I've tried both lpr and network.device with no luck.

I'm using here an old HP Lasertjet2300n without problem:

Printer prefs:
-HPLaserjet4 (driver)
-Always init printer ON
-Port device: LPR.DEVICE
-Unit: 0

Created in ENVARC: 'lpr.device' (plain text file) with following data (1 line):
HOST=192.168.1.230 RAW

The IP address is the one of the printer (I set it to manula IP settings)
lpr.device V44.6 (14-02-2006) from os4depot

I have a HP Laserjet 1320n on my LAN setup.
I also tried a HP Laserjet 5L.

Both printers "worked" with lpr.device and netprinter.device (which adds a nice interface but features the same functionality as lpr.device unfortunately).
When it comes to sending and printing simple texts all is fine.

You'll get into problems when you try to print big data with embedded graphics or really huge (5 pages or higher) .pdfs.
When the data sent to the printer really "takes time" to be finished.
For me it will start throwing errors because netiher lpr.device nor netprinter.device can cope with feedback (error?) messages that are received from the printer.
They'll simply error and crash.

Sometimes (especially with those big data prints) i wonder if the printer isn't simply sending a "I'm still receiving the data, bear with me, not timed out yet" and lpr.device/netprinter.device crashes because they wouldn't know how to react to it.

I'd like to have a new or updated device that can work out the feedback from the printer instead of simply failing.
I wouldn't need any high class GUI, just a simply device that work with modern standards.

iirc terminilis said that gutenprint might not fix those behaviour because it works as something before the device? I may be wrong though

Sorry i only just realized that you got the same range of printer i have.

Here's what i did.
1) Installed netprinter.device from Aminet.net
2) Set the printer prefs to
Printer driver : Postscript
Always Init printer: Checked
Port device: netprinter.device
3) Set the netprinter prefs to
Unit 0
Hostname or IP: The IP to your printer
Protocol: LPR
Spool Type: Disk
Spool Directory: Your Spool dir

The Spool type does not change very much, i had it on memory too, still crashing on big data.

Maybe crashes are due to low ram on your printer (mine has 96MB) ¿:-/

Did you try with RAW protocol instead of LPR?

5. What configuration options should you choose?

   - Considerable overhead

   - Entire data to be printed must be spooled



   Raw socket protocol:



   + Low overhead

   + No spooling necessary

   + No authentication/authorization necessary

   - No security

   - Not supported by all printers



If your Amiga is attached to a printer or print server that supports the raw

protocol, you should use it. It is the most efficient way to move data to the

printer. Typically, all Hewlett-Packard "JetDirect" cards will support the raw

protocol. Printing will start as soon as the printer has enough data to

process.



If your printer or print server does not support the raw protocol, you should

choose the LPR protocol and think carefully about how you want the data to be

spooled. You can either choose to keep the data in a file or you can try to

buffer all the data in memory. Putting the data into a file is slower than

buffering it in memory, but then you might have more disk space to spare than

your system has memory installed. Note that if your disk fills up (if you

choose to spool the data to a file) or you run out of memory (if you choose to

buffer all the data in memory), printing will eventually be aborted. Unlike

the raw protocol, printing using the LPR protocol will not start until all the

data to be printed has been sent.



The "lpr.device" also has a problem in LPR protocol mode: once the data is

being printed, you must wait for the print job to finish. You cannot reopen

"lpr.device" and send more data until the LPR print job has been processed.

Yes i have, RAW does completely the same as lpr.

And it can't be the RAM on my printer, at least i doubt it, i have 144MB installed

As I understand it the HP Color LaserJet 2600n is a host-based Printer, which means each page must be rendered on the "host" computer and then send to the printer.

I don't think this is supported on Amiga.

No it's a separate program which merely adds the appropriate header for the 2600n to a postscript file. It could be used as a nasty hack now. Or someone with access to the postscript driver source could make the needed changes.

oops looked closer does a little more than that. It converts PNM to ZJ stream, even still it could be used as the base for a native driver.
