Software News : Cube: 1 - The single and multy player FPS for AOS4

Software News

The yonger brothers of Cube series (there is 3: Cube1, Cube2 and AssaultCube) are ported to amigaos4 !

Grab it from os4depot (for now in upload query).

There is few screenshots (1024x768, 800x600, 640x480):
Resized Image Resized Image Resized Image

And video in action on my peg2/1ghz/radeon9250/aos4.1u2 on youtube here

The game feels very stable and never crashes (well, on my setup, so you need test it yourself), with all that music/sounds and good FPS even on our slow opengl realisation !

Check the readme on os4depot for more information and docs inside the archive about how tunning and tweak the game.

There is also work in progress on Cube2 and AssaultCube, and there is video in action of AssaultCube. A bit buggy for now (pretty visibly, there is no hands and weapons in it), so its work in progress for now.

Enjoy !

Hey, isn't this one of the games that Wouter van Oortmerssen (author of AmigaE) wrote, before being hired by Crytek to work on Far Cry?

Ah, so I can consider this as an Amiga game.

 Re: Cube: 1 - The single and multy player FPS for AOS4
I tried to give this a go, but it required a lot of sobjs which I don't have, and I really can't be bothered to spend time looking for them.

So while it looks good, I've no idea how well it works.

Os should say which sobjs you don't have, and they all on os4depot.

But yep, i start to feel that all that Sobj hell pretty annoing (maybe you as os4 developer can as well think about how to do sobj realisation more friendly for users ?:) )

 Re: Cube: 1 - The single and multy player FPS for AOS4
@kas1e
Ideally OS4 would have a list of known 3rd-party SObj's (and libraries), and offer to download/install them when they are found to be missing? The list of 3rd party stuff could be kept up-to-date with AmiUpdate, and the installations themselves could be done with AmiUpdate too... Sounds like a job for Rigo :)

edit: Although come to think of it, perhaps kas1e should have been able to include an installer which automatically downloaded/installed those libraries.

 Re: Cube: 1 - The single and multy player FPS for AOS4
@CrhisH
Yep. Or maybe just better to include to the OS all the latest version of Sobjes (widely used). These like: vorbis, mikmod, flac , smpeg and alt.

But from other side its my bad: i should compile static version as well (i mean shared exe and static exe, as usually do on unix developers).. But by some strange reassons i think that is not a problem, and that is today all active os4 users, have all the necessary sobjes.

Looks like Rigo not a gamer, and he meet with sobjs hell :) (welcome :) )

ps. will build static version for the next upload as well.

@ Kas1e : thanks !

yes please, generate static version by default, as Huno does.

Although the exe are biggers, there is no problem if you dont have the lib or sobj or if you update them and this makes sure it will work everywhere

But you are forced to use this SOBjs ?

How about using "old" .library instead ?

Nope, i not forced here. I just not think that usage of sobj will give a problems for any active os4 user who play in games. But yep, i should make shared + static bins in future :)

@All
For everyone who dislike sobjs-hell, there is a static binary, just download archive from os4depot, and replace old binary by that one. I will add it to next upload (when someone will found any bugs, just to avoid reuploading of the same archive).

 Re: Cube: 1 - The single and multy player FPS for AOS4
Well, AmiUpdate already does maintain shared objects etc via the third party SdkServer which is controlled by SpotUP.

That said, one of the objs that was missing was the libogg.so, so I downloaded it from the SdkServer, but there is no .so in the archive. It was at this point I gave up.

I also tried to create a sensible approach to the SObjs: hell when it first appeared on OS4, but as most of them don't contain any sort of version information, I quickly gave up.

As kas1e mentioned, I'm not gamer, and I don't install every .so I can find. As a result of this, I would appreciate a version linked with static objects too, or else supply the .so's required in the archive.

Simon

EDIT: Thanks for the static version, it works just fine here on my XE. I'm currently running around the maps on my own, and I'm not dead yet :)

Check static bin in post above, pretty interesting to know how fast (or slow) it will woks for you. If i remember right you have decent enough aos-machines with more or less good cpu ?

 Re: Cube: 1 - The single and multy player FPS for AOS4
@kas1e
I have a better suggestion than what I first wrote:

You *should have been able to* include an installer which automatically downloaded/installed the required libraries/SObjs.

At the moment you have to rely on the user to do this, but if there was some tool that could semi-automatically do it on installation (perhaps using the AmiUpdate system), this would make things a lot easier.

What I am thinking of is that you could include an installer script which says "Xxxx.sobj" is required, and if it not installed than it get's AmiUpdate to install it for the user.

Don't ask things just because "others" thinks that sobjs are the devil. If you miss jpeg.library is the same if you miss libjpeg.so.
This is an old story.

@CrhisH
Naah .. I never like all those "too smart installer", which in end give only problems, but not solutions. Servers for downloads are can die/switchoff, installer are write too many words about nothing, all in all for me better choice that do 2 version : 1 shared (so, all the smart enough will found all what they need), and 2: static (for lazy ones, who not want to boring with anything).

@Samo79
Yep, afxgroup are right. For example in shared version of that game, i use that shared libs: libogg.so, liboggvorbis.so, libpthread.so and something else which i do not remember. If that will be not sobj, but library instead, then you by the same way will need to download ogg.library, vorbis.library, pthread.library and so on.

Why it start to be visibly only now, if sobj and .library are the same by idea you can ask ? Because today projects start to be more or less heavy, with many dependeces. Library or Sobj there make not big sense, only that with library you have version number, what a bit easy for mainainig.

 Re: Cube: 1 - The single and multy player FPS for AOS4
The shared and static version are equally fast (who could have guessed? )

The strange thing is that I get the same frame rates at 640x480 up to 1920x1080 on my SAM-flex 800MHz radeon 9250.

Around the spawning point it's ~12 fps. When I go outside I get ~8fps (exact same spot in all resolutions). Seems that there's a bandwidth limitation in my SAM. I wonder if it's got something to do with the slow GFX memory speed as uncovered by that Ragemem benchmark tool.

Unfortunately, the single player maps are totally unplayable on my systems

 Re: Cube: 1 - The single and multy player FPS for AOS4
Nice port - but, yes, there's something broken with weapon use and thus unplayable. It's really fast on my PegasosII and somehow nearly usable on my SAM440ep (667MHz) - maybe it can be tweaked to behave more usable.

EDIT: Couldn't stand that default tool icon -> http://www.amigans.net/modules/myalbum/photo.php?lid=338

 Re: Cube: 1 - The single and multy player FPS for AOS4
@Andrea

Well, i'm not asking because others, i'm asking because sometimes i note duplications on my SOBjs folder, for example libraries with name xxx.so.8 or similar when maybe the same lib (but not from the same developer/software) is already present with a different name.

To be clear i've nothing againts SOBjs but maybe would be better to use them only *when is mandatory* for cartain external project, conversely we can always use .library instead, i think they are perfectly legal, AmigaOS itself use standard Amiga .library

Aniway ...

Does AmiUpdate have a system to detect and automatically grab and install dependencies? Is it able to differentiate between dependencies of different forms, such as knowing if you have libogg.library but need libogg.so?

Provided AmiUpdate is told about dependencies, then yes. ie: If you select an update that requires another, that too will be selected for updating.

Just as idea: Maybe it possible for you to cooperate with os4depot, and handle all that sobjs stuff over it ? Like adding one more "server" to amiupdate, which will check all the stuff by os4depot uploads. That will give all the new versions, and without need for developers/porters to worrying about amiupdate at all.

 Re: Cube: 1 - The single and multy player FPS for AOS4
The whole idea of opening up the public database to account holders was to take the workload away from me, I'm certainly not about to add a lot more work by adding every file on os4depot.

If it's too much work for a developer to add one entry to the database, then it won't get done.

Anyway, this is off topic here. I suggest to start a forum thread if you want to continue.

Yes, I think that's *one* reasonable solution (and not a surprising answer coming from someone who dislikes using installers!)...

...but if everyone had to compile two versions for every program they compiled, it would soon get silly (wasting time, space, & bandwidth). It would make more sense if there was an EASY way for "lazy" people (who may not know HOW to find the right version of some cryptic SObj - or else like Rigo simply not have the time to do it) to automatically download & install stuff.

This solution has the same benefit as your solution - which is that it is an OPTIONAL solution that the user could ignore & install manually if they wish.

ALSO, this solution could be extended to Amiga libraries (not just SObjs), for which your solution will NOT work.

And in fact, it sounds like this might already be possible using AmiUpdate. But I haven't looked at it, so I don't know.

Great port, runs nice here (so far) on my Sam440-flex 733mhz. Seems like a pretty decent game too unlike many of the SDL/Python ports we've had of late.
