Re: Introducing the Rear Window blog

@trixie

Thank you for porting Lopan and Shisen-Seki to OS4.

Both render beautifully on my MicroA1.

Lopan reminds me of Shanghai, which I often play under emulation. I'm new to Shisen-Seki, but I certainly enjoyed my first try at the game.

Thank you,

@Chris

Using test build 6772 here. Works well for me.

In the past I always used the Default theme, but this time I am using the AISS theme. I didn't have all the required AISS images so I borrowed some images from the default theme (hotlist-add, hotlist-rmv and closetab).

Still need to sort out the "button" that shows the warning symbols.
This "button" is on the left side of the url. Currently blank.

Other than that, this version of NetSurf is working well for me.

Thanks so much,

Update...

Responded too quickly. Next time I used that version of NetSurf, I tried Reuters and the mouse pointer disappeared and my system froze up solid. No response to reset key sequences.

I had to power off and on to recover.

First time I have ever gone to Reuters website with any Amiga web browser, so don't know if it is just bad luck or an issue with this version of NetSurf.

Update#2...

Ooookay...

Reuters website also freezes up my system using NetSurf 3.11
I had to power off and on to recover.

Perhaps my ancient system can't handle this website.

Assuming this one is build date 01 October,

OpenSSL version https://www.cy2.uk/netsurf_os4_no_r.lha

Yes, this version of NetSurf 3.12 (Dev) works well for me, with no problems encountered so far.

I am running the public version of AmigaOS 4.1 FE Update 2.

No betatest software.

@Chris

Update ...

Assuming this one is the one released on 4 October ...

https://www.cy2.uk/netsurf_os4_amissl_no_r.lha

for me, the Google search seems to eventually give a list of items, but NetSurf appears to go to sleep if I click on any of the entries.

I thought the program was hanging every time and the only way I could recover was to reset my system.

However, this last time I just waited to see if anything would happen. After about 5 to 10 minutes, the window updated with the article I was wanting to view and NetSurf was awake again.

On my system, this one seems to take more time thinking before actually displaying the selected webpage.

Whereas the OpenSSL one https://www.cy2.uk/netsurf_os4_no_r.lha

seemed to be much quicker.

This version works fine for me ...

NEW BUILD: https://www.cy2.uk/netsurf_os4_no_r.lha

This one reverts back to OpenSSL but removes any use of gethostbyname_r.

@NinjaCyborg

In the Amiga world, I went in one giant leap from AmigaOS 3.1 running on my Amiga A2000HD computer to AmigaOS 4.0 running on my MicroA1 computer. I missed alot of Amiga software and hardware enhancements during the time between those two systems.

I won't speculate on what could have been or should have been.

I am still amazed that back in the day I was surfing the net using AmiTCP and Aweb-II over a dialup modem connected to my Amiga A2000HD. Likewise, I am amazed with what I can still do on my MicroA1 using AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition Update 2 and IBrowse, Odyssey, NetSurf and other programs.

Sure, we are far behind modern Windows and Mac systems. Even my Samsung tablet is more powerful than my MicroA1.

Re: Why all AmigOS 4.1 browsers crash the AmigaOS 4.1

@Newton

Hi Newton,

It is important to tell us what kind of system you are using.

Are you running AmigaOS 4.1 on AmigaOne hardware or emulation using WinUAE?

In theory it should not matter, but some modern websites require lots of RAM. If your host system has limited amount of RAM, it may not have enough RAM to run Windows + WinUAE + AmigaOS 4.1 + web browser + view very large web pages.

My ancient OS4 system also bogs down on very large web pages.

It is a Micro-AmigaOne with PPC 750 GX CPU and 256 MB of RAM.

That is a tiny amount of RAM compared to what comes with the modern OS4 systems.

For web surfing ...

I use IBrowse 3.0a for most of the Amiga friendly websites.

I use Origyn Web Browser 3.31 for amiga.org.

NetSurf 3.11 works well for me as an alternative to IBrowse.

Odyssey Web Browser 1.23 r5 (Jan 2 2022) generally works ok, but sometimes I get error messages about RAM allocation and then Odyssey kind of locks up.

AWEB APL 3.5.12 still works for some Amiga friendly websites.

Anyways ... Please give us more details.

Cheers,
redfox

Today the following public releases have been made available to download on Updater utility:

I think amigakit uses the same generic message every time they announce an update of any kind.

Details (a list) usually follow this message.

For example, if they are updating commands or gadgets, the list is longer than one entry.

I'm not defending them, just an observation.
