@AmiGubbe

You can dual boot OS3.9 and OS4. I have both installed on my A4000.

More Questions:

Is it possible to have "dual" boots. One with f.i. OS3.x and one with OS4.0. Some old stuff, like games and such will not run under OS4.0. I read that there was some problems with WHDLoad. Can I use ONE HD for Dualboot or do I need two separate hds?

How much diskspace does a "normal" OS4 installation need?

Is it worth upgrading to OS4? I am currently using OS3.9 / Kick3.1.

Short answer: YES!

Anyway if you wait for new hardware doesn't hold your breath for Amiga inc. SAM is ready, we must only hope the court case finish soon.

That wont happen to the custom chips?

No. All custom chips are used by OS4.

OS4 has got a very high performing 68k emulator which
I guess easily out performs a 68020@14MHz even on a
604 +200Mhz PPC.

@IOWASURFER

I don't have a "real" Amiga any more but when I did it was a 3000/060-ppc 6053/144 megs ram/etc.Now I use AmiKit
and compared with some old test i did using amigod on the 3000,it is faster.But then the 605e never did work all that well :( So in short,sell that Amiga while it's still working and get a decent spec pc and run XP/AmiKit/Mandriva on it

Way better then on AmigaOne, because you have custom chips and we do not.

After reading some lines from Rogue (developer? of os4) it seems like the 680x0 processor is being shut down and is no more in use. That wont happen to the custom chips?

Quote:
I think you should not upgrade because of the 680x0 software, but because PowerPC software runs many times faster and more secure.

Good point there.

Is there a way to change my settings on this page so the dates show in the 'American' format (month/day/year) instead of the current format (year/month/day)?

@LiveForIt

with the virtual machining I was thinking of launching non-native material within a wrapping process of some kind...

anyway... I will have to leave things there until I can sort out an AOS4 machine to test some ideas out on...

donations or use of a machine to get something past "idea" into a functional
toolkit would be appreciated,

I can be found with this same username on UtilityBase for donation info

@Atheist

Hehe you talk like I did 1994. Back then I was a fanatic
Amiga fan aswell, "everything Amiga do is better".
Too bad that isn't true anymore, and probably hasn't
been for atleast 15 years.
I grew up and got a more open mind to things. Windows
doesn't suck anymore (without having tested it before).
XP is actually usable and supports everything I want. It
simply works. That doesn't mean I want better things or
dislike Amiga. I actually like the control Amiga OS gives
me.

You can't seriously mean that we shouldn't use MP
because we should be different???
If MP doesn't cause bloat or make the OS less responsive
and offer you a virtual enviroment for classic software,
so what's the problem???

Sounds to me you're more into retro computing and not
OS4 and more modern stuff. I mean keeping the
hardware and software mainly the same forever.
Am I wrong?

@IOWASURFER

I agree.

I suggest very strongly that there is only one-way out of this mess. Whether Hyperion, Amiga Inc or, hopefully, both release OS4 for the PS3.

Cut the Gordian Knot, break with the past and the idea that we must have our own hardware now, and look at the PS3 console as a Fixed Hardware model onto which we can not only graft our OS to, but also find a new and expanding market.

Break the deadlock in a practical way, my fear is the whole ship will simply submerge and never resurface and all the good work done will languish in neglect.

I would also point out that a quick booting OS, that is cheery and has X11 server technology, is just what the PS3 needs.

Linux is a square peg in a round whole and that is the only option at the moment.

Sony, whether it is aware of it or not, needs something like OS4. That is not a position we have been in in a long long time.

Booting from PS GAME Os into OS4 would take less time than most games to load, quitting out of it is as simple as any game (no shutdown required).

God I hope someone is reading this that can do something about it and soon!!

@all

MikeB mentioned PS3 Home which is rumoured for open beta release in three days time, with a stage one release perhaps around November.

There is a good deal of significance in this. At first it will probably not appear to much, a handy meeting place, some communications and a small market place.

However, the potential, if it is not stuffed up, is enormous.

People should take a look at Second-life, I am not recommending it, but there are features there worth considering, and aspects of these are inherent in PS-Home.

Virtual worlds have a lot of potential power, especially for the internet.

I call it the principle Virtual Geographic Self-Organization.

Instead of vying for notice on the Net, by intrusive advertising, sometimes very misleading, consider the power of Virtual Geography. Consider, for instance, a town of Porn (probably more a metropolis given the size of the industry). Go there and you know what you are getting, moreover, be there and your customers come willingly.

Apply the same logic, to any other industry or service. OSland, a place for Operating Systems, within a metropolis of Computing in the region of Software.

In terms of commerce and a better functioning web, virtual space in a geographical sense, self-organises, perhaps into stalls and shop fronts. The point being there is every reason to be in the right place (or several right places), and not popping up where you are not sought.

It is possible to staff shops, that is have people able to answer real questions. The communications aspect is very strongly developed.

If Sony, in the long term, does it right, and there are signs of this (the ability to kit private rooms with HTML pages, the market - mostly up market, spaces, the use of secure deposit based monetary system), then PS home is a power in its own right.

AmigaOS should be there in its early days, the first release I don't expect a lot from PS Home, but if they keep developing it, then it could well be the place to be for practically anything.

Endless google lists, could well become swiftly a thing of the past.

Does a game like Wings or Zack McCracken run smoother or look better under emulation or is it just a cheap knock off of Amiga hardware?

Recently I gave one of my A1200/'030 config to my daughter with some whdload games.
That was a long time when I last touched it, but since the config is assembled again I found that it is catching me more and more frequently. Playing Wings, Cannon Fodder and Shufflepack Cafe makes the feeling that no emulation can reach the real thing.

Do you thought that how the world could look like today if whdload present in 1990? I think it would be a bit different. :)

I guess I really would like a opinion on if Buying and keeping Amiga Hardware is actually unnecessary anymore or should we all just turn to EMULATORS for our favorite games and utils..

I personally would rather run my Amiga at 14mhz then watch the blue screen of death all day long............
Joe..

bluescreen is mostly a thing from win95/98/Me now days windows xp just reboots, how ever booting up windows, just so you can use amiga is nothing for me, after boot i like start working, and i like to work whit amiga not windows, so if any thing should emulated then it shuld be windows, not amiga.

i don't use amiga to play games, and if i did, then i probely play games on xbox or ps3, way spend more time booting windows to play a amiga game then booting up a real a amiga start playing at once.

I feel an hair of frustration by diehard Amiga users/fans here...

I believe until we see something astonishing new no one outside of the AMIGA lovers base will ever take a second look at us or the AMIGA again........ Except as footnotes to computer history...........

I know this post sounds a lot like a lot of fast air coming from a balloon but if they get their crap together and port 4.0 to the classics it will start a change reaction of old/new users I am sure... back to see whats new.. and geeks = sheek maybe this will inspire a new generation or 2 of users who will take up the Amiga Banner and carry it on and on........
