Amiga Events : MUI 5.0-2016R1 for AmigaOS4/PPC and AmigaOS3/m68k released

Amiga Events

The MUI for AmigaOS development team is proud to announce the immediate release of version 5.0-2016R1 of the Magic User Interface for AmigaOS4/PPC and AmigaOS3/m68k. Please find the release archives in our download section.

Like all former releases a keyfile is required to enable all available settings. Old keyfiles from MUI 3.8 can be used without any restriction.

Please note that MUI5 for AmigaOS3/m68k is definitely targeted at powerful systems with a fast CPU and a fast graphic board. Although it is still possible to run this release on a real 68k machine an emulation like WinUAE is very highly recommended. Also colormapped screens with 256 colors at most are still supported, but MUI5 makes heavy use of fancy truecolor images and effects which cannot be provided on colormapped screens with the full range of possibilities.

These are the most important new features of MUI5:

- inline editing in List objects
- built-in hooks for multicolumn lists
- built-in handling of sortable list columns
- support for fixed (initial) width list columns
- new Textdata class to support UTF8 encoded text (via codesets.library)
- new reordering methods for Group and Family class

 MUI5
Why has the major version number been increased (from 4 to 5)? It doesn't sound like a major update, although I'm happy to be corrected if I'm mistaken :-)

 Re: MUI5
Because it's an incremental release, from now on new features will be gradually added (along with the usual bugfixes)

 Re: MUI5
@ChrisH

Apparently it's because MorphOS MUI is now v5.
http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=71354

I have no idea whether AOS-MUI v5 contains any of the new MOS-MUI v5 features.

The whole thing would be improved by our already stretched resources working together. There's, what, three different versions of MUI in development? (MOS-MUI, AOS-MUI and AROS-Zune). If one of those could be the standard and built for all platforms, then that frees up a lot of developers to work on more important things. For AROS it would need to be open source, which might be a bit of a sticking point.

But I suspect the motive is that keeping control of MUI stops MorphOS software being ported to OS4/AROS, so it will never happen. You could also argue that OS4 does the same thing with the Reaction classes.

 Re: MUI5
@Chris
What a horrible thread. Guess that site hasn't gotten any more OS4-friendly than the first (and last) time I visited it. Seems that Trevor buying it hasn't changed things.

Not a clue why someone feels that recreating functionality (for source code compatibility) is "p*ss*ng" on anyone, especially when it's based upon source code that (AFAIK) was officially OKed by the original author/owner. Kinda ruins any hope for official cooperation between MOS & OS4 camps, if people are still looking for a fight a DECADE after it stopped mattering (and news flash: Both sides lost the red vs blue, and while they were fighting, Windows, Android & Linux won).

@ChrisH

please report any posts you think are objectionable. i'm not always around, so i need users to let me and the other mods know when things are getting out of hand. i would very much like to see a return of AOS4 users to a.org. i think you'll find it's much better than it was.

 Re: MUI5
Ugh, I've avoided a.org for many years now, and looking at that thread it'll probably be another few years before I bother checking it again. Perhaps it has improved, but that thread shows there's still a long way to go. And that's from a regular MorphOS user.
