Or, maybe people trying such ports should use the OpenGL-ES branch of Irrlicht as a starting point.

OpenGL ES 1.0 is based on OpenGL 1.x, which means no shaders; just like MiniGL. Using the ES branch may (or may not) be an easier starting point. It depends on what the technical challenges are (i.e., which parts are causing difficulty with the port).
