A new version of scanner driver XSane for AmiCygnix is now available on OS4-depot. It includes the current versions 0.999 of XSane and 1.0.27 of the sane backends.
Currently only scanners with USB connector or with network interface are supported.

New in this release:
* The driver software "Sane" has been updated to version 1.0.27. Many backends have been redesigned and two new backends added:
  - "epsonds" for the support of Epson DS devices.
  - "pieusb" for the support of PIE and Reflecta devices.
* The driver "HPLIP" of the manufacturer Hewlett Packard was ported in the current version 3.19.8. It supports over 500 HP scanners or all-in-one devices.
  Currently only devices connected to the network are supported!

Features of XSane:
* Display an image in a viewer.
* Saves images in these picture formats:
- JPEG
- PDF
- PNG

- TIFF
* Convert images into ASCII text using the OCR software "gocr". The program gocr V0.52 is incuded in this package.
* Do a photocopy - send a scanned image to the printer.
* Create multipage documents (PDF, PS, TIFF).
* Send a fax - needs an external command like "sendfax".
* Send a scanned image by e-mail.
* Color managemant (CMS).
* Batch processing
* Can be used as a gimp plug-in (Gimp 2.6.11).
* And much more...

 XSane 0.999
Hello, What a surprise! I was sure it wouldn't work but I tried and... ...my HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 3635 scanner did a very first preview! I thought the biggest chance is to connect some scanner with USB. There are plenty second hand, cheap devices but I realized that I already have one. Then I read that only network connected HP devices are utilized. I was sure something wouldn't work this way :-P It wasn't detected automatically so I had to connect the device with my router, find out what IP it has and choose its name in a long list of Hpaio backend. Then I inserted IP address and start XSane. I had no time to play more but I did a fast preview and it worked. I have to do more tests of course... Thanks, Edgar!

@mr

Really good news

Did you use the tool "HPLIP-Selector" for this? It is located in the "Software" drawer.
I've added an snapshot on OS4-depot. Maybe not everyone noticed this tool.

Sure, I did. I was not precise enough.

 Re: AmigaOS 4: Enhanced version of XSane 0.999 for AmiCyg...
Thanks for this. Nice user interface. I tried it with my network connected HP Color Laserjet MFP M477, using a different back end in the list. (Mine's not listed.) No luck yet. But it holds promise if a back end eventually makes its way to the project.

 Re: AmigaOS 4: Enhanced version of XSane 0.999 for AmiCyg...
@ Paul

The problem with your HP Color Laserjet MFP M477 is, that it uses the scan protocol "SOAP2", for which HPLIP needs an external plugin. This plugin is only available in binary form for Linux, no sources are available .

I don't think that there is an other backend for this model, sorry.

@all

If someone wants to know, if a HP device is supported, launch the tool "HPLIP-Selector", which is included in the XSane package

I've made some quick tests with different resolutions. Eveyrything seems very good , rather slow (especially high res scanning and editing such big picts) on my SAM440, but very usable. Only one problem-freez when trying to quit XSane (standalone version). No crashlog, unfortunately. SAM440 flex, 1GB, R9250.

Good to hear that it works for you

The speed is a problem, especially on slower systems. I know, this should be better.
I also have sometimes problems while shutdown a standalone launched application. Seems to be a problem of the display drivers, but I'm not sure. Does the complete system freeze?

Yes, complete freeze. I did several tests and only when I close XSane itself, system freezes. Closing Xsever window while XSane works in standalone mode or shutting down in desktop mode does not crash.

@ mr2

Please try this:

Type into an amiga shell:

SetEnv SAVE "Cygnix/XSERVER_XPORT_MODE" "0"

and try it again. Maybe this helps.

O.K. - second try:

SetEnv SAVE "Cygnix/XDRIVER_USE_XSHUTDOWNTOOL" "1"

Maybe this works better? If not, reset this with

SetEnv SAVE "Cygnix/XDRIVER_USE_XSHUTDOWNTOOL" "0"

Hi, Edgar - very nice update, but I suppose I'm falling into the same category as Paul, my device is a HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw.

Unfortunately the same problem - needs also support of the "SOAP2" scan protocol, sorry .
Only a few Color LaserJet devices are working.

 HP Deskjet 1050
Thnaks, but unfortuantely doesn't work with my HP DeskJet 1050. It comes up with an "I/O" error and closes.

Please notice, that this port of the HPLIP backend only supports scanners connected to the network. USB is not working at the moment.
