Re: ImageFX (NovaDesign) purchase problems

@xenic

If Kermit Woodall isn't saying anything, maybe DiscreetFX, who have had business dealings with Woodall, could let us know what's going on with Nova Design? Maybe DiscreetFX could purchase ImageFX, producing a OS4.x version?

@DaveP

My suggestion to send donations is to encourage Jeorg as a developer, not make up for a "rumored" breach of trust on the part of Hyperion. Whether or not Hyperion has done anything wrong, the donations to Jeorg should be much appreciated.

@Mrodfr et al,

If Jeorg has quit over money, perhaps every user of OWB who likes the product, could send a donation of say $15 to $20 to his PayPal account along with a note of gratitude and encouragement for his work on JXFS, OWB, and other great software.

If he quit over principle (that is if Hyperion really did not meet its obligations to Jeorg and Jeorg is angry over the injustice of it all), then PayPal donations and notes may not help much.

If he has not quit at all, but is quiet for some other reason, then I would still encourage OWB users to donate something to keep up his developer's morale.

A few years ago, I ordered a "Model-M" from Unicomp (Also known as the "Classic 104"). Unicomp custom made the "A" keys to replace the windows keys on my keyboard. The right "A" was even outlined like on a real Amiga keyboard.

After having read the documentation, I realized such functionality was a part of avcodec.library, not DVPlayer. That was my mistake.

Thanks for the update. Perhaps in the meantime, someone could post a tutorial on how to use 3rd party codecs with DVPlayer?

Being that it is past Spring, could you give a new estimated time for a new DVPlayer release?

Thanks,

Re: Installing JXFS

@ChrisH

I am another one of those few users of FFS. When I first received and installed OS4.1 on my A1XE, I set up my System partition to use SFS, being newer than FFS, and being bootable. I used, and am still using JXFS for my Work partition.

Fairly soon after my first installation, my SFS partition kept invalidating. It kept trying to write all new information to the exact same block. I reinstalled SFS, reformatted the partition, and reinstalled OS4.1. Again, everything tried to write to the same block, invalidating the System partition. I tried reinstalling a third time. It did the same stuff the third time. I then reformatted the partition as FFS. So, until JXFS becomes bootable, I'll be using FFS.

[Edit: My memory has gotten the better of me. As I remember, the invalidation of my SFS was due to faulty memory. I still use FFS "just in case" it wasn't just the RAM being at fault.]

My big question is, "When will SLB be updated to allow JXFS to boot?" (I know, "When its done!")

@diamond

Pick up the best manual, Sheldon Leeman's AmigaDOS Reference Guide covering 3.0. For OS4.x related AmigaDOS stuff, check the documentation drawer on your SYS: partition.

For ARexx, I'd recommend a book called Amiga Intern. It is not ARexx specific, covering the internals of the A3000, 2.04 Libraries, etc.; however, the ARexx coverage in the book is more extensive than the manuals Commodore wrote.

@murasame

If a conversion megarray board could be made into which you could fit the accelerator, you would still have the problem of the lack of dual PPC CPU support in OS4.1, MOS, AROS, etc.

Re: Partition Wizard

@Swoop

I had a similar problem with SFS on my AmigaOne. When I first installed OS4.1, I used SFS on my System partition. It kept invalidating, trying to write different data to the same block. I reinstalled OS4.1, repartitioning my hard drive, all according to the manual. SFS still invalidated, trying to write all data to one block whenever I tried to save anything. When I switched back to FFS, the problem dissapeared for a while. It invalidated, but did so less often and did not try to write everything to the same block. I found this SFS behavior strange, because I thought SFS was supposed to be more stable, and less prone to invalidation.

My guess is as good as yours, but I would suspect faulty RAM. After, I had switched back to FFS, I ran memtester to check on another problem. I had faulty memory. I bought some new memory, successfully running memtester on it. I reinstalled OS4.1 again using FFS for my System partition. I have not had any HD problems since. My advice to you is to run memtester.

@MamePPCA1

The mounting holes on the AmigaOne CPU module are the same as mounting holes on VGA cards and some Northbridge mounting holes. In other words, the Zalman VF900 will mount on either a VGA graphics card, or an AmigaOne CPU module without much effort. The people you talked to in the shops did not know anything about how to mount coolers on the AmigaOne CPU.

@MamePPCA1

You may purchase the VF900. It is a good all-in-one cooler.

The closest store to Spain stocking Zalman products is Bacata in France.

Wave in Germany also stocks Zalman products.

There are plenty of links for places to shop at Zalman...

@MamePPCA1

I only suggested underclocking as a diagnostic. Most on this forum, including myself, suspect that your system is overheating. After all, you are reaching temperatures over 80 degrees. After checking Intuitionbase, I realized that there are no settings given for underclocking or overclocking the G3 CPU modules. In other words, ignore everything I said about underclocking as a diagnostic. I have misled you. I give you my apologies. Oops.

Go ahead and get yourself a cooling fan/heatsink.

@interrogative

The mounting for the CPU modules, whether G3 or G4, should be that of a Northbridge/VGA mounting system. In other words, any of the coolers I listed on AW should work with your system. I bought a Zalman FB123, along with a 92mm fan, a Zalman NBF47, and an extra 80mm case fan from ZipZoomFly.com. It ended up being around $20 US. You may do a Google search for either online shops, or local places to purchase the Zalman items.

The mounting pegs for the NBF47 are adjustable (I used my old A1CPU cooling fan/heatsink as a template for adjusting the pegs). The pegs just snap into place on the CPU card. The NBF47 comes with its own thermal grease (some prefer artic silver paste, but Zalman recommends the thermal grease that comes with the heatsink).

Mounting the fan bracket is the easy part. It mounts on either the HDD cage, or the PCI card bracket area. The fans may be run in two modes, silent and fast. Even the fast setting runs quieter than the original A1XE CPU fan.

One more thought... before purchasing a new cooling solution, try underclocking your CPU. If the freezing/craching persists, it possibly could be another problem.

@MamePPCA1

Good day,

I have put together an extensive list of heatsinks/fans for the AmigaOne XE over on Amigaworld.net.

http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/v ... _id=28453&forum=33#483810

I personnally use the solution of a Zalman fan bracket with a passive heatsink on the CPU. It keeps a 7451 very cool even at 866MHz!

@McDonald

Good day McDonald,

Since you said you were also new to programming, I thought I'd recommend the basics...

1) Kernigan, Brian and Dennis Ritchie, The C Programming Language

2) Kochan, Stephen, Programming in C (the book I am using to learn C on AmigaOS4)

and for advanced Amiga programming...

1) Amiga Developer CD v2.1 (older but most up-to date ROM Kernel Reference Manuals)

2) Amiga Style Guide (great reference for any programmer of any OS for building easy to use interfaces).

Re: AmigaOS 4.0 Zip

@Ant

I would like to know the same thing. Since upgrading to OS4.1, I have not been able to read either FAT or FFS formatted ZIP100 disks. Yes, I have checked the unit number. The unit number matches the unit of my Zip drive. At first, I thought it was CROSSDOS; however, I could not read my Amiga formatted ZIPs either. Since they read fine under OS4final, I compared the mountlists from OS4final and OS4.1 only to find no change. My ZIP100 disks mount fine under Ubuntu 9.04, proving the disks themselves are not bad.

Any help you could give Ant and I would be appreciated.

I was just about to start a thread asking, "what's up with ImageFX 4.5 installation on 4.1?" Does anyone know if Kermit is updating ImageFX beyond the full 68k version and the PPC demo on 0S4depot? (Yes, I know the best way is to ask Kermit myself over e-mail)

Re: How do i use fat95 instead of CrossDOS for USB-Harddrives/-Sticks?

@tonyw & @ZeroG

I recently needed to mount a Fat32 formatted HD to my AmigaOneXE. CrossDOS did not handle the long file names on the HD; thus, I downloaded giggledisk and fat95 from Aminet to experiment. Both worked fine. If there is a way to enable long file names in CrossDOS, let me know. I'd also like a working fat32 Zip drive mountlist (Zip100s formatted under Windows98 do not seem to appear with the current set of mountlists in DOSDrivers).

Side note: Did Gateway, Amino, Amiga Inc., or Hyperion buy the rights for CrossDOS from Consultron. If I understand, Hyperion has been updating the code (bug fixing, making PPC native, etc.).
