AmigaOS future if Amiga Inc. "wins"
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

I have created this thread after reading ssolie's post where he said that he thinks that Amiga Inc. will "win" during the lawsuit. (I didnt want to ask this off-topic question in the Leaving-thread)

So the question I'd like to discuss and ask you is NOT who will "win" during the lawsuit since this has already been discussed to death.

My question is, if we presume that Amiga Inc. "wins" the lawsuit and Hyperion looses, what do you think will that mean to the future and development of AmigaOS?
What result is most likely? Will they immediately release the hardware they have promised for Summer 2007?
Do they have interest in the further development of the OS?

I know there are many jokes about Amiga Inc, but please try to answer as seriously as you can. What is your most realistic personal prediction?

Does the term "two-faced" have any meaning to you?

Jahc expressed his positive personal experience with some peoples from Morphos and AROS. I don't know what your remark about two-faced, Mr Evans and abortion have to do with this.
Are you saying that all those people can be nice sometimes but are hiding their evil motives? If you really think so, then maybe you should take a walk in the parks.
I don't even know if Mr Evans is an AROS or Morphos-user but how can you generalize and classify the peoples like you do?
My opinion is this: There are good and bad peoples on all sides! Many are just normal users and developers who are enjoying their platform! It doesn't matter if they are using OS4, AROS or Morphos.
Then there are some extremists who are stiring trouble! Those extremists also exist on both sides! You cannot make a judgement on the whole usergroup because of them, because that is prejudice.
I think if you would have a more positive attitude, then you could make a lot of friends also in the other groups and share your experience with some programmes that both platforms have in common, or even memories of the past before the separation!
I think Jahc has a very good and realistic attitude about the platforms. I have seen that he has ported Wookiechat to AROS and Morphos with the help of others. That's just great and I think it helps to find some unity. Porting is not so difficult and the OS are not so different as many try to make them. If every application has the double amount of users, it can be only positive and the other peoples and users might give good suggestions in the development process.

Now, they are as bad as these 2. Who is they? You've read the list of names I made elsewhere in the past.

List of names? You are starting to scare me. It sounds like a death-list of an extremist religious group!
Hey, it's just a computer hobby, isn't it?

I left partly already. Most of my spare time is not spent on the Amiga anymore. I need signs of definite improvement before I want to spend any more time on porting stuff or spend anymore time on beta testing for that matter.

My feelings are the same. After I sold my AmigaOne, I was very sad and wanted to buy a new Amiga once I had the money. So I was looking at the news and announcements and often I was drooling over the specifications that were listed. Now, after more than two years of waiting and many empty promises later, I HAD some money again and was ready to spend it. But still nothing...

But what I have also noticed is that my interested in so called "next generation" hardware has vanished more and more. I am no longer excited about it and don't feel like spending a lot of money anymore for a slow system like Samantha that will maybe get released with OS4 in 2008, maybe not. It's too little too late!
I must say I also like the idea of the Mac Mini port. Maybe I would even buy one if it would be released NOW. But I am not sure how I will think about it next year. Maybe I will have already forgotten about the idea.
The only thing which keeps my interest in Amiga are the old Classic machines and all those good memories from the past. The good times when Amiga stood for something better, something more advanced, not for a slow expensive system that easily breaks and has many bugs.

All my hopes are on Minimig. Something truly exciting! Dennis created something extremely stunning while the others focused on announcements and meaningless predictions.

We need more Amigans of the Dennis kind!

@Mikey_C & orgin

I don't think that ChrisH complained about the moderation policy. He was only unsure how particular things are handled in the Too hot to handle forums.
I think Outcast explained this short, but very well when he said "say what you want, but no personal attacks".
So only personal attacks are not hot enough, so they can be handled and dealt with.

I think Chris doesnt intend to accuse ACK really, he is only pointing out the facts, which are bad enough. There is no need to invent things and create false accusations.
It is only strange that some peoples still have to find strange excuses for ACKs unreliability.

Sorry, we can't blame him for this, I think he has well-earned the holidays, because he has been working very hard on Samantha and Moana during the last years!
I hope he'll be back with some new energy to fix your CPU module.

So is it possible to change nicknames here? I still haven't made my mind up. Any suggestions?

I would suggest giving ACK a few more days before making accusations because things do get delayed in the postal system. When your system arrives in the UK it may be handled by the Royal mail, in which case you need to note the strike action which is causing delays in deliveries.

I agree. It is not completely clear yet that ACK is untrustworthy. Maybe it's only the postal system that has caused a delay of 2 years for the return of the mainboard.
Let's wait some more days, it is possible that ACK will be completely trustworthy again next week when he has returned all boards and shipped all the hardwares that he has promised.

I don't know why Genesi still care about the Amiga name. Maybe they do it only because they like to nag and tease Amiga Inc about it. Maybe they do it because of their history when they tried but failed to buy Amiga.

Today the reputation of the Amiga name is getting more and more damaged and I doubt it is worth anything. Otherwise some company would have bought them to use the name, just look at Commodore.
Sometimes I wish that the name will be buried for good and that everything we remember about it is only in the past and happened before 1994. Today, the name sometimes seems like a rotten corpse to me that someone dug out only to torture it.
Maybe they or Hyperion should find a new name and everyone should stop caring about trademarks. The name is cursed.

Regarding the information that I sent to the reporter, I didn't do that through hate-colored glasses, thank you. And what does Kouris contacts with Soros in the past have to do with anything? It doesn't make McEwen a better business-man. I still think his talents are elsewhere.

My actions of sending some factual information about Amiga Incs past were neither driven by ignorance nor hate. They were driven by the will to help the reporter during his investigations and supply him with facts that would have required a lot of digging. I have done this in the past too when a big newspaper here wrote a report about retro gaming and the Amiga. With my information, they even wrote a follow up and included pictures of a user meeting!

We also don't know why Amiga let it go.

If there were some honourable reasons behind it, or if there would be an explanation which would help restoring their reputation (did they ever have a good one?), then we would already know about it.
Instead, McEwen did not react to phone calls from the city of Kent and didn't comment to calls from journalists. Maybe he is embarrassed about the situation because Pentti Kouri who is the real boss refused the payments.
McEwen should consider to change the job, it does not seem he is very talented at managing a company. Maybe he should start to lecture at universities. Gary Hare did the same. Maybe McEwen could apply for a lecturer position in marketing?

Who was it that was behind first, ?partnering? with Amiga even up to the point of taking their money?then doing no work; then later, under different corporate identity, causing Amiga lots and lots of trouble that was not only unnecessary, but also unfounded, both publicly and financially, therefore being the prime mover in causing Amiga's troubles, and are they also linked to the revelations of late?

I think you are off-topic with this. If someone tells a newspaper the full truth about Amiga Inc and their history of troubles, then I don't care about the motives at all. But it is important that the peoples at the city of Kent get the FULL information about Amiga Inc instead of only believing the unrealistic talk of McEwen.
I also sent some links and a few comments to a journalist in response to an article about Amiga Inc. Some things in the article were not correct, so I helped him to gather more information about the history of Amiga Inc. I think others did as well. I don't think it is necessary to start conspiracy theories about other companies trying to badmouth Amiga Inc. There is no need to badmouth them or twist anything, when everything is there and openly disclosed in the public already.

Re: Leaving?

@Mikey_C

I think many peoples who already own AmigaOnes will keep them until they break. Then they will consider if it's worth spending a few hundred Pounds on a new CPU module. Some will others won't. So the number of users is going to decrease, but it's a slow process.
What I see a bit more critical is the mood and general feeling of the developers. When the situation looks hopeless, then some will stop developing for it. This will make the OS less attractive because apps are missing. It's like a vicious circle.
It's difficult to say how many are waiting to get OS4 hardware. If it would be available now, then I am sure that it would immediately more than double the userbase, boosting development.
I think we will loose most of those peoples when MOS is released for Efika, because many will buy it for the cheap price (although it's not the same and very limited).

Although I don't think there will be new hardware by Christmas, I also think you should keep both. Sometimes we need to take a break and come back with fresh energy. I would only sell it when in desparate need of money, because it has become a rare item and will not decrease in value.

How can you say "illegally" when the judge still has to decide on all this? The judge will decide what was legal and what is illegal, not you, so maybe you shouldn't state it as a fact.
If you talk about legal or illegal, you need to drop the moral feelings of right or wrong, it doesn't work this way. It's economy, not charity business.

It's difficult to say, but it's clear that it will be worth much less after a long court trial. If they include the lawyer payments in their profit calcualtions for OS4, I hardly believe there will be anything left.

@Atheist

Now also ITEC LLC is sueing Hyperion because they agreed to the $25k contract and payments!
To me Hyperion looks doomed now, how will they be able to pay all the money for the lawyers and defend themselves with two attackers?

I still hope for Hyperion to win, because for me, this seems to be the best possible result for OS4.

Let's be realistic, if Amiga Inc wins, there wont be a quick release of new hardware with OS4. First there is ACK who has yet to proove that he can produce something and second, there is the question about OS4 sources. Even if they are ordered by court to provide the sources, there are still the Friedens who own the kernel and there are other developers as well.
With the new lawsuit by ITEC, it will take even longer until everything is sorted out and then, and if Amiga Inc wins, they still need to sort out the situation about OS4 sources. It is not realistic that they will get everything complete and well commented. And which OS4-experienced programmers are working for Amiga Inc? I still have to see them.
