It can be one search patterns in deficons preferences, its tricky because it's hard to know what rules that pick up your fie first, so your file type might be where well correct configured. if the prefs file is messed up it might be only way to solve problem is to restore prefs file from the installation CD.

hmm thanks for pointing me in the right directio guys...so the def_ascii file is pointing to multiviewer so that's not the issue........for now just going to each affected file and changing Icon info to open with multiviewer and see how that goes moving forward
update: just extracted a few downloaded files and all txt based files have the RunInUAE icon and open up to DosBox???
Don't touch that .xml file. It has nothing to do with your problem, just as Liveforit pointed out.
What you want to do is totake a closer look at def_ascii (f.e.) Mark it, right-click and open Information, TAB "Icon" and see what is written there in "Default tool" (probably pointing to runinuae in some form).
If there is anything with RuninUAE, change it back to Multiview, Noptepad or whatever.
Save, reboot, check your affected files and see which one still has the problem.
Then mark one of those files, right-click and open Information You will see the type displayed on the left side above the icon image (ascii, readme, project, tool etc.)
If you find another affected file, remember it's type (i.e. readme) and go back to SYS:Prefs/env-archive/sys and find the corresponding default file (i.e. def_readme), change it back to what you like as written above and you should be good.
ah ok so I think I'm getting somewhere...seems the culprit was def_msdos.info file as when I changed it to start up with multiviewer and not RunInDOSBox and rebooted my X1000 now all txt files open up with multiviewer again.....only thing is I still see the RunInDOSBOx icon on all txt files
Heh, Runin*DOSBOX*? My eyes are really getting worse, i read RuninUAE from the start :-/
RuninDosBox seems to add some stuff and change something too while installing. (i.e. the def_msdos icon, which i don't have)
I haven't checked the install script, but your best bet would be to look in your user-startup if there is some kind of patch installed and remove it (temporarily) to see if your issues go away.
I use DosBox only with loading it up and choosing the app i want from within.
While i don't know RuninDosBox, i'd say RuninUAE is not so intrusive to the system...(i guess that was the reason why i deinstalled it again waaaaaaay back, iirc)
ya that happens to me too sometimes checked my user-startup & nothing there for RunInDOSBox....never had anyissue with RunInUAE so guess it was RunInDOSBox installation that caused some havoc
well I finally got this sorted out after contacting ChrisH and followed the advice below:
"1. If you don't mind RunInDOSBox not working anymore, then you can simply try deleting this file (or just renaming e.g. end it in _DISABLED) :
Sys:Prefs/Env-Archive/Sys/def_msdos.info
Wait a few seconds for changes to be saved to disk, and then restart the computer."
[b]This worked but now my Ram icon disappeared from my Workbench ???[/b
I can see it in DOpus to use it but well ya know...
and since I'm here I get an AmigaDOSpopup telling me to assign my System in any drive??? I just assign it to my system folder and all good but how can I get this popup to stop popping up again? ...know I've dealt with this before easily but I'm too tired or lazy to think that hard now
