I uploaded a test video here (can be played with MPlayer, link only allows 10 downloads):
http://rapidshare.com/files/193540089/srec-test.lha.html

0.1 version of program is available on OS4Depot.
I have just downloaded v0.3, and how do I use the Filters option. Also MPlayer cannot play the xvid format, and I have used ffmpeg to re-encode to avi. Is there a program to play xvid file natively on OS4?

I,ve just tried the latest ffmpeg/ffmpegGUI combination and selected the test file as input0 and then selected play input file 0, and voila.

MPlayer does play xvid.
What version are you using?

The new FFmpegGUI uses MPlayer to play the video.

The template for SRec 0.3 is:
WIDTH/K/N,HEIGHT/K/N,FPS/K/N,FILTER/S

The filter is a switch meaning that it's either on or off depending on whether you specify it on the commandline or not.

The next version will have aliases for some of the options to save on typing:
W=WIDTH/K/N,H=HEIGHT/K/N,FPS/K/N,F=FILTER/S

Also I will probably change it so it doesn't output to stdout by default anymore but rather to a filename specified on the commandline.

In case it is too hard to follow the link above:

Player: http://amiblitz3.amiforce.de/index.php?action=12&id=4

Movie: http://amiblitz3.amiforce.de/index.php?action=12&id=9
(explains first steps in Amiblitz3, 7min/4MB/853x682)

Any comments/suggestions on compatibelity, quality and performance of the player are appreciated, as I plan to do more tutorials.

I must admit that before following those links, I thought you were saying ScreenCam was an Amiga program.
Unfortunatley, it seems that just the player is an Amiga program, or have I got that wrong, and you are working on an Amiga version of screencam.

Maybe there is a "ScreenCam" for PC, but my "ScreenCam" is for AmigaOS.
I did not release the recorder yet, because I want to make final touches on the codec first, to avoid that there are incompatible videos out there.

On OS4, maybe it could take advantage of the composing engine, I dont know. The problem here is that reading from AGP is very slow. However, some people reported that it would be usable.
On WinUAE, there is no problem to recording high res videos, since it has a RAM buffer.

I am planning an integrated converter from scv (ScreenCamVideo) to mpeg using ffmpeg.
This would enable to put those videos to YouTube or record videos playing a game or somehting, where the current codec is not efficient.

I just need to know if you guys were able to play back the video without glitches, and if you are impressed by the quality/size of the videos, or you say "boooooring!"

Sorry for my mis-understanding. I'll pay them later today, and get back to you.

(I googled ScreenCam, and came up with a pc program, sorry)

Selecting Screenplayer gives me a zlib.library error, saying I need v3.0+.
On Os4depot there are two files, zlib.lha v1.2.3, and zlibrary.lha v50.0. Can you tell me which to use.
Thanks

You need this one:

http://aminet.net/package/util/libs/zlib-library

I heared that there exists an OS4 version, but didnt find it. I also heared that the OS4 version is buggy. So I would go for the 68k version.

OK. I also installed jpeg.library from OS4Depot, and voila.
The video plays fine. I didn't understand it but it plays fine. The player at first insisted on a desktop: volume but once I got that sussed, I chose the video file and it played fine. I increased, and decreased the player window, selected full screen, dragged the progress bar, and it continued playing correctly. It looks very stable.

It seems that there is a problem with how the frame rate is stored (maybe MPlayer doesn't like the variable frame rate?).

Forcing the frame rate with the -fps option for those files that won't play seems to fix things though:

Thanks for that I'll give it a go.

PS. O.T. Have you any instructions for your video editor.
I changed the start and end times of an flv file, but when I saved target, it saved the original file at it's original length, and not the shortened one.

I haven't written any video editor.

Maybe you mean videoeditor, which is written by Tuomas Hokka, who AFAIK is registered here with the username TSK?

The reason AFAIK why not so many programs will read the files generated by SRec is because the files are only raw xvid streams without any file header of any kind. Usually video files have a wrapper format such as f.e. avi or wmv.

If all goes well the next version should be able to write an AVI wrapper around the stream and hopefully the remaining player problems will disappear.

I have tried recording workbench, at 640x480, and I was getting strange artifacts on my video. Black squiggles around the icons and in some of the windows. I have now realised these were the drop shadows around the icons, but just shown as a thick black line. The ones in the windows, are from the workbench icons behind the winmdows. Is there anyway to improve the way SRec handles the compositing?

Note: I used 640x480 instead of the default 640x400, because my screen is 1280x1024.
To get more detail, I tried recording at 1280x1024, but my A1 locks up.

Anyway, great program. Keep up the good work.

1280x1024 is a 5:4 resolution so 640x512 would be better. 640x480 has aspect ratio 4:3 so you will have some areas to the left and right that are unused since SRec preserves the aspect ratio.

I have a widescreen monitor with a native resolution of 1680x1050 so I use 640x400 (16:10).
