DSI is displayed. Using this method I was able to reproduce it over and over again.

Something else about the SDL2 Prefs, if they are set to default and I start ScummVM, there is also a black screen output, so I suspect that OpenGles2/OpenGL is used for the displays.
The ScummVM output with -d9 always shows "Using SDL Video Driver "os4" no matter what prefs settings were selected in SDL2.

Is it enough for you to simply record GrimReaper if the DSI comes with the ScummVM debug build, or is this debug output not enough?

This might be interesting:
