Re: Source code of Timberwolf ?

@vox,

That statement you quoted was from November of 2012, not some time in 2013, so the end of the year is now almost 9 months ago.

Still, I think it was a bit wrong of Samo79 to word his original message the way he did, implying that nothing is being done, when he was part of a discussion about progress less than 9 months ago.

We all wish that we had faster software and OS development in the world of Amiga (and Amiga-Like) systems, but we all also know that resources are very limited and the practicality of faster development does not exist at this point in time.

I don't believe that threads like this one are helpful in any way, and only distract and de-motivate the persons involved in creating, and working on any Amiga software projects.

Samo79, I believe you owe the Timberwolf author(s) an apology for starting this thread the way in which you did.

Personally, I hope his health has completely recovered, and that he no longer has any limitations on the amount of time he can spend using a computer, and writing code that will be a benefit to myself, and all other AmigaOS4.x users.

All of that being said, one of my chief complaints against Hyperion, is their bad choices made in choosing how, what, and when to make announcements, and their general bad communication skills with the AmigaOS4.x users. We as users have equal blame in our communications toward Hyperion, and the developers they employ, which is partly why there is such a low quantity of communications from Hyperion to all of us, but being in the position that Hyperion has accepted by continuing AmigaOS development, they must also accept a certain amount of criticism from the users and grow thick skins to avoid the worst parts of the complaints that may be unwarranted.

To Hyperion staff & developers, please take my comments as constructive criticism, as my hope is for better communication between yourselves and the users in the future, and not simply to be one more source of negative feedback. My hope is for a better future and success in all you do, as I would much better like to use an Amiga-Like system for all of my computing needs in the future, than depend on any Windows, Mac, Linux system, for certain tasks that are difficult, or impossible currently on AmigaOS4.x.

As someone who also struggles with health problems that affect how much time I can use a computer, I hope you are feeling better and have no more limitations on the amount of time you can do your coding work.

Take care, and get well soon, if you are not already back to 100%.

These LinuxOS4 parasites do not appear to be anywhere close to offering anything new.

Given the way our community spoke of Barry Altman (Robertos' personal friend) I would not be surprised if Roberto went out of his way to damage the Amiga community.

Revenge as they say is a dish best served cold...

The longer this (possible farce) goes on and the more times Roberto changes his plans and his tune, the more likely I think this whole charade is just a sick joke to poke and disturb/disrupt the Amiga community, by a friend of Barry Altman who is well aware of the past problems between many Amiga users and their views about CUSA and Barry.

I would like to hope that some new programming blood could enter the Amiga community and we might be able to get some new drivers written for AmigaOS4.x/AROS/AEROS/MorphOS3.2, but I am highly skeptical of anything like that happening now from the OS4 Linux guys with no previous experience at Amiga coding.

I hope this is not some sick revenge plot of Roberto's, but only time will prove that to be true or false.

2012 AmiWest Show reminder - Who's Coming?

Just wondering how many members from here will be attending the 2012 AmiWest Show next month?

Also, how many members will be also attending the first two day Programming Seminar for OS4.x on Thursday and Friday before the AmiWest Show begins?

I am signed up for both and looking forward to being there and seeing many friends again, but I am also hoping to meet many new people there, so I hope more people will show up this year and take advantage of this opportunity to participate in the Programming Seminar and the Show.

See you in a few weeks in Sacramento, CA.

Are you sure you got this part right? You are not supposed to unpack or copy the SDK to devkits: As I wrote in the Hyperion forum, you have to unpack it into the "contributions/os4-sdk/" directory in the path where you extracted the add-on (envcpp50.lha). The correct process would be:

- extract the envcpp50.lha into a temporary directory; let's say RAM:
- extract the SDK to "RAM:envcpp50/contributions/os4-sdk/"
- then run the envcpp50 installer

And yes, the article mentions SDK 53.15 because it was written at that time. The newest version is 53.20 of course, as Gazelle says.

I have the SDk extracted to "vol:envcpp50/contributions/os4-sdk", but the envcpp50 installer stops with an error saying I need to copy the SDK to that dir.

I sent a request to Dietmar asking him to create a new installer script that would make all of this alternative installation methods unnecessary on OS4.1.5 computers, but I doubt he will do that as he does not support installations of Cubic IDE with other SDK's.

Cubic IDE + OS4.x SDK
Just popping in
Just popping in

With the help of Trixie, who posted replies to my cry for help over at the Hyperion Support Forums, and at the AW.net forums, plus reading his article posted here on Amigans.net, I was finally able (after many hours of frustration) to get my Cubic IDE set up to use the latest AmigaOS4.x SDK version 53.15.

The big problem in doing this kind of installation is the installer that was written for the Cubic IDE will only work with a specific version of the OS4.x SDK (version 51.22), and that version is no longer available for download from the Hyperion website.

Luckily for me, another OS4.x user had this older version still on one of his hard drives and was kind enough to make it possible for me to download the old SDK. I am not going to mention his name, just in case he doesn't want it commonly known, but I have already thanked him for his help. You know who you are, so feel free to identify yourself in this thread if you like.

Being a complete Noob to OS4.x, everything is harder for me to do and find out, than it is for you experienced OS4.x users. I almost feel like I am starting over with my A1000 and it is 1987 again. This probably explains part of why it took me well over 8 hours, during the course of three days, before I could finally claim success and see a working installation of Cubic IDE which is using the latest version 53.15, of the OS4.x SDK, on my X1000 computer.

I wish I could provide the exact step-by-step instructions that are needed to supplement Trixie's excellent article here, but unfortunately, I had so many problems and interruptions during the several installation attempts, I cannot remember the exact combination of steps that were in addition to Trixie's instructions, which made my installation complete. The one thing I do remember which prevented one of my attempts to install Cubic IDE, and that is this:

When you unpack the version 51.22 OS4.x SDK and copy the contents to the devkits:blah/blah/blah drawer in your attempt to get the Cubic IDE installer to install the C/C++ add-on module, the drawer you are copying all the SDK contents into must be empty before you start. If you have the contents plus the archived files in that drawer, the installation will not work.

I don't know if that will help anyone, or if anyone besides me is still interested in using the Cubic IDE, but since it is still for sale (at a greatly reduced price from when I bought it), I figured that there might be someone now, or in the future who buys and tries to use the Cubic IDE who will run into the same problems I had. It would be even better if the author of this commercial IDE would write a new installer program for it that would work with the latest OS4.x SDK and include a download link to this new installer to every new buyer of this product on the Cubic IDE website.

Sorry for the long post.

So far I count two people who have (rather excitedly) let us know that their machines have arrived. While it's nice to hear their first impressions, I would have expected that more would have arrived by now.

So, new A1-X1000 owners, please drop by and say hi in this thread. And, if you're not too busy playing with your new toy, some first impressions, photos, or more, would be appreciated.

Hans

P.S. You can skip the benchmarks; I've already seen them, and am bored of those.

I just received my X1000 around Noon today, Feb. 16th, which is 13 days earlier than I had guessed I would be getting it when I made a prediction several weeks ago.

Getting it is the good news! FedEX is the BAD NEWS! They already played darts with amigasociety's X1000 package and put a dent in the side panel of his X1000 case. The damage to my X1000 case is much worse and cannot be fixed.

I have already ranted what happened on two or three other forum sites and at the A.org X1000 owners Social Group (invite to any X1000 owners that want to join us there, it is a closed and moderated Social Group just for X1000 owners), so I don't really want to repeat all the details here again. If you want to read about it, visit the Hyperion forums and you can read what I wrote there.

My X1000 runs and does not appear to be damaged functionally, but the case is damaged inside and outside, in a way that could not be a simple oversight. Who ever did the damage, covered it up after the fact as there is no way it could have been done without someone knowing that they had just done serious damage to my case. It had to be either a FedEX employee, or the Custom's Agent that inspected my package for Custom's Clearance.

I am pursuing all methods to have my case replaced by FedEX, with the help of AmigaKit, through the insurance claim process. Just a shame that the malicious damage that was done tainted my experience of receiving my X1000.

I'll try to make some videos of me using my X1000 in the future and will most likely be here asking tons of questions. This is my first OS4.x computer and my first ever, brand new (not NOS) Amiga(One) computer system. It is much more exciting than the NOS A1200 I bought from AmigaKit and my NOS CDTV that I bought from Carl Sassenrath, during the AmiWest 2010 Show 16 months ago.

Hopefully, I can keep using it while FedEX and AmigaKit determine how to send me a replacement case, and I don't have to send the whole thing back and wait weeks, or months to have it replaced.

Edit: @tajmaster,

I agree that A.org has gone downhill ever since Wayne left and I have thought about leaving there as well, many times, but it was my first Amiga "Home" on the Internet, so it is hard to give up on them. I don't spend much time there anymore and have cut down posting there by probably 90% or more. I disagree that there are more MorphOS users there than any other group of users. The predominant group of users there is still the original Amiga 68k group, and it will probably always stay that way. The problem there is that the moderation is lax and there are a half dozen trolls that happen to also be MorphOS users that make the rest of us (that means ME) MorphOS users look bad.

I have tried many times to convince these "Bad Apples" in the MorphOS community, that their trolling is bad for all MorphOS users and hurts us getting more users to try MorphOS, but they will not listen and are too immature to stop their behavior. Not all MorphOS users are that way and not all criticism by MorphOS users regarding OS4.x topics is malicious, but too much of trolling goes on and it makes all other comments by any MorphOS users to be seen as additional trolling. There are "Bad Apples" in all camps, and unfortunately, it is those "Bad Apples" that are usually the most vocal and post the most messages everywhere. Thankfully, most users and developers are not that immature and have given up on these childish fights. Hopefully the rest of the childish trolls will grow up some day and the fighting will stop. (probably not in my life time though).

I like all platforms that have been created due to the inspiration of the original Commodore Amiga systems. I am very happy to have my first OS4.x compatible system and look forward to programming on and for all flavors, as I improve my coding skills.

I thought they said not sooner than the middle of the year?

That would be June, or the end of June, or later in my book.

(of course, I have not read all postings in this thread, so there might be some other source besides the first post that indicated some news by March)

I wonder if most people cannot get AW.net to load has anything to do with their efforts to block certain domains in an effort to stop the hacker who has been messing with so many Amiga forum sites?

I have not been able to visit AW.net for about 24 hours now.

Very disturbing that Trevor's account on three different forum sites was hacked and used on the same day.

I wonder if this is a failure on the part of all three websites security, of if Trevor was just too casual or careless with his password protection?

If the latter, I hope he will take more care in the future, the news almost gave me a heart attack!
