AmiDVD DL error

I am using the latest AmiDVD v1.46 (27/05/2008), and I noticed in the readme
that from v1.45 dvd+r DL is supported. I am using Datawrite 8x8.5GB DVD+R DL discs
and get the following errors in AmiDVD output window.

Quote:
SCSI command 54 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 failed

I am writing the dvd on the fly, and the directory I am backing up is 4,281mb
according to AmiDVD. I have succesfully written the diirectory to a single layer
DVD-R disc, but it fails when I try to write it to a dual layer disc.

The dual Layer is is 8x, but AmiDVD only shows it as 4x, so I left the write speed as the
default, wheras I would normally select the nect speed down from the maximum.
There is no media id shown for the DL disc.

Anyone any idea what I am doing wrong?

Hi @Swoop

Does the DVD-RW support DL? Look at Tab-3 in the AmiDVD menu. My AOpen drive doesn't support DL.

Under drive features (tab3) it supports both reading and writing DVD+R DL.

Hi @Swoop

I have succesfully written the directory to a single layer...
I can't even do that(v1.46)! I lockup in IO at 30%. I think 8x speed is too fast, so I'll check it out at 1x.
Do you have a fixed DMA IDE/bus? I ask because mine is not and expect DMA trouble.

No fix, just a sii0680 card.
I had a lot of problems when I first installed my DVD Writer, due to the UBoot variables not being used by OS4.
In UBoot the DVDWriter was set to run in UDMA, idetool told me it was actually running in best PIO mode.
I had to put the following line in my userstartup to force UDMA mode Quote:
run >nil: c:idetool -x sii0680ide.device 2 68

Now my writer works correctly.

I don't know the exact reason for the error since it's not an official error code, it's a vendor specific error code. It's a hardware error.
Does your burner support 8x speed DVD+R DL? Only with CD-R you can use faster media than your burner supports, for example burn 52x CD-Rs even in a 4x CD burner, but for everything else that doesn't work.

Looking at the drive specs (on the Box), the burner supports DL writing at 2.4x speed.

With cd's I can use a faster media than the drive speed, is this not the same with DVD+R DL media?
Also with CD's and SL dvd's AmiDVD alows me to set the write speed, and as I said I usually reduce this to below maximum to improve write accuracy. With the DL dvd I was unable to change the write speed, AmiDVD showed it as 4x, the write media is 8x, and now after your suggestion I find the drive is only 2.4x.
Would it be possible to look at the write speed part of AmiDVD to see what happens with DL dvd's?

No, not with any DVD media and not with CD-RW either, CD-R is the only exception. Upgrading the firmware can help, there may be a new firmware version for your burner which supports 8x DVD+R DL media. Of course you wont be able to burn them in 8x speed with a new firmware, but without an updated firmware with 8x DVD+R DL support you can't use them at all.

The drive probably returns it's max. DVD write speed for media types it doesn't recognise, if you read the write speeds without a media in the drive you get the max. DVD write speed as well.

As the DVD-Writer is in an A1 there is probably no way for me to upgrade the Firmware.
Thanks for your time, I'll get some 2.4x discs and give them a try.

I have got hold of some Datawrite 8.5gb DVD+R DL 2.4 speed 240 mins discs, and I get exactly the same error as with the 8x discs.
Quote:
SCSI command 54 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 failed
sense: 70 00 04 00 00 00 00 0e 00 00 00 00 91 c1 00 00 00 00 00 c1

sense: 70 00 04 00 00 00 00 0e 00 00 00 00 91 c1 00 00 00 00 00 c1
Again I am writing the dvd on the fly, and the directory I am backing up this time is 6,532mb.
As before AmiDVD shows the disc as 4x which is not changeable, even though it is only a 2.4x disc.

I get the same error using either 8x or 2.4x discs.

Is there anything else I can try?

Hi @Swoop

Again I am writing the dvd on the fly ?

I usually go with make image. 'Flying' is not IO stable.

Since the error codes are no standard ones but vendors specific I have no idea what they mean, but obviously your drive doesn't recognise the 2.4x discs correctly either since the write speed AmiDVD gets from the drive is wrong, it's just the default/max. speed which is returned as well for example if there is no disc in the drive.

It doesn't matter with buffer underrun free recording, and the errors Swoop gets are before writing has started in a part of AmiDVD which is identical for images and on-the-fly burning.

Now my writer works correctly.

Following a thread on AW, I had problems trying to copy a DVD. I was trying to duplicate the errors reported. The copy failed twice at 91% with a read error on the source DVD(?). I reset the dma to 67 (UDMA3) on my writer and the copy worked fine.
I will now try the dual layer discs and report back.

I wonder whether this is a speed problem with the A1, or OS4 ide drivers?

I have exchanged my AOpen DVDwriter for what I was told was an OEM Sony DVDwriter, but on the label it is a Lite-On DH-20A4P06C.
It works great. I get proper notification with workbench, I can write dual layer discs no-problem, and I haven't had a coaster yet.

I have just found a link , if anyone wants any further info.
It says the drive is not available but I bought mine ages ago and have only just fitted it.
