Good day all,
Having had so many troubles with my A1XE, and after my wife said, "Stop wasting your time trying to get that old thing to work!" I decided to look at my Amiga replacement options. After looking at the contenders, I sold off a lot of stuff to raise the necessary funds. I then visited the new ACube store and bought a SAM460ex motherboard. It will be shipping out soon.

@Thematic et al.
I also would like to know how Amiga filesystems fare on solid state, card, USB flash etc. I recently read that on Windows, solid state drives have problems with using virtual memory (constant read/write). Would this be a problem with the Amiga's new memory system and SWAP?

@Phantom
JXFS is reliable, but until someone updates the SLB, it can't be a boot partition. Incompatibility comes from JXFS not setting the executable flag. Joerg has said that this is an intended feature of JXFS.

@Ant
I wrote the new OS4.x installer for ImageFX 4.5, which you will find on OS4depot. I'd just like to add a few comments. Before my A1XE got fried, I was testing the compatability of all of the nice hooks, fxforge, and other effects with IFX. The list I compiled is on a fried hard drive, never to see the light of day again. You will have to check which hooks work under JIT, and which hooks will have to be run under the slower 68k emulation of OS4. Some of the features of IFX will not work under JIT.

@Spirantho I just looked it up on Aminet. It looks as if Jorg Strohmayer may have been involved with it at some time. Perhaps he could point us to the sources? PM? http://aminet.net/package/disk/misc/Diskspr3

I just started following the thread. Perhaps this has been asked at some point and I missed it, but does CW support Amiga diskspare device disks (980k disks)?

You are indeed right concerning the 9200SE; however, the 64 bit version of the 9250 is completely incompatible with A1s. Rogue et al at Hyperion have said as such. I have experience buying a 64 bit version of the 9250. It would not display a single thing.

@Dirk-B
If the 9250 was one of the incompatible (64bit) cards, you would have no graphics or text whatsoever showing on the screen. My guess is that the card is compatable, but has gone bad. Contact the seller as to its quality. You may be able to get a refund.

Could it be a PPC (reduced instruction set) versus 68k (complex instruction set) issue rather than an OS4 issue?

Why switch it off? After all, with SAM 4x0 systems, it will be the only noise letting you know the Amiga is on.

@QuikSanz
Back in January, I got my A1XE back from Revanche LLC. In transit, the heatsink had come off. I didn't think much about it until I had replaced about everything else in the system. I could not get UBoot from either the monitor, or the null modem/hyperterm serial output.
It is possible that the CPU got damaged in transit. Ask Kurt if there was shipping insurance. If so, maybe you can get it taken care of. For my part, I waited too long to check out this option.

@poweramiga
Get the PSU checked first. It was a PSU that fried my A1XE board back in December. Get it checked ASAP. If it is fine, then check the Voodoo card.
As a side comment, being that the Voodoo card is a bit old, you may want to replace it with a Radeon 9xxx anyways, especially to make use of compositing effects.

@poweramiga On amigaworld.net, I have a blank screen diagnosis/solution section... http://amigaworld.net/modules/feature ... _id=16&rev_id=174&sort_byThe "smells bad" comment does not sound good. My own A1XE got fried recently, smelling of burnt electronics. I sent the motherboard and CPU to Revanche LLC, who repaired the motherboard for a very decent price. The CPU was OK, but the heatsink came off during transit back to my home. The CPU now seems to be dead. I have been investigating the best solution for the lowest price. So far, getting the CPU module fixed with a 7457 @1GHz is still less expensive than getting a SAM440, SAM460, PegII or X1000. -The Phantom "?" Broken A1XE 800MHz

@Hans
My apologies for resurrecting a dead thread. Since frying my motherboard, sending it to Revanche, getting it fixed, and finding out that all the other components (including my Radeon 9000 AGP card) were fried, I was wondering about replacing my Radeon 9000 with an AGP version of the X1300. I read on your site that there are problems with using PCI HD cards with the DMA/USB fixed AmigaOnes. Are there also problems with the AGP version of the X1300 cards? Do such cards even work?
Oopsy! I just found the part of the thread indicating that the AGP version of the card requires a different voltage... Oh well.
