Re: AmigaOS 4.1 update 2 usability requests
Just popping in
Just popping in

IMO some minor things have to be changed in the forthcoming update (be it 4.1.2 or 4.2).

First of, Amiupdate should be fully integrated to the system, period. And an option of enabling / disabling should be provided after initial setup, in case an expert user would like to disable it. I cannot understand why Amiupdate is not even on the contribution list, can somebody explain this?

Secondly, OWB must implement a download manager, asap! Also, I would like to add some mouse gestures from Opera if possible (e.g holding down right button and pressing once the left button, browser directs you back).

Dock, well should said it already, auto hide etc!

Gnash, I hope it will be ready!

Implement some nice apps from OS4depot as default behavior. e.g. that tiny utility that iconfies the drawers in fading mode when pressing the left shift, its very smooth!

I hope Filer will have most of Dopus functionalities (dual lister, drag and drop etc) and will be part of the system.

Make a Dark Theme available!

Anyway, I believe that most tweaks regarding usability will come along with an expanded version of contribution list with polished and finalized products.

Also, please, come in contact with authors of great software (e.g Hollywood) and release a demo of let's say 30 Days, included in the contribution list too.

MP is important for me because many times an app crashes and puts on halt the whole system.

And on x86... since this (odd) behavior is the default one on all versions of Directory Opus for Windows. This is the first thing I should edit on Dopus preferences whenever I have to install it from scratch.

@orgin

Hello and sorry to bother you. I have tried Filer on my SamEp667Mhz with OS4.1. I was impressed! I do realize that it still has a long way to go but it seems that it becomes more and more mature.

I have a problem regarding performance though. When I am trying to resize the window, I can see a gray scale image from the right bottom of the window to be resized together with the window of Filer.

Any ideas?

Thanks and best regards,

bear in mind that os4 supports distributed compiling.. so you could get a very big boost using two sams. thank ssolie for that. :)

I am sorry, but I am no fond at all to what exactly distrubuted compiling means... Do you imply that if connect two OS4 machines (eg two SAMs) I can use their sum Mhz, or RAM when using the system (e.g playing some games, browsing the internet etc)?

@Mrodfr

Hello my friend. We have the same appreciation regarding AmiCygnix. It is a BRILLIANT package for our OS. But for us, SAM owners, is almost unusable. I only hope we get a lot faster hardware some day so we can make use of it. Until then, we will just have a slight idea of what AmiCygix is really capable of..

So way beyond some new API, I think what the Amiga platform needs is to find a focus. The thing that Amiga has lost was its special capablities --graphics/genlock that made it unique to any computer at the time. What makes the Amiga special now that can pave the way to solve a need? What is already there that could be 10-fold improved and done on the Amiga 4.X in the best way possible?

How about a DVR for all the "free" TV content on the internet
and over the air antenna (non-service contract). There is probably some products like this but I haven't seen a solution where I can just plug it in and be able to work on my TV *easily*. Sony had a sort of DVR that was non-service contract that downloaded the program guide from the antenna -- and that was used for the DVR)..extend this to hulu / other sites for on-demand content...in an interface that is easy to find the content you want to watch/record for later...

Maybe not the best idea...but there is surely something...

Yes, my thoughts exactly. No matter how hard the current OS4.x Devs and Programmers work the Amiga OS4.x will always be in the shadows because the desktop-ppc and the amiga fans do not really sustain a fruitful and profitable market for any company, including Hyperion. Building a new shared API will eventually help the current devs and users of all Amiga Flavors and OS4.x team but won't bring any new potential user-customers.

OS4.x has to re-establish itself on the market. Hyperion must choose carefully an area where OS4.x might have a chance and try to invest there, apparently the ppc dektop and the dektop market in general is very a very difficult and demanding market to infiltrate. OS4.x is over 6 years old now (?) and the result of the sales sure are somewhat pessimistic, specially when placed in contrary with OS3.5 10 years ago.

@Rigo

I am not trying to deliberetaly start a new flame thread or hijack the current. If you may have noticed I almost never participate in these discussions which are quite famous on aw.net. I am just trying to answer the title of the thread "An open discussion on where we go from here". And imho I see OS4.x tied on a hardware desktop platform which has no room for rapid development (ppc obsolete/amiga fans too few).

OS4.x must reach a wider audience. Forget about us for a moment. See what peaople are using more. PDAs? Then do a PDA version. Mobiles? Then so, be it. Consoles? etc. In this way, Hyperion might raise profit and then strafe again towards desktop version of OS4.x with more and better PR, Business Cooperations and Money in its pockets. Hyperion must not please its current user group (porting to another ppc device, or x86 which is utterly silly since OS4.x will get lost in the vast variety of OSes and will be in the shadow of MS, Linux and Mac) but try to make some money in more specific areas of interest.

OK, I told and stated as much clearly what I wanted to tell. If anybody thinks that my answer might raise any flame war please then either ignore it or a webmaster can erase my message. But anyway, I would really want to discuss in a clam and civil way which hardware/customer target group should OS4.x be targeted.

I'm not sure where you are going with this, but Hyperion is not a huge company with a bottomless pit of money burning a hole in their pockets.

As with other platforms, applications are generally developed by third parties, and it is their domain to make the decisions required to bring those products to market. Hyperion are currently involved in a full time endeavour with the Operating System itself.

The latest quickfixes show that work is still ongoing, and indeed more work is needed judging by the mixed reaction to those quickfixes.

Some of the OS4 developers are also working on applications, but to have Hyperion tie themselves up with application development would inevitable stall the OS for that duration.

Simon

Yes, of course I understand and accept all the above you mentioned.

What I would really wanted to tell is that if/when Hyperion makes a contract or business cooperation with a large company on let's say.. the mobile indrustry then OS4.x will become widely know. Other companies will look at it (4.x) from a different point of view then. Imagine OS4.x on Nokia for example. Or OS4.x at PS3, XBOX, Wii etc. I am not talking for porting for the sake of porting. I don't even have these systems to run OS4.x. But think the benefit for Hyperion. They will place themselves in the map of serious OS developers more crearly. The more Hyperion earns money, sales etc then OS4.x will expand more and more, faster and faster. IMHO -always- what Hyperion (and OS4.x) really needs is a cooperation with a company that has deep pockets.

Until now, unfortunately I do not see OS4.x running on anything else than a few old A1, PegII and the new SAM but here we are talking for a underpowered and expensive machine that is targeted for a specific industry. We, amigans, don't care so much about cost/perfomance ratio. But the middle user outside of our community will. But OS4.x on a powerfull machine would show its true power. This machine hasn't has to be desktop unit. Make OS4.x run on some product (hardware) alreay know and used widely. Then you will have more potential customers for the desktop version of your OS.

What do you think?

@DaveP

Hello my friend.

I have been an amiga user since my childhood. There are some problems regarding OS4.x that imho prohibit many users from actually using it. First, as you have stated it's the hardware. Expensive and low perfomance. But let's suppose for instance that SAM was a very - very cheap machine. Let's say that you could get a compete machine (case, psu, hd, etc.) for 300 euros, including vat, shipping cost and a copy of OS4.x.

So now we have solved the problem of hardware, in a way. What about software? A middle user wants some certain things to work straight out of the box. Will his internet experience be at least equal like on every other system? What about a complete office suite? Games?Will apps like AmiCygnix be fast and responsive?

So, imho the main problem is the severe lack of well know apps which will cost at the presentation of OS4.x to a new user in adittion to the lack of high perfomance machine.

Will you say to him that: Hey, there is a fine spreadsheet of 1997 to use? Imagine the look in his eyes. Or: Wait, OWB is moving fast you will have a capable browser of doing this and that in 20xx. Also when he will use apps like Amicygnix or Mame or some SDL app that is either badly written or needs more cpu horsepower to be executed he will see a system crawling and not the fast experencie you have promised him.

I am not saying that the current programmers of OS4.x have done a bad job here. I am telling that we need more of them or a miracle from Hyperion so the platform moves from the hobbish/amiga user target group to a wide variety of users. Only when some major companies see AOS4.x as a system where they can develop and use certain apps for their benefit, we will benefit too. If not, then AOS will conitnue to evovle but in a very slow way like we have now.

Any programm ported to AmiCygnix will be usefull! IMO, AmiCygnix must be included as part of the OS together with Abiword and Gimp.

Fast, fast, fast! Between three months there was a HUGE progress on OWB and that thanks to joerg! The only thing missing is "downloading" options. Once it has this, then it can be proclaimed the true king of all amiga browsers!

@xenic

Νο, the problem isn't the synchronisation of monitors. Mine that didn't work was the last and most expensive from the Samsung Synmaster LCD/TV series of 4:3 (not widescreen monitor). That monitor had an auto-synchronisation but the problem continued.

I told about it at ACube and they offered to send me a VGA cable that I was supposed to substitute with my previous one that came with the monitor. But still, they weren't sure that this cable would correct the problem. They are working on it. Anyway, I passed the offer because by the time they answered me I bough I new monitor with DVI input.

ΙΜΗΟ Atheist made a very good point here!

The amigans that are using OS4.x have already a Sam, a A1 or a PegII. If you want to *force* them buy something new then you have to built something better. Especially the CPU speed is crucial.

SAM is a different story since it was the first hardware ever released after long years of waiting and followed the first batch of the A1. So, people, like me, bought it although they knew it is expensive and somewhat underpowered.

Yes, I know, your system is supposed to be half price of the SAM, but still, I allready have a SAM, why should I buy again something new which wont give much better results when using OS 4.1 ?

Anyway, in the other thread you started at aw.net the poll gives you a result of 105 YES, 67 NO and 72 Pancakes by now. But if I was in your position I wouldn't rely on an internet poll to manufacture new hardware.

Listen to the market: Built something better (faster) and sell it a the double price of what you are asking right now (227+227=454 or even more, let's say 500).
