Re: Decreasing compatiblitiy of OS4 a good thing?

Just wondering how others use E-UAE.

I emulate an Amiga classic with AmigaOS3 on my OS4 system.

I use a very old version of E-UAE.

I run the emulation in fullscreen mode, so the "classic" Amiga Workbench appears to take over the entire screen. The Workbench screen opens with a RAM disk and Workbench disk. The Workbench disk contains drawers just like on a classic AmigaOS3 system.

I have three different configurations:
- an Amiga A2000HD running AmigaOS 3.1
- an Amiga A2000HD running AmigaOS 3.2.3
- an Amiga A1200 with UAEGfx running AmigaOS3.2.3

I set up the first one many years ago. It has alot of software from my original Amiga A2000HD computer.

The second one has AmigaOS 3.2.3 and some of my old favourites.

The third one has GlowIcons and a higher screen resolution but uses a huge amount of RAM on my host OS4 system.

So basically, I am running an AmigaOS3 Workbench on top of my OS4 system. I know how to mount adf files as floppy disks, but so far I have not required access to my printer or my network from inside the emulation.

---

Some of the comments above appear to suggest another way to use E-UAE.

I thank all the participants in this discussion. As a user who is not fully aware of what goes on under the hood, I appreciate that there could be ways to make the system better. I just don't want to loose the ability to run system friendly 68K programs.

I disabled Kickstart/petunia.library.kmod in my Kicklayout in June 2020 and I have been running my OS4 system without petunia ever since then (5 years and 8 months).

;MODULE Kickstart/petunia.library.kmod

Even with petunia disabled, some magic in OS4 allows me to run the following 68K software:

BackUp software by Daniel Westerberg (onyxsoft)
Final Writer 97
TVPaint
PPaint
Cinema4D-Demo
ARexx
RxMUI
rexxbgui.library
rexxtricks.library
MicroRexx
AWNPipe
SimpleMail
YAM
Newscoaster
AmigaWriterDemo
PostIt (note program)

There are some others but these are the most obvious ones.

I use ARexx and RxMUI daily in my scripts and ARexx programs.

BTW, AmigaOS 4.1 FE Update 3 is very stable on my MicroA1.

Re: Decreasing compatiblitiy of OS4 a good thing?

Please forgive this nostalgic journey ...

My first Amiga was an A2000HD with Workbench 1.3 and a generous suite of software. I upgraded to AmigaOS 3.1 and added some more RAM, CD-ROM drive and flicker-fixer card. I did not have an accelerator card, so all my software was compatible with 68000 CPU, including Final Writer 97.

My next Amiga was my MicroA1 with AmigaOS 4.0 Developer Pre-release software. I purchased a motherboard bundled with OS4 and received the motherboard and a white CD-R containing OS4. I think it was the first update that officially supported the MicroA1. After many enquiries and many months of waiting, I finally received my official AmigaOS 4.0 Pre-release CD and I was able to register with Hyperion and receive the next software update.

By that time, I had been using OS4 for many months and I was transfering software from my old A2000HD to my MicroA1. Most system friendly software worked just fine with OS4, however, I needed to use E-UAE for some of my old favourites (Appetizer suite, Microfiche filer and Amiga Vision).

I was also collecting some other 68K software, such as TVPaint, PPaint, Imagine and Real3D.

As the years passsed, more PPC compatible software became available and I now have a mixture of 68K and PPC software.

-----

So, back to the 68K compatibility issue ...

If it is so important to get rid of 68K compatibility, why not just bite the bullet and produce your new OS with no compatibility whatsoever. Call it XYZLinux with a nostalgic "Amiga" skin on the desktop. While you're at it, migrate to some other processor and let PPC and 68K rest in peace. Just let us know ahead of time so we can decide if we want to join your journey.

Re: Decreasing compatiblitiy of OS4 a good thing?

Software compatibility with 68K software was the main reason I purchased my OS4 system way back in 2004. It allows me to run Final Writer 97, TVPaint, PPaint and ARexx. Some of my other software only works under emulation with E-UAE running on OS4.

So I have a few questions ...

If we get rid of 68K compatibility, where are the software products that will replace our old favourites?

Are there actually programmers willing to do the work?

I am not a developer or a beta tester. I'm just a regular user.

Here is a snapshot of the software I use most on OS4:

NotePad
Multiview
Final Writer 97
IgnitionOS4 spreadsheet
TVPaint
PPaint
AmiDVD
IBrowse Web Browser
NetSurf Web Browser
Odyssey Web Browser
Soliton MUI-based card game
Many ARexx based scripts and programs

MicroA1
AmigaOS 4.1 FE Update 3
Enhancer Software Core Edition

I purchased Enhancer Software V1.5 and Enhancer Software V2.2
but currently have installed only Enhancer Core, AmiDVD,
SmartFileSystem v1.293 and diskcache.library.

Thank you so much Joerg. I downloaded AmiDVD 1.54 via Updater.

It works beautifully. I made a bootable backup of my system partition.

Thanks,

I think I found another casualty,

Today I was trying to use MakeCD to create a backup of my system partition, but MakeCD crashed while making an image file. I think it was scanning my system partition at the time.

The last time I used MakeCD was in 2015.

I wish I could use AmiDVD but it does not work with Update 3.

I hope Odyssey 3.0 will be successful. Kudos to all involved.

My system is a MicroA1 with 256 MB RAM, which is a very small amount of RAM compared to the systems most other people use for OS4.

For me, Odyssey 3.0 Alpha launches, does the font thing, shows the main GUI window and eventually locks up. I got further when I changed the screenmode from 32 bit to 16 bit. I was able to display Amigans website.

For now, I will continue to use IBrowse 3.0a and Odyssey 1.23r5 and NetSurf 3.12 development test builds.

Cheers,
redfox

Update...

One very pleasant surprise for me since Update 3 ...

Odyssey Web Browser v 1.23 r5 (Jan 01 2022) is performing very well on my ancient MicroA1 system.

With Update 2, I would often see "Failed to allocate" memory messages from Odyssey. Changing active connections from 16 to 8 helped but did not entirely eliminate the problem.

Since updating to AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition Update 3 this issue seems to be resolved.

No dancing bananas yet, but I am very happy to be able to use Odyssey again.

The new alpha version of Odyssey freezes up on my system, probably because I do not have enough RAM available.

Update...

I had to update NetSurf and Snoopy ...

NetSurf 3.12 Dev CI #6994 working fine.

Snoopy 54.127 working fine.

Otherwise, my only casualities are AmiDVD, Imagine and Real3D.

Imagine would launch ok for Update 2 but window was too big for the screen.
Imagine does not launch after Update 3.

Real3D has crashed during launch ever since I installed AmigaOS 4.1 FE, so I think it is a lost cause.

So, I think Imagine and Real3D are toast.

AmiDVD 1.53 (06/03/2022) from A-EON Enhancer Software 2.2 was working just fine on Update 2 and quit working after Update 3.

I hope we can get a working version of AmiDVD soon, because it has been my main backup tool for many years (and many versions of AmiDVD).

Cheers,
redfox

@AmigaSociety

Thanks for expressing yourself so well in this video.

I also liked your previous video showing Candi with autumn theme.

My own update went smoothly on my MicroA1. This ancient system has builtin Radeon 7000 graphics.

Usually, I do a backup to CD-R using AmiDVD before I do an update. This time I just used a backup program to copy everthing from my system partition to a spare partition.

Sadly AmiDVD does not work after update 3.

Cheers,
redfox
