Re: Doesn't Seem to be Any Programing Languages for AOS4 for the Average Person

Well, C is the only truly cross-plattform programming language and GCC is *the* cross-plattform compiler.

And while there really is no point in supporting OS3.x from within the OS4 SDK it is well documented what functions are new.

Cross Amiga-ish? Use VBCC.

@orgin

Seen and want one.
I plan to put 1 GB of memory in it from the start and add a Radeon9250 with 256MB to it.

Later maybe followed by some RadeonHD modell.

Case?
I just rip out the almost dead A1/SE from the tower I have now...

@Hans

I wait for your request to test it on the OS4 beta-list then, should be only a matter of days to get a suitable card.

And 2D alone really would be fine with me.

That's fine with me then.

Any recommendations then what card to get?
Or will any card help?

@Hans

Any idea when and under what conditions you will share your work with us?

I am only waiting for the Sam440ep-flex to be on sale and will need a gfx-card for it.
And before that I could use that card in my A1.

Well, try to find a drive with SATA1/SATA 1.5GB/s.

I just checked at my favourite supplier and only found SATA-II/SATA 3.0GB/s drives.

Like I wrote, my SE is close to dead.
So yes, this is for example aimed at me.

Therefore I just wrote ACube to handle my inquiry as pre-order for the flex and to contact me as soon as it's available.
And I'll probably add extra memory to the order since it could be a bit tricky to find a good module elsewhere.

@HammerD

Yeah, I would like to buy a Sam440ep-flex.
Now, please?

And I certainly wouldn't mind some extra speed either.
Although I am pretty confident that GCC compiles faster on the Sam440ep-flex/667 MHz than on my SE with G3/600.
Even more so as my SE is falling apart and I can no longer use DMA with my SII0680 card.

I sent a mail to ACube yesterday but I guess they need a few days to process all the mails they got now...

I have now read most of the CDC usb specs, and that class includes a lot of diffrent subclasses and protocols.. is there a specific Class/device you wanted support for.

RWO

Now you got me, so far I believed that CDC mostly is about emulating COM: just like what the FT232 do.

And with the lack of USB on my side I currently can only make general suggestions and not explore my demands.

What about porting libusb then?

Just looked over the thread, maybe missed it.

What about CDC?
The FT232 is nice but does not do CDC.

Oh, okay, at first I would be glad if I could use USB with my SE at all...

Normally I don't but I just did.

If we see some action on the hardware-front it would
be a shame if Amigan's wouldn't be around anymore
next year.

Of course and P96 is a great system, that's why i wanted to
know what happened to it, where is the site, where are the
original devs, has the source completely went over to Hyperion?

Is this really important?
I don't know the details between the original developers
and Hyperion but I also don't care much.

What I know is that the source was made available
to a handfull of developers by Hyperion so wherever
the original site went to it's save to assume
that P96 for OS4 is still in good hands.
(shameless self-promotion: "version rtg.library)

That sort of things

Hmm, sort of, that was the plan in november 2005
and probably still is.
When/if it can be brought to life is something different
and to my believe also depends on if Hyperion
can finally start to generate some well owned
revenue out of OS4.

But as Hans-J?rg also pointed out in the thread back then,
you don't really need to explicically use P96 for most
things as graphics.library already has a lot to offer.
And if P96 patches it now or something else later
or an enhanced P96 should make no difference.

What about P96? It's part of OS4.

And if/when it's replaced by something else is
apparently unclear right now as much as if we
really will see new OS4-hardware before
the end of march.

Of course, you could always port it to "just" the PPE (I think that's what the PPC compatible part of the CELL is called), but that would be a real waste, wouldn't it? Sort of like driving your 4.2 litre SUV half a kilometer down the road to the baker's and back Sunday afternoon? (Oh wait, people actually do that nowadays ...)

Well, the PS3 will be available in millions of units
and porting OS4 to it is possible.

It still would not be a cheap box and the display
for it costs a little more than a generic 17" TFT.
Due to the restriction of the hypervisor and that it's
not that easy to make good use of the SPE's
it would not be as fast as it could be,
at least not from the start.

But still, the hardware would be available to buy
from a major player in the business for several
years to come.

I see only two real problems right now.
The one is a company that is believed to still exist
somewhere for real and which may need to be
asked if they want to make some money
for each unit sold although they had nothing to
do with OS4 at all.

The other problem is how to ensure that only
licensed copies are installed but Sony may already
have the answer to that question.

@Atheist

There is a serious problem with the PS3.
It does not allow direct access to graphics and
some other components.

So you get no hardware acceleration for the gfx,
not for 3D, not for 2D.

I really would like to see how it performs regardless
of this serious limitation.

Disabling HW support in Amithlon makes a huge difference.

Re: AISS 3.2 available

@Mason

So what is on OS4-depot is 3.0 then?

Just installed that on sunday for the first beta-app
for me to test it with.

So I guess I need to re-install 3.2.

What I did not like about the 3.0 archive from
OS4-depot is that it uneccessarily features some
PNG files renamed to .info...
And that the installer just silently copies everything
without asking or feedback - but this has likely
changed now.

Any news on anything else to use AISS?
I was thinking on using it myself but I am
just not at the point to embed graphics.

And to be perfectly honest, I would love to see some
icons from you with a more, hmm, crispy palette.
The colors are a little too much washed out to meet
my personal taste.
I like a to have a little higher contrast.

Re: kilocore 1025

@cirabre

My take on that is that it has to become availble first
to be taken seriously.

Like the MPC8641(D) which Freescale delayed over
two years now and for which only samples
are available, production might start in mid 2007.
At least they planned to some months ago.

Then, Hyperion does software.
There still would the need for someone else to come
up with a hardware.

Todays designs costs thousands of Euros even if you
are not paid for your work.
The ArgoNavis eva/test board for the MPC8641
uses twelf layers, these things do not grow on trees.
And all the interesting chips come as BGA by now,
you need some pretty sophisticated equipment to solder
that stuff reliable, you just don't assemble such
a board on your diner table.

Re: Is AmigaOS secure enough to use online?
Just popping in
Just popping in

Well, at first I use no filesharing services with AmigaOS,
only password-protected FTP some times.
So no access to my files over the net.
In fact there are hardly any services at all.

Next we are so very few that even if there would be a way
to execute some code thru IBrowse for example,
we are just no target to make it worth the effort.

And last but not least, connecting to the Internet
today usually means by DSL or cable so there
is most likely a router involved which provides
basic firewall features thru NAT.
This means that only packets requested
are sent to the computer which requested them.
