Software News

Dieter Gropp? has updated Master Control Program (called MCP) which enhances your operating system with many new features and patches and it's able to replace almost all of those single-function utilities out there.

Some highlights taken from MCP's guide:

? MultiMediaKey support for OS4
? Moving & Sizing of solid windows (Fully SystemConform)
? CrunchPatch (Let programs load crunched files!)
? MouseAccelerator
? Expanding Assign/Mount Requester
? Automatic Screen Activation
? Requester Timeout
? Exchange AppIcons
? WBTitle-Clock
? CacheFont
? Assign-Manager
? ReqToolsPatch
? MousePointer-Blanker
? new Workbench-Titlebar
? ToolAlias (changing the Default Tool in the icons)
? Drive NoClick
? Screenblanker
? NoGuru (Prevents some resets)
? DOS star (* instead of #?)
? Hotkeys
? Screen- and windowmenus
? virtuel Icons for write disabled media like CDs
? quick view of system states p.e. with an appicon
? logging of system states or values

and more...

Recent changes of MCP 1.46 executable. 19-Dec-2006:

- FIXED Windowsmenu will crash, if the menu leave without any selection was made, when option "activate" was setted.

- OVERW Overwork the Function "CheckTasknamepattern", used from crunchpatch and Examine. Also many optimations, e.g. no internal subfunction - call to mcpsupport2.library but direct call now.

- IMPRO NoGuruSave: A Default-Path/Filename is used, if the Keyword "FILENAME=" not found or no argument behind it. If only dir setted, the default filename will be added.

- FIXED NOGuru-Save: If Filerequester canceled, leaving without saving anything now.

- IMPRO Logbook: If no Filename given, "RAM:MCPlogbook.log" should now used.

- FIXED Screenblanker: Randowmize will not use the correct line in some cases.

- ADDED Windowsmenu: new option to set the menu not on windowsposition but on top of screen. Default is on (try to go to windowsposition like before).

- ADDED WindowMenu: Add an option to activate the Window now also, not only bring it to front.

- FIXED Assignwedge: Assign-Filerequester handle the Buffer in other way, this remove some problems from KingCon.

- IMPRO Noguru-save: by already existing file append the new file now. This means also, correct Seperatorline between 2 Gurus are added.

- FIXED Noguru-save have not cut the Filename any call, if set a filerequester (option "Ask for Filename" aktiv). Also the Path was loosed.

- OVERW Timerevents like Screenblanker or Dimmer started by Hotkey now starting by release instead pressing a key.

- FIXED Snapping Line causes Crash because the readed Text was written in wrong Memory. The pointer to this was never correct, so i do not know, how it may have worked anytime ?

- IMPRO Assignwedge: Assign was not startet at the CurrentDirectory. This is Changed now.

- FIXED ReqtoolsPatch: ASL to RT have destroyed Register a5 if no TAGS given. So if any Tool which hope this register is not destroyed may crash.

- OVERW change the internal release/pressed-Flag in hotkeystructure to save space for later use.

- OVERW Pointerblanker now blank by pressing, not release a Key. Also all Keys (like Shift,Alt..) may blank yet.

- ADDED Mulitmediakeys on OS4 do the correct things now fro pointerblanker, Screenblanker and Screendimmer.

- ADDED Multimediakey-supported for OS4.

 Re: Master Control Program 1.46
to OS4 users:

this thing is known for breaking stuff so if you have instability problems or stuff all of a sudden stopped working, please remove mcp and try again...before you do crashlogs or need help with some problems.

other than that, very nice to see this tool is still developed further, i thought it was dead ages ago.

cheers

MCP's features can be divided into two types. Those with patches and those without them (which are called commodities and should be safe to use). If you experience any problems, I would disable all the patches first.

It seems to me that just about everything in that list is already implemented properly in OS4. I wouldn't recommend that people install it on an OS4 system unless they have a complete debugging setup and are able to localise and identify problems.

This was my favourite multi-purpose patch under 3.x. I always found it quite stable (especially when compared to MCX).

But as Tony says - not much there that we don't have properly under OS4.

 Re: Master Control Program 1.46
I wonder if the multimedia key support is similar or on par with the allkeys effort?

Perhaps in next release it can add a patch for proper file listers, ala opus magellan. I'd install it in a nanosecond :o)
