Software News : It's done!

Software News

Leuven, Belgium, 24 December 2006.

Hyperion Entertainment is very pleased to announce the immediate availability (for registered AmigaOne customers) of Amiga OS 4.0, The Final Update.

Originally released in May of 2004, Amiga OS 4.0 (www.amigaos4.com) is the most stable, modern and feature-rich incarnation to date of the multi-media centric operating system launched by Commodore Business Machines (CBM) in 1985 with which it still retains a high degree of compatibility.

Amiga OS 4.0, The Final Update is the culmination of 5 years of development and takes the form of a stand-alone ISO image which contains a full installation of all Amiga OS 4.0 components.

A list of new features can be found on www.hyperion-entertainment.biz.

Availability of PowerPC hardware suitable for operation with Amiga OS 4.0 will be announced by third parties early 2007.

The Hyperion Entertainment management would like to take this opportunity to wish all our customers and supporters a pleasant holiday season!

 Re: It's done!
Thank you SO much to all the Hyperion team, the Alpha & Beta testers, the programmers that have contributed 3th party software. Everyone that contributed from Eyetech. Everyone at Amiga Inc. & everyone I've forgotten. It's taken a lot of people to make this happen & I for one more than appreciate what you've all done.

After answering a million questions that are inevitable, kick back & enjoy the holiday season.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year, FuZion.

 Re: It's done!
I imagine it will take a long time for users to find all the new features. I'm still finding stuff and I'm a beta tester.

Next up is the SDK for me. There have been plenty of changes and improvements to the APIs since update 4 which I'm sure many of you will be very interested in. Ah, the work never ends...

 Re: It's done!
Thank you to everyone involved!

I remember one of the Friedens (can't remember
which one!), years ago at one of the Big Bash's
showed me an early task scheduler and message port
system on his A1. OS4 on the A1 has certainly
grown since then, and now it is released I can't
thank them enough, and everyone that has been
involved in this project.

I love using OS4 and hopefully will do for years
to come.

3 Cheers for OS4 Final! ..and
one for the year ahead!

Cheers!
Bean.

 Re: It's done!
Well, I don't know what to say, I'm speechless!!!!!

First off, I agree with all of the above posts, for starters.... 101% (That number isn't binary. !)

Secondly, while I am THRILLED that this has occurred, there are so many that need desperately HW to share in the glory!!! (Like me, who wants one more machine!!)

Thirdly. I stand beind every "AmigaOne! AOS4.x!" tagline I ever wrote!! 101% (That number isn't binary either! !)

This is THE BEST EVER single user OS that EXISTS!!!!!!!

That's the way it is, and I think that that's the way it should remain. (Or always be a version of, at the very least.)

And since, mostly it's been covered by others (and I wholeheartedly agree), I can probably only add this:

Your perserverence WILL COME to major rewards in the future....

AmigaOne(NG)! AOS4.x!! This is The Beginning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've managed to do an update over my installation, but it's not for the faint of heart and YMMV, especially
if you had old applications that may no longer work under 4.0 final or somehow yeld system instability.

It's not recommended to do that, since it's likely to break on some stuff... for example, the old AHI drivers don't work anymore since the new memory system requires proper use of virtual to physical mapping.

There's also been a restructuring going on, meaning that the old Tools directory is gone now and it's contents went to Utilities and System... So if you just install on top of an old installation, you will still have the Tools directory with old stuff in it and might not even notice that...

@NTN

It was always my plan to do a complete reinstall when os4 final is out. The harddrive I planned to use has been used elsewhere though so I simply will have to buy another drive.

 Re: It's done!
Indeed it's not an operation to be suggested.

But I had quite some stuff around in SYS: .
And I knew what had changed and whatnot (like the disappearing Tools dir).
I shall also mention that I was upgrading from something rather close to
4.0 final.
