Thomas Wenzel has uploaded a new AmigaOS4 specific engine for AmigaAmp.

External decoding engine for AmigaOS 4 version 2.23
---------------------------------------------------
AmigaAMP comes with built in support for mpega.library to allow playback
of MP3 files even on slower 68k based Amigas.

However, there's an alternative. It's called the "AmigaAMP decoding
engine". It's more accurate than mpega.library and it has some extra
features as well.

The executable is called "External" and has to be placed in the "Engines"
subdirectory of AmigaAMP.

In the AmigaAMP config tool this new engine will show up on the system
tab as "AmigaOS4" which you have to select. Autodetect might also work
but once you know which engine you want to run it's better select it
directly.

The advantage of this engine over the built in mpega.library support
is that the equalizer acutally works and the visualisation is more
accurate as well. Also it's using floating point operations which gives
higher audio quality than integer math.

Re: New AmigaAmp OS4 Decoding Engine.
The AmigaAmp site only shows version 2.20 on it's front page, and v2.20 on it's download page.
So, I presume, the v2.23 on OS4Depot is the latest version, and the website is playing catch-up.

Re: New AmigaAmp OS4 Decoding Engine.
Sam users are encouraged to download this version if they have been experiencing random lockups with the previous version of the engine. The announcement does not mention it but the engine has been recompiled with the latest SDK binutils. The improvement in stability is MASSIVE on my Sam: three days of continous playing and no lockups so far!

Re: New AmigaAmp OS4 Decoding Engine.
Just installed v2.23, and I get the error "Can't start Engines/External!"

Even though I select external in the config, this error message does not change.

EDIT -********

I had AmigaAMP v2.18 installed.
I've upgraded to v2.20 and it works fine.
Sorry.

Re: New AmigaAmp OS4 Decoding Engine.
Another welcome update to my most used application under OS4.1 on my sam440ep.

I was not seeing any problems before, but that may only be because I am running a debug kernel rather than the standard one on my sam to work round other problems.

Re: New AmigaAmp OS4 Decoding Engine.
@dwyloc

Hm, interesting - I also run the debug kernel on a Sam 667MHz / OS4.1, and the previous decoding engine for AmigaOS4 (version 2.22) would lock up quite often when playing MP3s. Anyway this is now history with the new version so - THANKS, THOMAS!
