Re: Game Competition for September 2023- Open Tyrian !

Does anyone know if there's a trick to getting a joystick to work with this game? I've got a PS3 dual shock controller and the analogue stick isn't recognised. I can't use the d-pad because either it's broken (unlikely), or left isn't recognised by the entire OS. So that leaves me with no controller options outside of keyboard.

I don’t think there’s any secret to this. No magic combination that’s going to improve your performance 10 fold. Specify ppc, build it and if you didn’t get a feature that you expected or needed (like slirp) look through the configure output to find what enablements are supported for your platform and enable what you need. At that point configure may fail and tell you it needs a dependency you don’t have. Install that, rinse and repeat until you got everything you need.

There will be a few optimisations that can be set based on release vs debug. You could do with knowing them.

Sorry for lack of formatting, on my phone right now.

PS: I did build quite happily for Linux so this is based on experience but that machine is in pieces now so I can’t refer back to it.

Aside from picking the platform, I think the only other option I’ve ever specified on Mac is to enable slirp. I can check my config command later today.

Is it just me or does this game, or rather it's first level at least, seem very bugged? I can play it and never run out of lives every time. By the time I have died I'm guaranteed to have gained at least 1 extra life, 2 if the coins tally over over 99. On top of that, I get to a certain point where i have no choice but to just die by jumping into the void.

I'm willing to bet there's probably one or more invisible blocks to jump on when it comes to the end, but with the basically infinite lives situation, this will just be an endurance test of who is willing to sit through it the longest

I got bored at around 300,000 but I have a very low threshold for these things !

Qemu is line based and under MacOs/Windows there are no usable gui's that could simplify it.

As a Mac user I'm sure you probably already know this but we have the very nice emulation tool "UTM" that can either virtualise (Apple Hypervisor), or emulate (QEMU under the hood).

Sadly, I did try to use it for our needs but even when you go advanced and modify the "command line" options directly it still tries to be too clever and take ownership of too many things, inserting so many additional command line options that we don't want that it manages to break things.

It's a shame, it would be a great front end otherwise.

That's what Hans just described.

a safe option that has a minimal kickstart and no user-startup would have saved me a bunch of times recently while getting stuff setup and installed

Having seen the video I think I'd like all three now but probably e-reader. I'm not much of a reader and so many books i've bought just end up on the shelf not read.

Just got 1734.76 but I won't bother with a screenshot, firstly because it's 1st September now and it doesn't place me any higher anyway.

Good game, I liked that! Got proper tough by dungeon level 6

Re: X5000 Case Fans

Anyone got any idea what a normal CPU temperature might be to aim for? I'm assuming since it's what my stock cooler says, that idling at 63C rising to 68C on an extended gaming is perfectly fine.

The datasheet for the P5040 chip says 0C - 105C, but I'm guessing it's better not to get too hot for too long.

@geennaam

With the 580 mounted vertically, how do you use the other PCI slots? Do you just need to buy a riser cable that is long enough that it goes over the top of them?

So, the thing that originally made this case a no-go when I first saw it was the lack of reset switch. This is becoming uncommon in cases these days but is essential for the X5000, especially when developing / testing software. Not exactly difficult to make one that sits somewhere on the desk however but it would be better to have one built in.

I tried replacing the gelid solutions fan with a Noctua one last night. I was initially stuck as the Noctua fan does not suit the thin and long screws that the gelid fan uses. I eventually made something up only to discover that the Noctua fan made more noise than the gelid one. It was mechanical noise caused where the fan came into contact with the heatsink.

I'm interested to know how anyone else is mounting alternative fans but for the moment that fan is being returned as faulty, it should not have made more noise than the stock Gelid fan.

Well, tried again and was doing ok, about 700g or so and then not only did I buy some items that left me with <300g but I also met some bloke that wiped me out so that was the end of that. I may get time to have another go but I doubt it.

Re: SDL1 open issues

It's a bit less about time or inclination and more about the fact the X5000 parts were built into the case that the Qemu emulated machine was living in so they are currently just individual parts on my workbench pending me buying a new case and PSU to house them which needs to wait for the cash and for building work at home to be finised, so probably October?

After that I really don't mind testing things again.

Thank you - it took a little while to get here, I think down to holidays, and the wait was painful, but so far so good!

I have so many questions I don't know where to start. Actually I don't have that many, but I'm afraid to bombard everyone

Re: X5000 Case Fans

Thank you - that allowed me to see that the case fans aren't really doing a whole lot. I've disconnected the front fan completely and stuck a low noise adapter from Noctua on the back exhaust fan (I'm guessing it's a resistor!) and things are quieter and it doesn't look like it's changed the temps one bit.

Everywhere online says the CPU fan is really quiet. I guess that's true but at >3000 rpm it's kind of whiny and irritating. Maybe I'll look into it one day.

X5000 Case Fans
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

I just got my X5000 board yesterday (yay!) and after some false starts getting the OS on, I seem to be getting there. But my case fans stay at 100% all the time. Is this to be expected? And is there some monitoring tool that I can use to check case temps.

I've read a thread about GPU fans, but frankly I couldn't tell you want my GPU is doing because I can't hear anything else above the noise of the two case fans.

I mean, if this is normal then it's not a big deal. I was going to stick a 2.5" hot swap bay for the drive in there but I'll stick a fan controller in instead. It's just yet another thing I need to buy unfortunately.
