![]() Should i create a post for problem about amiga os for classic ? i have problem about graphics that get corrupted on the top border of the window and the amiga screen..
My config is AMIGA 1200+MEDIATOR+PPC+128Mbram+VOODOO 3 3000 I have also problem with the resolutions i can use only 800x600 because higher resolution are wrongly displayed even with the right settings of my monitor ( the same that i use with my micro ).. |

Well, one does wonder what would be required to get the classic os4 package to run on the SAM. In terms of drivers and such. As a community effort separated from Hyperion and ACube. Amiga Inc (or whatever they are called this afternoon) wouldn't be able to say much about that, licensed or not. All the while Hyperion/Acube gets more sales from the classic version. Edit: Sort of like AmiKit. An installer with the required drivers and patches that requires the classic OS4 CD. |

The classic kernel is written for 603/604 CPU's, while the SAM440 has a 440 (as the name implies), which pretty much ruins the plan. The CPU is totally different. |

Just as a separate discussion. There's generally large differences between different ppc processors? In contrast to say x86 processors I mean. As there's usually no problems installing an old redhat linux on a todays x86 processor that wasn't even though of back when the distro was made. Or is it that the x86 bios takes care of setting up the system and a corresponsing functionality has to be built into os4 exec directly since there is no firmware to provide it for the os? If so, can this be layered in some way to keep such specifics away from exec and just let exec run on any ppc op-code compatible cpu while other lower level modules are needed to tie it to the specific cpu's? |

Quote: There's generally large differences between different ppc processors? In contrast to say x86 processors I mean. As there's usually no problems installing an old redhat linux on a todays x86 processor that wasn't even though of back when the distro was made. That's not really comparable. Actually, the 60x/7xx/74xx are a different CPUs compare to the 440. The 440 uses a different MMU (Book E style). It's mainly aimed at being an embedded CPU, hence it has no hardware-loaded MMU table (not even hardware assisted like on the 603e), to eliminate the need for a large MMU table. You can load 64 translation registers, if that's enough for your system, you don't need an MMU table. The 64 bit implementations (970, Cell) have yet another MMU model (although they can use the 32 bit bridge to become compatible). The different PowerPC cpu's have the same user-mode code, but in "kernel" mode, they differ (MMU handling, cache handling, CPU feature handling etc) Quote: Or is it that the x86 bios takes care of setting up the system and a corresponsing functionality has to be built into os4 exec directly since there is no firmware to provide it for the os? The x86 cpu's are all desktop/server CPU's, they aren't meant for small-scale systems like the 440, therefore, all of them handle the MMU in the same way (don't know if there's a difference between AMD and Intel chips, though, but I suspect not). Quote: If so, can this be layered in some way to keep such specifics away from exec and just let exec run on any ppc op-code compatible cpu while other lower level modules are needed to tie it to the specific cpu's? Actually, that's what the HAL is for. It's separated into machine and CPU (and a common) part. The machine part deals with machine specific issues, like PCI and interrupt controllers, and the CPU part deals mainly with MMU, caches and on-chip timers (and interrupt controller if it's on-chip). |

In short 'yes' to my first question then. Quote:
And os4 classic has that level of HAL layering (Ie the cpu specific parts) right now, making it at least in in theory possible to just replace those parts with something that uses the same api's? Or is all/part of it compiled into the same binary?( either by necessity or design) |

Or is all/part of it compiled into the same binary?( either by necessity or design) It's compiled into the same binary. There are multiple reasons for this, mostly because it's easier that way and makes it a bit more efficient (some parts of the HAL are constants compiled into the standard code). Dynamically linking it would be possible, but isn't really necessary. |

Btw, would it not be possible to let a core components support a few if not all of the cpu types? Depending on cpu, different code gets executed and different sets of constants are used. |
