AmigaGuide/Multiview questions

So, i'm trying to pretty up my AmigaGuide and am stuck when it comes to place some options inside the Guide.

First a general question:
Is it possible to display pictures beside the text (without opening an extra window), e.g. a logo on top of the text (maybe even user placable)?

All of those options are taken out of the AutoDoc amigaguide_dtc.doc

1)
@{<label> <command>}
Indicate a textual link point. Can be anywhere in a line.
Starting with 3.0, AmigaGuide can can link to graphics,
sounds, animations and other DataTypes.

I tried something simple
@{"Text" "AppDir:Multiviewer text"}
with "text" being a file in the same directory as the Guide.
Then i tried it without the AppDir part, as the description indicates that a destination file is going to be handled by datatypes, but still nothing.

What am i doing wrong?

2)
@{AMIGAGUIDE}
Displays the word AmigaGuide in bold followed by the ® symbol.
New for V40.

I have yet to find the exact place where it displays that.
I placed it inside the main node but it never comes up.

3)
The whole PEN options and Background/Foreground.
They don't seem to do anything, or maybe i haven't understand the format of those options.

What would be the exact format to e.g. use @{BPEN}?

4) @HEIGHT <chars>
How high, in characters, the largest document is.
and
@WIDTH <chars>
How wide, in characters, the largest document is.

What is meant here?
How big the font used is or how many characters are there in the doc?
Why would that be important, given we have word wrapping available?

Thank you

No, inlline display of anything is impossible, see above .

Why are you specifying an app? Unless for some reason you want to load the multiview binary in with the binary datatype

Try

@{"Text" "PATH:To:my:textfile.txt"}

Don't know, seams abit pointless any way.

Really not sure either, I would say avoid it anyway, let the use define these via the system prefs, in case they have eyesight based needs, or like pink and purple or whatever....

Perhaps to ensure a minimum window size?

As a general guideline for amigaguides, don't try and pretty it up, don't spevify fonts, don't specify colours.

Do use the dedicated colours, like text, shine etc but only sparingly. Use bold for heading perhaps.

Amigaguide is not supposed to be pretty it's supposed to be readable.

Thank you for the answers.

Because the AutoDoc is pretty scarce on information or examples, so i had to try my way through the usage.

I have now changed it to

@{"AUTHORS" Path:to/AUTHORS"}

Nothing...
I don't believe the datatypes need a suffix to work, does it?

Try @{amigaguide}
The lower case seems to work. Maybe other uppercase commands in the autodoc need to actually be lower case too.

An example amigaguide I have uses @{"Amiga" link amiga.brush/main} to display an image on a seperate page. The amiga.brush file is an IFF image file in the same directory as the example amigaguide. It doesn't work without the /main after the filename. I edited the command to link to a text file and that worked too.

@xenic

The "link" and "/main" did the trick, thanks a bunch, also it doesn't like " in it's path.
But there is no info whatsoever given about that "link" part and the "/main" part either. AutoDocs are outdated :-/

I have a request though, since i think i found a bug in Multiviewer.
If you got Multiviewer, could you check if it crashes for you too, please?

Open up your guide with Multiviewer (changed to load a text file, it should display in the same incarnation of Multiviewer the guide was openend in).

Now close Multiviewer while still displaying the external file.

It crashes for me, but not when using multiview, only with Multiviewer.

But there is no info whatsoever given about that "link" part and the "/main" part either. AutoDocs are outdated :-/

Actually no they are right, you and (and I at first) didn't read them correctly. It could certainly be clearer.

Quote:

@{<label> <command>}
Indicate a textual link point. Can be anywhere in a line.
Starting with 3.0, AmigaGuide can can link to graphics,
sounds, animations and other DataTypes.

Creates a link button in the document with the <label> as the displayed text. It executes <command> when clicked on.

command could be any of the REXX commands listed lower in the page.

eg

@{"Click me" BEEP} beeps the screen

@{"chapter two" LINK Chapter2} internal link to node chapter2

@{"external" LINK someother.guide/main} link to the main node in an external guide

@{"other" LINK someotherguide.txt/chapter3 } link to node chapter3 in an external guide

@{"crash me" QUIT} does what it says in both multiview and multiviewer :-/

et cetera et cetera....

RE your crashlog I don't see a crash here with

MultiViewer 2.19 (17/04/2019)

There were changes in the area that crashes so fingers crossed it's fixed.

Ah, cool...waiting for the release then, thanks for confirming...

Thanks also for the hints regarding the link, yes, they should add your examples, that way it would become much clearer.

I was able to confirm the Multiviewer issue you reported. Hopefully, Andy's newer version fixes the issue. I also think I found an issue that occurs in Multiviewer and Multiview. In a rush to confirm your crash, I renamed my USB log ( in T: ) as text.txt to make the test. Both Multiviewer and Multiview froze my system when I linked to that usb.log file in the AmigaGuide. It's probably a text datatype issue rather than Multiviewer or Multiview. Tommorrow I will try to determine what part of the usb.log causes the problem.

I've tracked down the source of my AmigaGuide system freeze when I use a text link to a USB log in an AmigaGuide document. It appears to be a datatype file identification problem. If you enter the followiing line in a text editor and save it as a file, when you open it with Multiview/Multiviewer it is displayed with column seperators and a converted date.

I: [09:38:49] STRANGE

If you create a text link to the file containing the above line it causes a system freeze.

@Andy
Since the above issue also occurs with Multiviewer, maybe you can determine what is causing the above issue and explain it to us.

Do you have the logfile datatype installed? It sounds like you do.

After my last post I discovered that I have the logfile datatype installed and that appears to be the problem. Also, if I load the USB log with Multiviewer then only one window of the log is displayed and there is no way to scroll down to the rest of the log file contents. However, Multiviewer displays it correctly and you can scroll down to see the entire log file. Since I can't find any documentation for a log file format that works with the logfile datatype, it seems fairly useless. Combine that with the aforementioned bugs and I think it would be wise just to remove it.

I was going to add a file pattern to the logfile datatype descriptor but there already is a file pattern in the descriptor. There is also a hook file in the descriptor which apparently overrides the file pattern.

I can confirm the crash (and what evil one that is - it first drags down other stuff before the logfile datatype burns)

Don't use logfile.datatype, together with crashes it just make scrolling of ascii files be veeery slow. Try to open ram:t/usb.log with multiviewer when logfile.datatype installed and scroll by mouse wheel.

Also i do not know what purpose of that logfile.datatype is : there is other datatypes in system which do same and well tested. And dunno who wrote it, so to make bugreports which not only will collect dust in aeon's bugzilla, but being actually fixed.

In other words, better to remove it. Asking mattew to remove it from enhancer probably will not work, so everyone should know that this one shouldn't be installed.

Not to mention Utilities/LogViewer.

You said Multviewer both times then, but I assume one of tem was meant to be Multiview...

So testing quickly myself I found that in MultiviewER all works fine, but in the original MultiView the scroll bars don't update till you nudge the size of the window, which is clearly a bug. Ironically this kind of bug more usually occurs the other way round.

@Raziel

could you remove the USB.log file from your post? It's not like we don't all have one in RAM:T/ and it's totally destroying the forume layout.

Whether you use it is a matter of personal choice, datatypes are designed this way.

Well ideally the crashes need to be fixed, but actually are unlkely to hapen in the real world as nobody links to USB.log from aguide except when testing.

Use the scroll bar or press the shift key!

No there aren't. Not that I don't agree with you in a way I find viewing logs as plain text more useful.

Really this doesn't matter. make the bug reports anyway every develeope can see them in mantis , just as in the OS bugzilla.

I added the search functionalty, but I didn't write the original datatype. I think it was Frederik actually.
