chaps,
looks like I'll go wirey then ! All I need to do FIRST is connect the A1 to the cable modem (probably) in the living room. The Kid's PC in the dining room is an afterthought - they only use it to play Scooby do on really ! I could always add wireless later, and leave the A1 on the wired bit.
@Pvanni, yes I did see that, but I guess that loads of those will now be out of production (particularly the Netgear MA311). not to mention that I currently do net shopping at work, and can't look into lha archives doesnt help ! besides it never hurts to ask other people thier mileage....!

Anyone gone wireless with OS4 on AmigaOne ? If so, which PCI card did you use, and if you're in the UK, who sold it to you (if new !)
just doin m'research - trying to decide if wireless is worth the aggro...

@agafaster
next question, and I know I should've researched this better - which PCI wireless cards work with Linux and OS4 on the A1 ? I had found in a copy of Total Amiga from 2005 that Amigakit were doing one, but can't find it in their store ! I've had a look on intuition base, but there's hardly anything there - might need updating a smidge.
as for software, I imagine I should be able to find the software from Aminet or OS4depot still, shouldnt I ?

@Outcast
well the account I'm being given is no download limit and (cos its the bog standard one) I'm assuming 2MB speed limit too. I have heard that there are still limits to the unlimited accounts that they don't tell us about, so I might have to ask specifically about that before I fall foul of it !

Engineers design & build things, while Technicians just fix & install them. Unfortunately this is a common mistake in England, and it devalues the perceived importance of real engineers
you are quite right of course, and I sit corrected. That was just how the lass on the end of the phone referred to the fellow while I was making the appointment - blame her ! probably just easier if we refer to 'em as 'the chap' - but then someone will point out that it could be a lass...! @Meega Ta ! although it isnt in yet. Update: Virgin provide a Cable modem if their chap comes round - the splitter thing was a confusion - they send one of those if you waive the 30 quid fee. The missus is after a wireless network now - I have permission to buy toys !!

@Wol
That was funny, it made me larf !
actually, they specifically stated that the guy is only there to route the cable from the cable TV box to where I want the terminal to be - they offered to send just the cable (25m worth) and a 'splitter' to do it meself and waive the 30 quid fee, but since my A1 is upstairs and along a bit (in a cartesian coordinates sense) I thought best get the guy in to discuss and route. I dont think for a minute he'll want to go on the computer !

@AmiGame and Chris, They did mention they would supply a 'splitter' - I presume this could be the usb adaptor or ethernet connection to the box - and not the Popular Front of Judea... heh - I'll probably just buy an ethernet router any hints on setting up Roadshow for security ?

I take it you mean more than just enabling the display of the Earth's shadow, as you must have that enabled to realise there would be a lunar eclipse if you did not know of it beforehand.
If you mean the shadow making the moon plot darker and eventually reddish, then this is plannned for v2.5. The Mac version does it so I should be able to get the Amiga version to do the same.
Bill.
the second one ! I did wonder what those concentric circles were, but a bit of fiddling, and the realisation that they were nearby when Mars was at opposition t'other day helped ! I reckon a neat bit of shading and colouring can be done in the umbra to get a blood red moon. I'll look forward to it however it comes though !

Why not use a sil controller?
cash basically ! @all Thanks for all the responses - no worries on the USB front, its not actually ADSL, but fibre optic into the house, as its being provided by Virgin Media, alongside Cable Telly, and the phone link. its just an Ethernet cable into the back of the set-top box, through the walls, etc to my room. I guess the answer is 'suck it and see' - I dont think a router is provided, unless thats internal to the cable box - the connection charge is for the guy to 'do the plumbing' as it were. --edit-- just a quick question - of the Brits here, who is your BB provider, and is it ADSL over phone lines, or cable over er cable ?

I thought so. might just bite the bullet and get an IDE card. can you remember the symptoms or how drastic the problem was ?

For interest - I was playing around in DU the other day, with the automated advance option in Time Contol - anyroad, the upshot of this was the discovery that there is an event happening ! for those (like me) who dont keep abreast of events as often as they'd like, there will be a Lunar Eclipse on the night of the 21/2/2008 - around 3 am !
... what would be neat is if DU could be made to simulate the moon passing through the Earth's umbra and penumbra.

Yes, I've finally convinced 'er inside the doors its worthwhile getting broadband, and I also got round to booking the Engineer to come and drill holes, and tack cables.
now - is there anything I should watch out for ? my primary machine will be the A1 - from AOS4, and debian (should I ever get that to work again).
I only ask as I seem to recall problems using the internal ethernet with the internal IDE Port - am I ok with this, or will I be better off upgrading either the ethernet, or the IDE ?
Will I need an external firewall with OS4, or is anonymity safe enough ?
Cheers all, and a Happy New Year !
