Re: AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition Update 2 fatal failure

@MamePPCA1

As someone else said, this is really hard to diagnose and address remotely, and I think you will need to find someone in Europe who can help you in person.

One last thing you can try, Thomas Rapp's RDBRecov2. You can find it here.
https://thomas-rapp.hier-im-netz.de/download.html

I'm going to add alot of warnings here:

I have never used it
I don't know how to use it
It could irrevocably destroy your partitions

I've also noticed that my A1222 freezes if I copy files that are too large to the RAM disk, but only if I have completely maxed it out (i.e. no more space to copy to).

RAM disk will always show 100%, because it dynamically resizes to accomodate whatever is stored in it.

On my setup, I do have a SWAP partition.

You shouldn't really need a SWAP partition. AmigaOS can only address 2GB RAM, so you should only use a swap partition if you have less than 2 GB physical RAM. The modules available for most "modern" PPC Amigas (i.e., Sam, AEON machines) should be relatively cheap and plentiful to afford 2GB

BTW, just tested on my X5000, no problems copying a 1 GB file to RAM disk.

@Hypex

Well, my initial thought was that his recovery drive had SFS drivers but SFS not enabled in Kickstart. I have a recovery USB from AmigaKit and it is set out like this as well.

I was then perplexed when he said he had both SFS drivers and the module enabled in Kickstart, but SFS still not present after boot. I would suspect that a combination of uboot parameters (specifically os4_bootdevice) and the recovery drive boot priority might be causing problems.

He might need to copy the SFS driver from Enhancer onto the recovery drive.

OK, that's very odd. You have SmartFileSystem in you Kickstart folder, and you have the module loading in Kicklayout, but it is not loading.

(Otherwise, when you enter "version SmartFileSystem full" it would return the version of SFS loaded into memory, as smf pointed out).

Can you please open a shell and enter the command
nvgetvar

Let's try and diagnose what your uboot envars are doing.

Very nice, a real retro feel.

Glad you went for a black case. I put my X5000 in a white case. Looked great back in 2017, now horribly yellowed.

First check that your pendrive's Kickstart folder contains
SmartFileSystem
It probably does, but check first.

If it does, open Kickstart/kicklayout in Notepad.

Somewhere near the top should be a block of all the filesystems that are loaded during boot:

MODULE Kickstart/FastFileSystem
MODULE Kickstart/CDFileSystem
MODULE Kickstart/NGFileSystem

Add this line:

MODULE Kickstart/SmartFileSystem

underneath them. Save it and reboot from the pendrive.

Hopefully, when you now boot off the pendrive, it will load SFS and you will see your SFS boot partition. Then you can repeat the process to your DH0:Kickstart.

Depending upon your uboot variables, your Amiga might start to boot off the pendrive, and then switch to DH0:, which could cause problems. If that happens, we can look at your uboot variables.

@nbache

Sorry, just revisiting this old thread.

I was certain that there was an NVSetVar for non-SAMs. I may even have used it on my A1XE.

I even have documentation for it in the Documentation/C drawer of my X5000, and no documentation for NVGetVar (yes, I know, it's pretty easy to use, just pointing out we have documentation for non-existent NVSetVar, and no documentation for NVGetvar, which does exist).

Don't know how it would've got there, either from my A1XE or for the brief period I was loaned a SAM. It's also my my emergency USB boot drive, so I think somehow it was released.

I think Hans has said this is unlikely to change in the future, vendors don't really stick to a standard and implement their own ways of doing it.

RCA inputs on TV are becoming rare. We bought a new Sony OLED last year, and it doesn't have any RCA inputs. It has a weird little 3.5mm port, which carries both video and audio; I tried to connect our little Nintendo knockoff to it, but the lag made it unplayable.

Very nice collection, especially the 2 A4000s. I always wanted one!

I have actually used an A2500 before; when I was at film school in the late 90s, we had one for subtitling in our studio.

That's a very slick looking uboot. I played around with a SAM a few years ago and the uboot menus were similar to the old A1XE.

@skynet

I don't believe its possible to change the resolution of the splash screen - I think its part of the kernel not the OS.

I'm fairly sure that the on board sata won't write CDs or DVDs - I've never been able to. We might get a fix from Hyperion one day. It might be possible to connect a drive to a Sata card, like the 3112, but you'll lose the ability to boot from it.

I thought I read here that we shouldn't use DiskCache (maybe only if you use FFS?).

Don't know what you refer to but maybe it was when running on QEMU when using image files that should already be cached by the host then having additional cache in the guest is not needed. On real hardware or when passing through disks to guest so it handles it like on real machine I think disk cache is still useful but @joerg is the expert on that. He said SFS uses diskcache.library so it should be useful for it. I think it's best to not mess with it and leave it as it is on real machine unless it's proven to slow down access whith disk image files on QEMU but I think the difference might be small if any so may not worth the hassle and confusion of when to use it or not.

I was referring to real hardware, the original conversation predated QEMU (or at least general discussion of it on this site). I can't find it, but there's a reference here : https://www.amigans.net/modules/newbb/ ... id=141903#forumpost141903

Which I take to mean you shouldn't use diskcache on real hardware with SSDs

Yep, that came up here https://www.amigans.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=145872 and joerg gave a great breakdown of SFS/00 v SFS/02 https://www.amigans.net/modules/newbb/ ... id=145892#forumpost145892
